FYI Dennis ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Sunday, July 09, 2006 7:53 AM I=99ll throw this out FWIW, Cliff Coy has done my all five of my annuals. He removed and inspected my uplocks at the five year point. They were OK. I believe he uses some kind of glycerin/alcohol mixture to lube the air system. It appears to work well, as 500 hours later I haven=99t had any rust problems in the air system. And the more the more you fly itthe better for the air system/engine/etc. Only exception to this approach is the fuel bill!!!!! -Steve -----Original Message----- [mailto:Yak-52-TW-Owners-Group@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of David McGirt Sent: Saturday, July 08, 2006 5:00 PM Importance: High Just wanted to share this with the group =93 I bought my TW used ~ 125hrs on it, and the entire air system has been a mess since then.. I have replaced the flap valve up front, rear gear valve, and the starter valve since I bought the TW.. all because the previous owner did not take care of the air system.. lesson learned about buying a used Yak for me.. anyway, just thought I would share with all.. Make sure you get your GIB to work those rear flap and gear handles every once in a while, so they do not get crap in them like this.. David ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Sent: Friday, July 07, 2006 7:37 PM Importance: High Dear David, I got around to disassembling the stockpile of landing gear and flap valves to be sent off for polishing. Upon disassembling your 3-port valve, crumbles of rust started to fall out of it. Well, the pictures tell the story. You have the dubious distinction of sending me the worst valve I have seen to date. The spring is trash. I think there is a good chance the valve body halves will polish up. My chief concern is the condition of the rest of your air system. The last really bad valve I received was from an Anabras "Overhauled" aircraft. The owner went back to him and he said he overhauls everything but these valves. I was a bit skeptical. Robert, Thanks for your concurrence on pulling uplocks. They are, as you say, at the end of the pneumatic system. Thus whatever you find inside an uplock assembly is most likely what you will find throughout your aircraft's pneumatic system. I am going to share this with the Yak list since it applies to all Yak's. Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: RLang27641@aol.com To: Yak-52-TW-Owners-Group@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, July 09, 2006 8:59 AM Subject: [Yak52TW] Re: FW: Dubious Award - Rust Bucket I will throw this out, on my standard YAK, flown an average of 160 Hrs. per year, I had a near miss on an uplock. The Rt. main did not unlock until the nose and Lt. main were locked down, needing the full pressure to unlock. Had I not had full pressure, I doubt that it would have unlocked without the Emer. system. A good reason to keep pressure in the Emer. system high. This is your last shot at over coming a rusty uplock. While I did not have use my Emer. It was my next and only option. I elected to return home with the gear extended as the trip was short and put the A/C on jacks for an actual retract. You guessed it, same as in the air, the Rt. main hesitated to unlock. Pulled the up lock and it was full of rust. Remember this A/C had been flown at least weekly. I had rebuilt the uplocks as well as the actuators sometime prior, but had not checked them during condition inspections. I am surprised that this issue has not gotten more attention, or more props. But then that is the purpose of this web site. Having said all that to say this, yes flying often is better than the A/C setting idle for extended periods. Just remember, due to the airline dead ending at the Uplock actuator, any moisture that goes in stays in. Eventually causing rust. Pull them and check them often YAK and CJ drivers. Robert, You would be better of cost wise doing a TD conversion and gutting the cockpits of all the heavy avionics. If you just have to have a family model. However, as long as you have the Clark Y airfoil, you are looking at a slower airplane. You can only do so much and you still have to deal with the wing. It is still a great airplane no matter how you look at it. Still faster than the average spam can! If you want a faster, more agile, and just plan cool YAK, get a 50. Without all that extra wt., it does cruise faster at the same power settings as the "Duece". Keep your Duece for those times you just need the family model to introduce someone to the Great World of YAKOVATING! Do not want to hear from you Chinese Yakkers about the agile and faster virtues of your CJ's. They are all great airplanes and fun to fly! For some of us Mil types, they make a pretty good and cheap replacement for the really fun iron that we used to fly. Saying that, I know there are a few of us that are still lucky enough to be flying Mil iron and fly our YAK/CJ's too! Doc ----- Original Message ----- Sent: 7/6/2006 9:25:42 AM If the cost was at all reasonable, or if a eastern european provider could be found, installing the new Yak M wing on our older 52's would have great interest to me., Better cruise speed, more fuel etc Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 8:37 AM In a message dated 7/6/2006 9:09:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time, schwartzcompany@att.net writes: I have always been interested in the Russian extraction seats. For light aircraft they seem more practical than a full aircraft let down system. However fitting them into a CJ without major canopy modes (and I love the sliding canopy) makes them hard as a retrofit. ( At least I can't figure how to do it). But for the formation flying and formation acrobatics guys this would be a great safety asset. Installation + cost would drive the price of these things. A lot of guys might try some really exciting flying IF the was a way to get out of a screw up. After rereading the Yakolev website discription of the 52M, I stand corrected on the wings. They were modified to improve stall characteristics. The feet are still external to the wing and hence are a source of drag as it appears from the three provided photos. They still use a modified Clark Y Airfoil. The stated max speed is 360 kmph, so what would we be getting for extra cruise out of those wings? You get 190 lts in fuel so that is alittle better than where we are now with stock 52's. Still have to say for the cost if I were going to put a new set of wings on my duece, I would do the TD conversion or pray the Russians decide to produce the 152 if you just have an aversion to tail dragging. I am sure the 152 will come at a significantly higher cost if it is ever put into mass production. Doc Roger "Doc" Kemp viperdoc@mindspring.com Aint no sound like a Radial
