--> Yak-List message posted by: "Mark Jefferies YAK UK" <mj@yakuk.com> In the UK we have a system of alerting owners at annual inspection for problems. It works just like AD's on certified a/c. i.e. you check them and then sign off, simple. In 1998 the following was issued. Why is there not something similar in USA? All life items and other "quirky" maintenance issues would be caught saving some one grief down the line. http://www.yakuk.com/img/piston.jpg record them in a book like this http://www.yakuk.com/cap543.asp the same book as used for certified a/c. MPD: 1998-016 R2 applicability: Yakovlev/ Aerostar SA. Reason: The up-lock piston assembly in both nose wheel and main undercarriage pneumatic circuits is prone to the accumulation of dirt and moisture which can cause corrosion. In addition, deterioration in the rubber seals due to lack of lubrication has been noted. There have been examples where this corrosion has prevented the up-lock catch releasing, resulting in a wheels up landing. Revision 2 was introduced to exclude the Yak 50 which was included in error. Compliance: Not later than the next 50 Hour inspection from the effective date of this MPD, remove the up-lock piston assembly (Yak 52 Parts number, 524705-30) in both nose wheel and main undercarriage pneumatic circuits. Dismantle and internally inspect for corrosion in the piston and cylinder. Replace if corrosion is found. Inspect the seals and replace if necessary. Repeat this inspection every 200 flying hours or every 3rd to permit flying renewal whichever is sooner. Rubber parts are to be lubricated with an appropriate rubber grease. Record compliance with this MPD in the aircraft logbook. Med, Two things are in the works. Red Air Oct 12-15 at Selma, Al or it will be at Wetumpka, Al. (08A) over the same dates. I have an engagement party and wedding for my son to get out of the way in July and Aug, then I can get more serious about a the clinics. We can also do a mini clinic if the Red Air clinic falls through this year. I am going to to try to make either or both happen. Congrats on your new bird. Pappy, I am going to start working Selma as soon as I get my son's engagement party (this weekend) and his wedding (Aug 19) out of the way. The proposed time is still 12-15 Oct. The place will either be SEM or Wetumpka, Al (08A). My hanger is at 08A but quick turns for gas could be a problem since they do not have a truck. I can work that issue though. Just got a lot on the plate right now but will get started on it shortly. Ok folks the hotel info is up on the site for the Fall Fly-in in Sanford, ME 9/14-17 We've gotten a great deal at the Majestic Regency in Ogunquit, ME., approx 15 mile from the airport. Our rate is $50 per night including breakfast. When making reservations tell them you want the Red Star rate Plus I've been getting rumors out of the FAA that they are going to permit a bomb run on a lake in downtown Sanford. We'll be bombing a small boat moored out on the lake. As soon as I know this is a done deal I will do the run with video camera and post so you can all see what a blast this is going to be. By the way this wasn't my idea. It was the airport manager's who has been talking and dealing with FAA. Talk about a great guy! Please register and make hotel reservations as soon as you can, so I know how many to expect and the hotel doesn't give rooms away. To register go to web site Fall Fly-in POTUS

Subject: Slow leak in Main Air Tank -52
OK guys here's the problem we just started experiencing. The main air tank has a slow leak that will take 2 - 3 days to drain completely. We are pretty sure it is leaking out of the valve that is between the fill port on the side and the main tank. When I put my thumb over the port opening I can feel it begin to build pressure and leak out. The real tell tale is that when I take the cover off of the port on the side it is pressurized and "pop's off". The emergency air tank has no leaks at all and holds pressure just fine. We have flown it with the leak and the tank fills right up and it fly's fine. It seems we had this problem before but it worked itself out on it's own. Anybody seen this on theirs? Anyone know of an alternate for factory screws? Seals for various parts of the engine. Mine are developing some leaks and I want them replaced. A source for overhauled hoses. (Doug???) Remove and replace the check valve on the firewall at the cross (+) where the pop off valve is located. If you are looking at the cross, the pop off valve is on the top, the air filter is on the bottom. The check valve on the right side goes to the snot bottle. The check valve on the left goes to the external air fill port. Replacing the check valve on the left, or you may be able to clean the crud out of it to make it seal properly, will definitely fix this problem.
