I run my M14 on Aeroshell W100. The Multi viscosity for me is not a problem
since I mix it with W80 for the winter months and W120 for the few warm
months. Since these Aeroshell oil are compatible, I can adjust my viscosity
with the seasonal changes.
I was told be George Coy a few years back when my mechanics put Aeroshell
15W50 in my CJ to flush it ASAP. The additive used for this oil (my
understanding is it is the same additive that makes the + in the W100+) is
not good for the compressor shaft of the M14 engine. Unfortunately, by the
time I received this information, I already had 10hrs on the 15W50. Every
time I purged the air snort valve, a foamy beige stuff would spit out
instead of the usual mixture of moisture/air, which prompt me to ask
questions. After I changed back to W100, all returned to normal within about
2 hrs of flying. About 50hrs of flying later, I had a compressor failure.
Coincidence? Probably.
I couldn't tell you if the CJ compressor is affected in the same manner then
the M14, but I sure am glad to see my snort stuff back to normal.

Whenever I use the multi grade oils, my engine (now 1,200 hours since
new ) M-14p gets oil leaks. I've been using Mobil 100 or 120 since day
one. I do know guys who really feel the multi grades are the best. I
truly do not know.
Pappy
Gentlemen,
here comes again that so often
exhausted question about the right
oil for the Housai engine.
I put in one year 200 hours on my
CJ and used like the previous owner
the Phillips 66 25-60 oil.
Now my new AME (who was raised
and trained in East Europe) told me to
not use the Phillips oil on those engines.
According to him, the Phillips oil is designed
for American Radial Engines and will do more
harm than good to the East-Bloc engines.
His recommendation is the Aeroshell W100 Plus,
the closest oil to the specs of Housai, M14 series,
M462RF, etc.
What do you think, your opinion is much appreciated.
cheers

The only thing I would add is -
Some arrivals Friday and Sat to MTW/OSH - with practice formation
flying in MTW Sat/Sun.
Saturday cookout MTW small scale with the local EAA chapter - no
comanches this year.
Monday at MTW - Jurgis is supposed to fly - does anyone have this
confirmed and a time?
Monday evening Maritime Inn - Manitowoc - MemoriaL Dinner for Rodger.
Monday afternoon Sergei will arrive. He will fly with those who
have indicated the desire on Tues Wed Thurs - Possibly Fri morning.

Well, let's start here. Can he explain to you why they would be good
for American Radials and not good for the copies of American radials
that the Russians make? LOL! Seriously, I have used 25/60 for over
800 hours combined on M14Ps and Housai's....I cannot sit here an
claim lower oil burn, but I do know all the engines that I've flown
consume about .6-.8 liters per hour in cruise flight. The biggest
reason I use it is because I believe what Dennis has previously
stated....better flow at lower temps reduces wear at start up....it's
purely anecdotal to me at this point, I've certainly seen no evidence
of it hurting anything. My question to him would be exactly what
harm is caused by using the Phillips? Comments like that make me
skeptical of one's true knowledge....and what else is that person
shooting from the hip with that they truly don't understand.
Smoke. Bill Blackwell installed the system on my personal bird a
year ago, and it puts out copious amounts of smoke. The important
thing is the pressure....make sure to use a pump that will deliver at
least 60 psi and adjust the flow valve and restrictors at the
injectors to get the optimum burn....nozzle placement doesn't seem to
make a lot of difference in Bill's experience.

Gang,
Yours truly has been invited back to do a forum on Yaks and CJ's
Friday the 28th at 10:30 a.m. in the Warbird building. I am putting
together a presentation now and welcome any input at to what topics
would be of interest for new and prospective Yak and CJ owners. I'm
headed to Hungary tonight to inspect several L-39's but will keep my
eyes open and ears to the ground for anything Yak as well.... I'll
be back on Wednesday, so any lack of response on my part will be due
to that and the impending jet lag.. >:}
Thanks in advance...please send suggestions to me directly at
barry@flyredstar.com
Cheers,
Barry

Barry,
thank you for yor contribution.
I have an ADC Oil-Filter installed and
the screen showed excessive debris
of brass/bronze after appr. 300 hours
of using the Phillips oil.
That indicates wear-out of bushings
(like in a con-rod) and it might be good
example for using the wrong oil.
My engine has an oil-preheater and
it gets pre-oiled before every flight. I
even might need a new engine and so
I likely believe now my AME (who worked
on those engines in the former East-Bloc)
and switch to some other oil.
cheers
Elmar

Hans, Hans, Hans....easy my friend. [Shocked] That's what the "LOL" was for at
the end of the sentence. The 985 and M14 line share similarities, but I actually
prefer the Russian brewed engines myself....easy to maintain and bullet proof
as engines can be. Adjust the valves on a 985 one time and you'll really
have an appreciation for the M14/Housai!
Also, debating which oil is the best is like debating which (keeping the Russian
theme here) Vodka is best...Aeroshell and Phillips have both proven to be reliable
and safe oils.
Cheers,
Barry

Troops,
I believe it has been mentioned here before BUT one of the best trip
planning pages I've ever seen is ( http://_www.rvproject.com/wx/_
(http://www.rvproject.com/wx/) ). It along with AirNav at ( _http://www.airnav.com_
(http://www.airnav.com) ) are really great. AirNav is great for planing out you
legs first while rvproject is great to check before each leg just before you
depart.
Let me what you think too.

Subject: | Yak52 fuel tank leaks |
A year ago, flying back from OSH, I developed a fuel leak in my right wing
tank. Repaired it easy enough (crack across one of the reinforcing beads along
the bottom). Now a year later, I have developed another leak (also the right
tank). Have not jumped into repairing it yet, but here is the question:
Could I have a vent problem that is allowing the tank to pressurize with summer
heat, or as I fly, and cause these cracks? In the summer, I leave my tank caps
lose so pressure does not build up (still waiting for a hanger, so outside
24/7), so I don't think pressure is a problem. My tanks appear to vent properly
and my Aux tank pumps into my wing tanks properly, so I don't recognize any
other problem other then frequency tank cracks/leaks.
Are leaks like this common? (1 a year on average) How do I test that my fuel
vent is clear and open? Is there another source of this problem I don't know
about? As always, thanks for whatever insight you can provide.

Subject: | Re: Yak52 fuel tank leaks |
Preston,
I don't think you have a pressure problem. Most likely your tank may have
built in structural stresses that when subjugated to vibration of operation,
cause the welded seams to crack. Also the tank will expand and contract with
heat of the ambient air. If the welded seams are under tension (maybe
happened during construction or repair ) than they can crack. Also the weld it
self could have small imperfection bought on by the welder or materials used.
Pressure problems in a fuel system would almost show up as fuel feed
problems to the engine before they would ever get to the point where it would
crack
tank metal.
Leaks are not common but not unknown in either the Yak nor CJs.
