Gentlemen,
I replaced last week on my CJ
the 2 needle tach with a brandnew
single needle tach. Now the single
needle tach shows more than the
actual RPMs, e.g. it shows 1000 RPM
instead of 700 RPM, or 3000 RPM
instead of the actual 2000 RPM.
Do I need an inline resistor kit, or
are those single needle tachs not
compatible with the 2 needle tachs?
Any ideas?
Thank you in advance.

Is this an experimental exhibition aircraft? If so you shouldn't need any manuals.

Actually, In experimental exhibition you need the manuals in order to sign the
maintenance off. All work must be done IAW the original or approved modified
maintenance manuals. I think you are referring to normal experimental catagory
where maintenance manuals are not required only IAW FAR 43.13 APP D.

You are permitted to work on the aircraft but to only things listed in the FARs
under preventative maintenance or under the supervision of a A&P. A pilot can
make a log book entry about preventative maintenance performed only. An A&P
still must sign off annuals (phase inspections) and Maintenance items.

1. Did you attend OSH?
2. Did you fly your plane, and, if so, what type is it?
3. Did you go to both MTW & OSH, or just OSH?
4. Did you fly in the mass OSH show formations?
5. Did anyone count the number of L-39s in attendance?
Please contact me off list.

Larry,
This issue has been cussed and discussed for years on this list. To
repeat, if you read FAR 43.1(b), it states " This part does not apply to
any aircraft for which the FAA has issued an experimental certificate,
unless the FAA has previously issued a different kind of airworthiness
certificate for that aircraft. " Therefore, FAR 43 in its entirety does
not apply to our aircraft. FAR 43 covers Maintenance, Preventive
Maintenance, Rebuilding and Alterations. The only time you need an A&P
(not an I.A.) is for the annual condition inspection sign-off. The
Annual Condition Inspection IAW your Operating Limitations must meet the
scope and detail of FAR 43 Appendix D.

Dennis,
I absolute agree with your reading of the FAR's concerning maintenance
on an experimental aircraft.
As far as the insurance issue , I'm sure the companies have all of this
built into the price structure.
Experimental aircraft are as reliable as the average spam can and may be
better.

And I forgot to add, no A&P signature is required for any repairs made
to the airplane. And A&P must sign the annual condition inspection
certifying the airplane is in a condition for safe operation.
