All,
I submitted for ops limits when I got my Yak in January. I still don't have
them and the Van Nuys FSDO just got back to me in that last week after
months of pestering with an unruly list of things they need. First they
want an application for an airworthiness certificate. The airplane already
has an airworthiness certificate. They want me to give them a map depicting
all of the local densely populated areas. They want copies of my Phase 1
paperwork. They want copies of my W&B paperwork. When I started this all
they asked for was a copy of the old ops limits and a request for new ones.
I don't think they are handling this situation correctly. Can anyone shed
some light/experiences.

What does this have to do with Yak's and CJ's? Please take this off-list.

With most OL's, they have a home base airport named in them. Since the
OL's and Airworthiness Certificate are married together, whenever the
airplane is sold and/or physically moved to another airport it requires
the issuance of a new Airworthiness Certificate and new OL's. Before
the FSDO can issue an Airworthiness Certificate and OL's you must first
have the new registration in your hands. Then you must complete the
Application for Airworthiness Certificate form and present it, copies of
your log books showing the last condition inspection sign off, the old
OL's, sometimes a copy of the W&B (just depends on the inspector) and
whatever else the inspector requests. Typically the inspector uses the
previous set of OL's and verifies that all is up to date in accordance
with FAA Order 8130.2F. As for Phase 1, all that is required is that
the log book reflect the completion of phase 1 and is signed off by the
person/owner who completed Phase 1. You may want to ask what
"paperwork" he is expecting to see since it only requires a statement
signed off in the log books.

Dave and Scooter,
The objective was / is to have the Magazine available online. Unfortunately
as this is a volunteer organization, sometimes things take a little longer
then expected. But it is in the plans.
Thanks for the good comments, it is always pleasant to know when your work
is appreciated. My team and I are already working on the fall issue, so look
for it in your mailbox some time in the near future.
In the mean time, if any of you have pictures of OSH / MTW, we could
certainly use some nice shots of our merry bunch.
cheers,
Dan Fortin

Yeah... Happens when you put a tad too much oil into the system.
Learned this the hard way.

Guys,
Anything you put in the air system should be looked at very carefully.
If it contains chemicals that will cause the rubber seals in the system
to swell it will cause you a ton of grief. So proceed with caution. My
advice is that if you are hell bent to use something other than what the
book calls for you should at least test whatever you use by applying it
to a seal and watching it for 72 hours or so. I have no experience with
ACF50 except to spray it on the skin laps of my float plane, it may be
just fine for use in the air system, I really have no idea. I do know
that in the past month I have sent new seal to a bunch of guys who
commented that all their seals were loose and sloppy....all swollen up.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

yes, I put ACF-50 in all the CJ's I maintain, both as an airframe spray
to prevent/ stop corrosion and also in the air system. ACF-50 is a water
displacer and will help prevent the water trapped in your system from
corroding up components such as air tanks, check valves, water
separator, snot bottle, etc. just add it like you would air tool oil
when you service your air system.

Craig,
The only way I have been able to do the job is to buy a pair of side cutters
that has enough meat in the jaws to grind one side perfectly flat so that
you end up with a very fine flat (and very sharp) edge. Place the cutters
flat edge down and allow the sharp edges to go under the soft alu collar.
Next work around the Duz, pinching off the alu collar as you go around.
I do have the proper Chinese Duz fasteners if you need them. When restoring
the Miniyak I noticed the all the slots on the stock aircraft were in line
with the slip stream. When I attempted to replace the rusted Duz fasteners
with US fasteners I found that now all the slots were 90 degrees to the slip
stream. A very small point that I am sure no one would notice, but I wanted
it to be "as per".
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Subject: | Commercial Ticket in the Yak |
Herb,
You can get your Commerical License in the Yak. Rodger Modglin received his
in his Yak 52. The examiner who gave him his checkride is a friend of mine
and I can get you his name and number if you would like to ask him any
specific questions. (I don't think he had been in any other Yaks besides
that one) When the examiner sent the paperwork into the FAA, they responded
back saying they could not issue a commercial ticket to Rodger because they
had no proof that the Yak was a complex aircraft...so you just might want to
include a picture of your airplane with the paperwork if you decide to do
it. ;)
