The only 5 mm wire in reasonable lengths that I have found are here.

never had any trouble with them. Have fun!

The 1/4 turn fasteners that hold the fuel tank covers on the wings are
called Dzus fasteners. Hope this helps.

h...the word means????
Thanks!

Gary Gabbard here, I just took about a hundred dzuses out of
the sheet metal on a Stearman, and the tool and the process that Doug
discribed is the exact process I had to use to get them out...

Craig,
The only way I have been able to do the job is to buy a pair of
side cutters that has enough meat in the jaws to grind one side
perfectly flat so that you end up with a very fine flat (and very sharp)
edge. Place the cutters flat edge down and allow the sharp edges to go
under the soft alu collar. Next work around the Duz, pinching off the
alu collar as you go around.
I do have the proper Chinese Duz fasteners if you need them. When
restoring the Miniyak I noticed the all the slots on the stock aircraft
were in line with the slip stream. When I attempted to replace the
rusted Duz fasteners with US fasteners I found that now all the slots
were 90 degrees to the slip stream. A very small point that I am sure
no one would notice, but I wanted it to be "as per".
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

I hate to interrupt all the fun on the 'list lately but does
anyone have a slick way of removing Dzus grommets that crimp the studs?
Looks like a hacksaw job otherwise.

Subject: | Red Air Fall Fling II Update |
All,
Red Air Fall Fling II is listed event on the RPA website. For those planning on
attending but have not signed up please do so as soon as you plans are finalized.
There are 18 aviators that have commited to attend to date (not all signed
up through the RPA). We will hold a FAST clinic for those desiring the training.
The Tactical Portion is firmly embedded in Jello at this time. Seems more
want to fly an hour in fingertip than in tactical.
We will be negotiating with the FBO in the next couple of weeks for fuel discounts.
Considering that the 30 so aircraft that attended last year burned over
3000 gal of 100 LL.! We expect the same courtesy as was extended last year. As
the date nears, we need an exact head count to arrange the logistical support.
So please let us know if you plan to attend.
As a heads up, Red Air is planning on holding a Spring Fling @ Fairhope 's newly
upgraded airport on the Alabama Gulf coast. The date will be coinside with
the Fairhope airshow on 19 - 20 May 07. They are hoping for 30 Red Star Aircraft
to attend. The accomadations for this past May were outstanding as was the
communities' support of those pilots that attended. So saying all, this we (Red
Air) plan to help kick off the event by arriving early and playing long!

If anyone needs a excellent Nanchang or YAK DAR in the west it would be Ted DeSantis
down in Mesa, AZ. He has done several of my CJs as well as others and really
knows his business, especially the paperwork. Give him a call at: 480-924-1602
or 602-565-8706. Tell him Gary Bunn of Prescott sent you. He's a good
guy to have on your side, easy to work with and fair.

Gang,
There has been much discussion lately about dealing with an unknowing / unresponsive
FSDO where Airworthiness Certification and Operating Limitations are involved.
With the collective wisdom of this list, I am surprised that no one has
suggested that THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE. Seek out the services of a Designated
Airworthiness Representative (DAR)! Yes, this will cost some money, but what
is your time and aggravation worth?
We are fortunate that there is a very "Red Star" friendly DAR here in New England.
Among the many functions Jeff Mandeville is authorized by the FAA to perform
are to issue original & recurrent Special Airworthiness Certificates in the
Experimental-Exhibition Category. Some of Jeff's more recent activities have
involved Yak-52, Yak 18T, L-29, L-39C, Fouga CM-170 and Pitts-S12. He is also
quite familiar with my CJ-6A.
When I asked about his availability to travel, this is the e-mail response I received.
"I am willing to do the certification inspections just about anywhere,
however, I have to request permission from my FAA office to work outside of
New England, and they are required to coordinate with the local FAA office where
I am performing the inspection." He also included, "Feel free to have anyone
give me a call for information, or if they have any questions having to do
with any of the FAA regulations pertaining to these aircraft."
Jeff is an all-around good guy, Vietnam veteran, and is currently working towards
his Private Pilot certificate, having recently soloed in his Kit Fox. He is
definitely on our side and worthy of our support. I will be meeting him for
breakfast on Sunday morning, and will let him know I made this post. His contact
information is as follows:

Folks -
If the bomb run, bombing a small boat in the middle of a lake in the
middle of Sanford, ME weren't reason enough to join us on Sept.14th
-17th for Red Star Fall Fly-in. There's a new wrinkle sure to make
this a very memorable event. We've been asked to do a mass form fly
over of the Portland International Jet Port. This should be
fantastic. The altitude has yet to be set, but you can be assured
it's going to be lower than pattern. This request has come direct
from the Portland tower.
So if you haven't registered yet PLEASE DO! And don't forget to book
your hotel all the info is on the web site Red Star Fall Fly-in
Questions or concerns please contact me directly.

Hope to see you there!
