So I take off and am flying along when I do an instrument check and my primary
pressure is not moving. Not going down and certainly not going up! I turn around,
head back to the airport and land without incident. Taxing in I am using air
that is not being replenished.
Pull the "output" line off the snot valve, have a brave mechanic put his finger
over the port and crank the engine....nothing! So, I have a compressor that is
Tango Uniform.
I have been told that the coupling could be inop and could replace just that instead
of the whole pump. I am in need of either.......sources??
Thanks in advance.

Tim:
Take the filter off the top of the compressor and while pulling prop through
determine if valve at the top of the compressor is moving - if it is then
you can replace the "top" or compressor alone. If the there is no movement
of the piston then you've probably sheared the drive coupling and have to
replace the right angle drive assembly.
I've done both - the former is a little easier, the latter requires lots of
patience and Gumby like agility with offset angle wrench. You have to
remove a bunch of stuff to get decent access -
Call me for the details if you want -

Tim,
Before you pull the compressor, remove the output check valve from the
compressor, clean it thoroughly and make sure the little "valve" is able to
move with the spring pressure. If the output check valve is carboned up and
the little valve is stuck, then you may have sheared the shear coupling.
Reinstall and test again for output. Did you check the line going into the
"snot" bottle for air from the compressor or did you check the output of the
snot bottle? I have seen the snot bottle so blocked up that it would not
allow the air to pass through it. It's not bad idea to pull the snot
bottle and flush it out every year or two.

We use two 12V gel batteries in series. Here's an example of the
type. http://www.elkproducts.com/products/elk-12180.htm. You'll have
to put new connectors on the leads and make a jumper between the + and -
terminals. No big deal.

what is the preferred battery to use in the YAK 52? My aircraft has
a special connector in the battery compartment that appears to mate to a
connector that is with the battery.

Dennis,
I have done what you suggested and think it is a no $hit compressor issue. I did
get some gunk cleaned out of the check valve and snot valve.
Reade, I may indeed call you for some suggestions. I looked at who to get that
thing off and if I were six inches tall with 11mm hands, I would be golden..but.....
If all else fails, I will take my .40 cal with me to the airport.
Anyone know of a source for parts for these things or is it recommended to get
the whole thing overhauled? The airplane is 22 years old and has had a rough life...until
now. I want this to be done right.

A friend of mine is looking for a basket case to rebuild. He is a incredible mechanic
with some serious restoration skills (he has done two award winning airplanes
and is working on what will surely be his third)
Anyone have any leads on a 50, 54, or 55???
NOT FLYING!!!!

To all planning on attending the Selma Fly in, please remember to update your program
letter and faxing it into you local FSDO. Even if you are within you 300
nm operating limit, the Al FSDO wants to see the Red Air Fall Fling on your
program letter. That is if one were to show up at SEM and does a ramp check. Not
saying he is but there is always a risk. Make sure you paper work is in order.
If you are unsure of what you need, check the RPA website for the Airshow
Pack recommendations.
Would all prospective students please down load a copy of the RPA FAST manual from
the website. That way you will be familiar with all the hand signs uniqe to
the NAVY!j
