Subject: | Radio Troubleshooting |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Mike Beresford <mike_beresford@yahoo.co.uk>
Hi all
I'm trying to sort out a radio problem, would
appreciate any advice from the experts.
When the aircraft was with its previous owner, the
Baklan-5 failed. The owner fitted a Bendix King, and
simply stopped using the original set-up. As far as I
know the PTT button on the fron throttle is the only
part of the system that has any connection to the old
radio.
I've been trying to get the old system working again,
as I preferred the PTT intercom / radio setup. First
had some local radio boffins look at the old Baklan-5,
but they couldn;t do anything with it. They put
another Baklan-5 in there, but couldn't get it to
transmit properly. At that point they gave up.
I've now obtained a replacement radio and selector
from Mark, which I fitted yesterday. I am finding
that:
- The intercoms work fine, just a little soft.
- The radio receives, again a little soft
- When transmitting there is an odd wave-like noise in
the headset
- Tower report "carrier wave only" (tried from both
cockpits)
I went through all the aerial connections, but
couldn't see anything out of place. Since the
intercoms work, I suspect it's not microphone wiring
related. The Bendix King is "off", so it shouldn't be
interfering with the Baklan. As far as I can see, the
Bendix-King has its own antenna.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look
next?
Thanks
Mike

Glad you are flying again. When are you slated for ACSC. That has to be on your
next staff tour agenda for a young Major.
My 50 is down for new fuel hoses that were supposed to be new from Shackety. The
fuel line from the sphere to the carb shed two 7mm fragments that FOD'd the
finger screen in the fuel inlet to the carb. That starved the engine at 98% and
850mmHg on TO. Happened just as I was pulling the power back to 80% and 800
mmHg at about 50 feet off the runway. The next step for me was to raise the gear.
I did not. The prop wound down and I dead sticked it back on the runway. Not
damage to the plane. Thank goodness the plane like to go flying in about 200
ft TO Roll. That left 2800 ft to Land and roll out on!
So not Carl and Jill Hayes get to repace my lines firewall forward. Piece of mind
is everything. That is why it's called flying and the cardinal rule in all
aviation is " fly the airplane first." Can say that having flown gliders in previous
life helped also.
Anyway, fly safe. Let us know when you get tapped for ACSC. We'll find a place
on the field for Ivan.

Me personally, no way in hell would I have flown that plane, but after this guy
doctored it up at bit, it looked flyable, but with the holes patched with a sheet
of metal and like four big spikes sticking out of it??? Never seen that
before, maybe that is a temp fix to holes in wings. Anyway yeah, I bought Dave
Hermance's 55 in late July. (Formerly called Olga, now Ivan) Love it and
now HE is N572ST ( my personalized N #) :) Ivan and I are in love :)

some guy in Tx bought if from auction, mysteriously came up and fixed the rudder
and elevator, canopy and prop disapeared, then new tires and a tail wheel showed
up, then metal plates over the holes in wings and elevator appeared and I
heard it took off from the airport on Thurs while I was at work, couldn't believe
it.

I stand corrected. The fuel line comes from the fine fuel screen filter to the
carb. That was the line that FOD'd the fine fuel screen filter. Have not gotten
the hose back from Doug to look at it yet. Will post some photos of the fragements
and the hose when it gets back from fabrication.
Well, now you know the answer to the next EP question. Guess I will have to make
the next question this: "Why is it the D#$%^d prop always stops in the vertical
when your are having to dead stick the D@#$%^d airplane!"
Fly Safe and review those EP's regualarly, Just never know when you are gonna need
them!

What keeps you from hitting the start button quickly to get it horizontal? I know
in your case that is the last thing you were worried about but if you had the
time, I think I would work that prop horizontal.

Nothing to keep me from hitting the start button. Just it was all over
within 10 to 15 seconds. I had time to make a radio call to my wingman on
TO roll, turn the mags off, and turn off the electrical along with the pull
the fuel cutoff. All at the sametime making sure I flew the airplane. Luck
was on my side along with the grace of God. 15 seconds later, I would have
been trying to fly through/between the big trees. The gear would have come
up then for sure.

Hence the reason to discourage intersection TOs. I always go to the end for the
very reason that runway behind you, altitude above you and fuel in a truck somewhere
do you no good at all.

Drew,
E-mail me about your 55M parts. Are you only looking to sell out as a whole or
part it out?
Right now I am only looking for a couple of items on the front cowl flaps/grills
to be exact. marksorenson@sprintpcs.com
