Sleiman is still a great guy. I saw him at OSH this year and we will all
see him again when our turn comes to get that final clearance to that place
where we all go. He and Rodger can practice formation together.
---
When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your
eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long
to return. - Leonardo Da Vinci
---
The aviator stood at the Pearly Gates and awaited his turn in line.
Around him the sky was the brightest blue and the clouds high-white and
edged in a golden line.
The sun shown high and bright and the breeze was cool and fair.
"Great flying weather" he thought "I guess I'll like it here".
As he approached St. Peter who with pen on the scroll of life did mark.
"Ah! An aviator I see. Are you ready to embark?"
"Yes sir" replied the aviator, " I hope I'm still allowed to fly"
"Oh yes!" replied St. Peter "and you'll find the flying great.
"The lighting will always be way below you,
The stars will be close at hand,
Why you can reach out and touch them,
There in their sparkling band.
The radio beacons will be steady.
No crackle, buzz, or wrong.
Their signals sweet and steady
Not unlike an angel's song.
The aircraft are strong and worthy
With controls smooth and sound.
Their engines never cough or sputter
Like the Maker they'll never let you down.
Yes the flying Here is all you've ever desired"
However my son," St. Peter smiled
"landings Here, are not required."

Kansas Wind Power sold the unit to me some time back. Their web site is, http://www.kansaswindpower.net/dc_accessories.htm. They have two models, I use the 10/20 amp unit. It is a little pricey but worth the cost. It works. And easy to hook up.
Hope this helps.

On this same thread, I am not familiar to a battery equalizer. Could you
please lead me to a source. I have a Yak 52 and also multiple military vehicles.
I would like to use a 12 volt winch on a 24 volt truck. Can the equalizer
handle that much amp draw on one battery?

Don't know if I can help, wish Brian was still around. If one battery goes bad
on a battery tender, it recognizes a low voltage for both when one is OK and fully
charged. It keeps on charging both batteries until both are discovered as
bad. The balancer that I put in helps eliminate this problem by draining one
battery to replenish the other, even when charging. I use two 12 volt Odyssey
batteries in series and draw off one for 12 volts. This has been since April of
05. Both are strong. I'm going to not charge the system with the Battery Tender,
while its in the hanger, and see what happens. I'm no expert, just a trial
and error guy. I have had a Battery Tender on my boat for 5 years before the
12 volt gel cell battery went bad. And It went TU in one month. From good to
nothing.

In September 2005, I put two new Gill G25S 12 volt batteries in my CJ to
which I attached a 24 volt battery tender. This past Saturday, I discovered that
they were shot after a mere 13 months. I have perhaps been mistaken in
believing that keeping batteries fully charged was good practice. Without using
a
battery tender, the last set a batteries lasted about three years. What is it
that I fail to understand --- yet again? Thanks, Blitz

Doug,
I still have your box that I was supposed to send back to you. I have another
CJ driver here that wants to buy it. Can you give me what the invoice price
was and I will have dave call you and make payment. I assume I wasn't charged
for both boxes, so you shouldn't need to credit me. Correct? Either way let
me know and I'll have Dave contact you.
Also, what is the status of the regular intake vanes that were coming in? I
need three!
Thanks

Jon,
The only options available to arrive at a completely overhauled or
completely new shutter system it to move to a titanium iris type gill system
which will cost you about 2200.00 or wait another 60 days or so until spare
shutters get in. I have the cut out shutters, new center rings and pivot
rods and screws at this time but still not have the -100 shutters.
Hang in there.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Both 285 and M14 shutters if properly adjusted will last for many years of
normal flying. The problem is that just replacing a worn shutter which has
a worn out wobbler (the arm at the bottom) is only half the problem. If the
center rings are worn, or the pivot bolt is worn, or the center screws are
worn, they will cause the early demise of your new shutter gills. Also,
care should be taken to be sure that the gill cannot move up and down, it
should be just loose enough to allow it to open and close easily. Vibration
is the killer here so check every connection to make sure that "rattle" is
at a minimum.
Composites are wonderful, and I must admit that I don't have a full grasp of
what the per unit cost of the shutters would be but I seriously doubt that
this method of construction would be effective in solving the wear problem.
It's usually not the vane portion of the shutter that goes south, it's all
the points where you have metal against metal contact. I really can't see
how composites would help this situation. The wobbler is made up of two
pieces of steel which are silver soldered together. A redesigned wobblers
with a removable wear insert would solve this problem, but again the cost
per unit might be a consideration.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

This is a sad day. Sleiman was one of the first guys to show up in
his CJ when we started the MTW gathering at OSH. He was enthusiastic
about formation and did a really good job at it. On the wall of my den
here is a picture of the first guys to fly at OSH. Brain Lloyd, Hal
Morley, Salibi, and myself are standing by Hal's CJ.. There is also a
picture of him with Brain ex wife sitting on his lap giving him a smooch
when we were all at a bar in OSH and having great time. I was sorry to
see him leave our Redstar group and move up to the T-28. It was always
great fun to catch up with him at S&F & OSH where we'd have good natured
jab about each others airplanes. He had done such a fine job of getting
his 28 on the ground at OSH when the engine started to quit - I was
proud of him. He really loved flying. He will be missed by the T-28
guys for sure.
Jim "Pappy" Goolsby
Gang,
Former CJ owner and great guy was lost yesterday. Here's the post
from the T-28 list:
Around 7PM last night Sleiman Salibi was returning home from OSH
with
his newly acquired engine. After a stop in STL he reported that
everything was going well and no performance problems. He refueled
the
plane himself and left for Lake Charles LA. A 3 hour flight. He
was
suppose to arrive at 7:30 PM. He called Alexandria LA at about 7PM
and
reported low fuel and that he was diverting. He was lost on radar
shortly afterwards. A SAR helicopter was sent out immediately but
quickly returned because of weather. He was last reported over a
large
National forest north of Alexandria. The LA air guard and CAP have
resumed the search today. No ELT signal identified. Lets pray for
a
good outcome on this.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I just received word from
Misty
through Skydoc that they found the wreckage of Sleiman's plane
with his body in
it 25 miles north of Alexandria, LA. No other details are
available at this
time. She asked that I put this message on the T-28 net to inform
all their
friends. When I get word of the funeral arrangements, I will post
them.

Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends....
