I used a 10 micron filter plumbed into the oil line that is just prior to
entering into the oil cooler. 50 hours on it and absolutely no problems.
The location is clean and easy. No lines to cut into, and only one line to
form. It keeps the clutter away from the engine. Changing the filter does
not spill onto the airframe. Since you don't have to cut any lines, you
have the option of going back to the original configuration in the field
if you need to. See attached for location and fit. The filter is for high
performance autos. If you are interested, I'd have to check my notes on
where it came from.

I've use the system on my airplane 'since day one'. I read some where, that

the 10 micron filter. I really believe it kept a lot more damage from
happening to the engine, when at 438 hours a improperly factory installed ring
let

My engine has 1300 hours on it now. I use straight 50 or 60 weight
detergent oil, changed every 30 to 35 hours. Compressions are in the low to mid
70's. The engine is now using around 1 qt every 1 1/2 hours. I also have a
pre-oiler which I use on the first start of each day.

I think the Gorilla is overkill for our size engines since the Gorilla was
designed for large radial engines of 2000 Cu.In. and above. But Airwolf
does manufacture other remote oil filter kits that could easily be adapted
to our radial engines.

Serial Numbers
For 50 and 52, the first two digits of the serial number is the year of
manufacture.
Remember however that all Yak-50s in Russia were ordered to be scraped
in 1985 when the 55 was introduced.
So out of 307 made, less 8 to East Germany (DDI) and 7 to Bulgaria means
292 left in Russia.
The 65 or so that remain are either because local flying clubs in Russia
did not scrap them, or pretended to, and then resurrected aircraft from
mixed components.
Also remember that far more sets of wings were made than aircraft, since
Russian Team aircraft were destined to be flown very hard, and then the
wings changed at 45 hours. So often these serial numbers will not
match fuselages.

Subject: | Re: Rough Running Latest |
As we speak, he is converting my 50. Came back yesterday evening with a cold cylinder
on #7 and running rough on the #1 mag. on airborne mag check. Cut the
sortie short and RTB'd. Measured the cylinder head temps with a laser thermometer.
All but #7 were in the 230 to 240 deg C temps. Thought about the options,
talked to Dennis and said instead of chasing a bad plug and plug wire, bite the
bullet an convert. These are Russian plugs and wires that are over 5 years
old. They were not as best as I can tell changed at the time of IRAN at Shackety.
Sure, I can test the plugs on the champion plug testor, change the front (#1
mag) plug to the back (#2 mag supplied plug wire) and do hi tension testing
of the plug wires. After doing airborn mag tests to see if the problem went away,
I will have spent just as much time as to do the change. So Am biting the
bullet and converting.

Subject: | Oil Filter Recommendations |
Funny this topic should appear just as I am negotiating a deal for a Marion replacement.
As many know, I acquired about about 8 cases of the Marion S-28-MG filters
some time ago and sold many for around $10 or so each in lots of 6. Sadly,
I'm on my last case and it's for "ME".
Today's quote was $22 each at retail for the Maradyne (Marion trade name still).
Therefore, I have found a couple of 10 micron element spin-on replacement makers.
Very soon, I'll publish my web-site with replacements at around $10 each
that will exactly replace the Marion. I'll also have low-priced die cast aluminum
heads with 3/4" NPT Inlet/Outlet ports that fit these filters as well as
the Marion.
In case anyone wonders, there are Fram truck filters that work but the filter
ratings are unknown. These types of paper elements have also been known to fail
in aircraft applications where humid conditions cause "clumping" within the
filter.
And that's not all the goodies I'll have folks .... stay tuned.

Subject: | Recommendations for oil filter system |
I have installed an airwolf system on a CJ. They are supporters of the
Redstar magazine. If anyone orders one please thank John (the owner) for
supporting our group.
Since putting on the filter I change oil at 45 hr intervals. In 3 oil
changes I should pay for the system in labor savings.
My oil analysis has also gotten better with the filter.
This is one mod I recommend for all our planes

I think the Gorilla is overkill for our size engines since the Gorilla was
designed for large radial engines of 2000 Cu.In. and above. But Airwolf
does manufacture other remote oil filter kits that could easily be adapted
to our radial engines.

Subject: | Recommendations for oil filter system |
Hi Dennis,
I hope all is well with you and yours.
I am using a standard Champion CH48109. The oil filter adapter is from J.C
Whitney and is listed in their catalog as: Oil Filter Relocation kit, part
#14DY6174A. Price is about $50.00 for the kit which included other stuff
you won't need. I have it mounted on the firewall on the right side between
the firewall's edge and the air starter - perfect location (at least for
me). You will need 2ea -12 90degrees angled fitting (one of them on a
swivel) and the male-to-male threaded adaptor (to accept the CH-4801) - this
is a standard threaded adaptor.
The filter is mounted inverted, thus minimizing oil spills at change time.
It's been working great for the past 5 years.
Happy Holidays to All Red Star lovers!
