Subject: | how does the starting coil work exactly |
Hi all,
This has been intriguing to me, so I try to figure out what happens exactly.
Is the following reasoning correct, or am I missing it completely?
When pushing the start-button, the magnetos are still off. The high-tension
starting coil gets current from the battery to its primary winding, and the
changing flux causes a high voltage on the secondary winding. The left-hand
magneto (front plugs) has a special connection for this coil, and this high
tension is immediately conducted to the proper spark plug via the
distributor on the left hand magneto.
If I understand this well, you get only one spark from the start coil, and
you have to switch on the magneto's immediately after hearing one
"explosion"?
I always thought that there was a sort of "shower of sparks" generator ?
Is this system different on the Yak 50 and 52, or even compared with the
CJ's ?

Karl,
The unit is located above the Russian Radio control panel on the right side of
your instrument panel. I has two white knobs on it. It is held in the instrument
panel by 4 screws. I do not have a schematic for the intercom. Maybe someone
else on the list does. If you are kicking off the circuit breaker, it sounds
like you have a short in the wiring harness which a whole lot of fun to chase
down.

Subject: Yak-List: Yak-52 intercom
Hi everyone,
We have a YAK-52 in our club which has developed an intercom problem. As soon us
one switches the intercom on, the circuit breaker/switch cuts out.
Where is the intercom located in the YAK? Is it part of the radio?
Thanks

Jan;
Your operational description of the boost coil is right on.
The spark is continuous (to the distributor starting finger) as long as
the button is depressed and the engine would continue to run on the left
mag only. Switching to both mags immediately keeps boost coil operation
time to a minimum and avoids fouling of the right hand spark plugs.

Question for all. When you service the main Ldg strut with Nitrogen ( 735
psi ) is it with the
plane on its wheels or on the jacks? I can not find any ref to this in the
books.

Hi Tom;
Either way, doesn't matter. Sruts are fully extended at that pressure
with the A/C weight on them.
Pressure for mains is 48 ATM (700 psi) and nose 20 ATM (290 psi)
Cheers
Walt

Depends what you mean by servicing. Checking the fluid level or changing it requires
putting the airplane on the jacks and releasing the pressure in the shocks
to remove the valve. I say changing it because you on't really know how much
is in there without draining out the old. Go by the book when adding a measured
amount of fluid and the replace the valve and pressurize.
BTW, a bit of Granville strut seal worked wonders for my shocks.

Anybody knows how to get a copy of the YAK52 structural repair manual
and/or illustrated parts manual.
Or something similar if the above do not exist?
Romanian version is OK. I can translate it.
Thank you
