Beat me to it, in my TW, the Aux Fuel tank is both the Smoke Oil tank and a
Aux Fuel tank, so trash in the tank is a big deal..

Doc and all,
I know some people dont care for smoke (Dennis!), but I cant live without
it. I cant tell you how many times it has come in essential to either avoid
other aircraft, or have someone find me to effect a rejoin.
I had a great smoke system in the CJ that Val is now care takingthe best
around. I just put a smoke system in my new airplane and I would not,
repeat NOT, recommend it to anyone. It was a smokingairplanes.com system.
It was touted as easy to install (it was) and convenient since it is a
complete kit (it is.) Having said that, IMHO, I found that the system
components were not aviation gradelots of cheap plastic parts. I was very
reluctant to tighten down the fittings much for fear they would crackand
that is exactly what they did after my first flight I had a quart of smoke
oil in the belly of the new airplane due to a cracked plastic fitting. (and
yes it was leak tested on the ground prior to the first flight). This system
has easily cost me twice the purchase price already. When I told the owner
that we were going to have to re-plumb the whole system, he apologized, and
then cautioned me not to over-tighten any fitting going to the smoke
pumpyou guessed it, another plastic fitting (Also, in a service bulletin,
he stated that there have been two in-flight fires as a result of broken
welds in the smoke injector fittings in his smoke systems. The remedy?
Safety wire them to the exhaust?!) I know that there are Yak owners with
his systemsI hope you have better luck than I did. Please be careful, and
frequently inspect the system, fittings and smoke injectors.
Given that smoke oil WILL burn, and fires are generally bad, dont go cheap
on your smoke system.

Linedogg,
Thanks for the info. What system did you have in your CJ (BV...before Val)?
Since I am toying with the idea of smoke on the 50 but have not firmed up on a
system. It will come after the plumbing the wings for strobes and installing the
wingtips. To many irons in the fire and to little time to tend them! Smoke
will come later this year.

I have to humbly disagree with Jeff on this one. I have the Smoking
Airplanes system and have been very happy with it. I had one issue
with a busted line, but that was my doing and not the fault of the
system. I know a number of Yak and Cj drivers with the Smoking
Airplane system who are as satisfied as I am.

Just wanted to introduce myself. Yesterday I became the proud owner of
a YAK 52K serial 9912205, tail N90GC. I picked up the aircraft in
Kansas City and flew it back to Ohio. The aircraft is now based at the
Union County airport in Marysville Ohio (MRT). Special thanks to
Stephen Beaver who accompanied me to Kansas, went over the aircraft from
spinner to tail for the pre-buy. Steve also flew back with me in the
YAK giving me training all along 525 mile trip.
I'm sure there will be a few things I'll want to do the aircraft in the
upcoming year. Number one will be to get the analog western style fuel
gauges to match up with the senders. If anyone has some instruction on
performing that calibration, please pass that on to me. The aircraft
has a small toggle on the right side that switches the fuel gauges from
the main to the aux tanks. None of them read correctly. Number two
will be to install an EI fuel flow indicator. If anyone has experience
with installing the fuel flow transducer such as best location and where
to buy the proper connectors or adaptors and hose fittings, I would
greatly appreciate that info.
I'm looking forward to flying the YAK and meeting/flying with other
owners in the Ohio are or in nearby states! Get intouch with me offline
at craig@ustek.com if you're in my area.

I would have to completely agree with Jeff. The system that Tim Williams
has put together for our TW's is "homemade" but made completely of aviation
grade components, as we fly too much and too hard to take chances. I will
try to take some more pictures, and detail the parts and system - I had
planned on having the information at Waycross to share with anyone that is
interested. I think it will be a great round table discussion over a beer
as well.

Subject: | Re: Smoke Systems |
I have the smoking planes system and it has had no problems but I
respect Jeffs comments ands will be wary of the problems. I am
interested in Tim and David's system as the smoking planes system has
some design improvement opportunities. Size of the tank is limited.
If you go out and rip it up for longer than 15 mins you are out of
smoke. Smoke is good to visualize your lines in practice. You know
you nailed the loop or the cuban if you come over the top and aim for
your entry. Or if you nail the downline parallel to your upline - etc.
The smoking planes system is also way aft. it has to be limited in
volume because it has to be limited in weight. If a back seater is
not a child (my son), you can't fill the tank and expect to play
safely due to an aft CG. It also hard to fill too. Clear Canopus in
and opaque white tank is hard to see and it is hard to pump out of a
barrel underneath the back window - I have overuns occasionally -
messy messy.
Just some other thoughts.

a special build as I have a 1 1/2 inch fill port so I had many calls to
John and he was easy to work with.
And there has been some issues as these system have gotten some time in
service. I would like to thank John for his forthrightness in dealing
with them. He has called and or sent E-mails ( Service bulletins ) and
replacement parts to correct these problems at NO cost. This is not the

vendors. And yes I had a gallon plus of oil in the belly, My fault but there
will never be corrosion there either.

Herb,
The CG was one important aspect of why we chose the aux on the TW, we are
using locking fuel caps ( so the line guy does not fuel the smoke tank..
when it is a smoke tank ) , also we are using a manual valve located under
the wing to control the separation of the fuel and smoke oil systems. Tim
and I can not take full credit, as the general idea came from the AeroStar's
team, as they use a similar design.
In the TW, we have the luxury of 2 aux tanks, so we can "dedicated" one of
them for smoke oil for most of the time except for the longer trips..

I have the smoking planes system and it has had no problems but I respect
Jeffs comments ands will be wary of the problems. I am interested in Tim
and David's system as the smoking planes system has some design improvement
opportunities. Size of the tank is limited. If you go out and rip it up
for longer than 15 mins you are out of smoke. Smoke is good to visualize
your lines in practice. You know you nailed the loop or the cuban if you
come over the top and aim for your entry. Or if you nail the downline
parallel to your upline - etc.
The smoking planes system is also way aft. it has to be limited in volume
because it has to be limited in weight. If a back seater is not a child (my
son), you can't fill the tank and expect to play safely due to an aft CG.
It also hard to fill too. Clear Canopus in and opaque white tank is hard to
see and it is hard to pump out of a barrel underneath the back window - I
have overuns occasionally - messy messy.
Just some other thoughts.

I would have to completely agree with Jeff. The system that Tim Williams

planned on having the information at Waycross to share with anyone that is
interested. I think it will be a great round table discussion over a beer

Doc and all,
I know some people don't care for smoke (Dennis.!), but I can't live without
it. I can't tell you how many times it has come in essential to either avoid
other aircraft, or have someone find me to effect a rejoin.
I had a great smoke system in the CJ that Val is now care taking.the best
around. I just put a smoke system in my new airplane and I would not,
repeat NOT, recommend it to anyone. It was a smokingairplanes.com system.
It was touted as easy to install (it was) and convenient since it is a
complete kit (it is.) Having said that, IMHO, I found that the system
components were not "aviation grade".lots of cheap plastic parts. I was very
reluctant to tighten down the fittings much for fear they would crack.and
that is exactly what they did. after my first flight I had a quart of smoke
oil in the belly of the new airplane due to a cracked plastic fitting. (.and
yes it was leak tested on the ground prior to the first flight). This system
has easily cost me twice the purchase price already. When I told the owner
that we were going to have to re-plumb the whole system, he apologized, and
then cautioned me not to over-tighten any fitting going to the smoke
pump.you guessed it, another plastic fitting. (Also, in a service bulletin,
he stated that there have been two in-flight fires as a result of broken
welds in the smoke injector fittings in his smoke systems. The remedy?
Safety wire them to the exhaust?!) I know that there are Yak owners with
his systems.I hope you have better luck than I did. Please be careful, and
frequently inspect the system, fittings and smoke injectors.
Given that smoke oil WILL burn, and fires are generally bad, don't go cheap
on your smoke system.

The RedStar Unit Challenge Coin
Have you renewed for 2007??
If you did not renew for 2007, membership expired Jan 1st!
Please head to www.flyredstar.org and renew by clicking the "become a
member" link right on the home page. You can renew through a paper mail
in application, but it's cheaper and easier for us all when done online.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Challenge Coins Are Here for 2007!!
The concept of a Unit Challenge Coin is a long tradition in
the Armed Forces and has spread to non military organizations as well
(Police, SWAT, Fire Department, etc.) and we've recently sent the
RedStar Pilots Association's mock up for our own coin to be minted.
The basic tradition of the unit coin is simple; keep it on
hand at all times, it represents membership in the organization, if for
any reason, voluntary or by accident, a coin is produced and struck or
tapped against anything solid (as in the case it were to be
inadvertantly dropped), this signifies a "coin check" of all present
within earshot. Those members unable to produce their coin are obliged
to buy the round for those who do. Tradiationally your unit coin can
not be drilled or fastened with a permenante ring or other retainer for
string or necklace, it needs to be retained in its original condition
except for personal identification (some folks etch their call signs in
to the coin).
All our coins (1.75 inches) will carry the unit insignia on
the front and a formation of of our most popular aircraft in detail
raised relief on the back and are multi-colored and numbered. If our
jet aircraft membership rises in 2007 a coin will be struck with a
differant back, but the front will always retain the unit insignia of
the association. Clinic/Fly-in organizers will be issued the coins for
re-sale at events at a break even cost of around $8-10.00 each based on
final production fees. And soon afterward they will be avaialble to
"members only" through the store.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Parade Formation Qualification
We are working to finish up the new Formation Training Folders
and Solo Formation Training Cards. These are tools for the student of
formation and the clinic instructor to improve our clinic training.
Wing, Lead candidates and Instructors will see these tools, and
explanation of their use, at clinics in 2007. Along with an updatred
manual the RPA will have some excellent training tools for some time to
come. Another item on our list for "The Year In Training" is a record
of your accomplishments in pursuit of your formation skills. We've
designed exceptionally nice certificates for Four Ship
Wingman-in-Training Solo criteria and of course the Wing and Flight Lead
Certificate for successful completion of your practical test/check ride.
These are being professionally produced for mounting on a hero wall in
your den or in the hangar. I will make these available for all those
that now currently hold the wing or lead rating, probably through the
clinics and fly-ins.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Selling a Yak, CJ, L-29 or Cessna?...or are you looking to
buy an Eastern Block aircraft?
Take a look at the new member aircraft sales section at
www.flyredstar.org . You can, in minutes, post your aircraft for sale
and it will display to all folks, member or vistor, who browse the
website. See who's selling their warbird with complete stats, price and
pictures - just click on the thumbnail photos for expanded coverage of
the sale offer. We have put a prominent link on the home page soon, and
you can find it right now under "Services" option of the main navigation
bar. Post your for-sales at flyredstar...

mail=rvfltd@televar.com> www.flyredstar.org and renew by clicking the

_____
Challenge Coins Are Here for 2007!!
The concept of a Unit Challenge Coin is a long tradition in the Armed Forces
and has spread to non military organizations as well (Police, SWAT, Fire
Department, etc.) and we've recently sent the RedStar Pilots Association's
mock up for our own coin to be minted.
The basic tradition of the unit coin is simple; keep it on hand at all
times, it represents membership in the organization, if for any reason,
voluntary or by accident, a coin is produced and struck or tapped against
anything solid (as in the case it were to be inadvertantly dropped), this
signifies a "coin check" of all present within earshot. Those members unable
to produce their coin are obliged to buy the round for those who do.
Tradiationally your unit coin can not be drilled or fastened with a
permenante ring or other retainer for string or necklace, it needs to be
retained in its original condition except for personal identification (some
folks etch their call signs in to the coin).
All our coins (1.75 inches) will carry the unit insignia on the front and a
formation of of our most popular aircraft in detail raised relief on the
back and are multi-colored and numbered. If our jet aircraft membership
rises in 2007 a coin will be struck with a differant back, but the front
will always retain the unit insignia of the association. Clinic/Fly-in
organizers will be issued the coins for re-sale at events at a break even
cost of around $8-10.00 each based on final production fees. And soon
afterward they will be avaialble to "members only" through the store.
_____
Your Parade Formation Qualification
We are working to finish up the new Formation Training Folders and Solo
Formation Training Cards. These are tools for the student of formation and
the clinic instructor to improve our clinic training. Wing, Lead candidates
and Instructors will see these tools, and explanation of their use, at
clinics in 2007. Along with an updatred manual the RPA will have some
excellent training tools for some time to come. Another item on our list for
"The Year In Training" is a record of your accomplishments in pursuit of
your formation skills. We've designed exceptionally nice certificates for
Four Ship Wingman-in-Training Solo criteria and of course the Wing and
Flight Lead Certificate for successful completion of your practical
test/check ride. These are being professionally produced for mounting on a
hero wall in your den or in the hangar. I will make these available for all
those that now currently hold the wing or lead rating, probably through the
clinics and fly-ins.

I have the smoking airplane system in my CJ as well and I haven't had a
problem I am a little concerned with the safety wire "fix" for the
potential broken weld, but the whole system has been solid for 18 months.

I like the Coin Idea. And even if I didn't I would buy one to support the
hard work and effort the individuals put into this community.
If I REALLY didn't like It I would buy one and then offer a suggestion of
something better to do that might accomplish the desired goals.. And what
might a coin accomplish.??? A sense community, comradery, and spirit.. At
least it would be memorabilia I can talk to my kids and grandkids about
someday.

Before we all get a bit carried away screaming about how this might be a
dumb idea or not. You will be buying these coin/s thus they are supposed to
be a small income generator or at least pay for themselves not an expense .
Now I think if the RPA membership thinks this is a stupid idea and no one
wants them we should each email Drew individually and let him know. Rants on
a list are easy to ignore while a pile of individual emails are not. It also
eliminates a bunch of repetitive emails all on the same subject that have
really nothing to do with our planes or flying coming through all our
emails.

Fox-Men and Tom,
Didnt mean to step on your toes with my comments about the
smokingairplanes.com smoke system: I am sure you are extra careful in
maintaining your airplanes, and I am glad they are working well for you.
I just want to put forth words of caution to those thinking of smoke systems
in their airplanes. I try to error to the safe side when it comes to
airborne vehicles, especially ones with just one motor and no ejection
seat This is just my opinion: plastic fittings and flammable liquids
should not go together, even on the back side of the firewall. I should have
known better when I saw the system components, and feel that my experience
with the cracked fitting/leak was my wake-up call to knock-it-off and do it
right. I felt compelled to share my concerns and experience
