I spent hours Friday searching for metric aluminum tubing to replace damaged tubing connecting the main air valve, terminating at the aft bulkhead next to the rear seat. I bought a roll of 1/4" copper tube and decided to resize and use the metric fittings from my old air line. I tried a few different methods of shrinking the tube with poor results. I decided to tie one end of the copper to my trailer hitch and the other to a come-a-long attached to another vehicle. I stretched the tube and checked the diameter with a micrometer until I had the desired diameter. My shade tree engineering worked better than I hoped for. I replaced the damaged tubing with the newly sized copper used the original fittings and went flying. I was told 1/4" tubing (un-stretched) is good for 4000 psi. I am guessing if I lose half the strength in the stretching process, I still have a safety factor of around 2. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't use copper? I have found it difficult to find metric aluminum tubing and have substituted copper tubing and not had any problems whatsoever. Maybe someone else on the Yak list has a good source for 6 mm and 8 mm aluminum tubing. From: "flir47" Phil Copper has a propensity to work harden over time. By stretching it you have accelerated this process. I would replace it as soon as possible. Vibration from the airframe will be the cause of failure. Very industrious on your part though. Good luck and safe flying! -------- You built and fly an RV.......BIG DEAL!!!! My wife goT accepted to Vet school at the University of Penn! Does anyone have recommendations on Yakk'in in the Philly area? I'd like to get my name on a list for a hangar and get an idea of who the local mechanics are and where they can be found. General area advice such as where to live or tips for Vet School students (if anyone on list may have that kind of experience as well) would helpful as well. Thanks in advance! PHIL Copper can be annealed (softened) by heating and quenching. ----- Original Message ----- From: "flir47" Sent: Sunday, February 11, 2007 6:06 PM Subject: Yak-List: Re: Copper Tubing For Replacement Air Line??? > > Phil > > Copper has a propensity to work harden over time. My YAK-50 has some electrical problems (again) that are turning out to be less than fun. I found some wires that were shorting out when the Voltage Regulator moved in it's shock mount.... All YAK owners note... this is apparently very common and we all should pop the regulator out of it's month and check for wife chaffing. Mine were, fixed same. \ Also found various wires rubbing through to bare metal in the nose compartment (50 only). The generator is putting out 28 volts at rated RPM (I have not checked it under load yet), but the Generator light is on constantly and I have no current flow from the generator into the main bus. There are some relays in there that operate with comparison of battery to Generator voltages, and so forth, and I am hoping that the 50 is close enough to the 52 in this regard to use their schematics. This is going to end up being a contact by wire by contact by wire tracing job I am sure. That said, I could sure use 52 electrical schematics if someone could be so kind. Thanks for any and all efforts, Mark Bitterlich N50YK p.s. I am tempted to just pull all that happy horse manure out of there and just install a B&C, but $$$$$$. ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 10:08:30 PM PST US From: "Jan Mevis" Subject: RE: Yak-List: Need Schematic I'm considering the B&C alternator too, since having also a lot of noise (already did Dennis' plug conversion, which works great by the way. So this radio noise does not come from the plug wires). The Voltage Regulator in my YK50 does not work very well either. It seems that during the overhaul in Russia in 2001 a lot of 52 wiring has been done in my plane (this implies a bunch of cables that are only partly used). Good luck Mark!
