Besides, what are you going to do with carb temp. The 50 does not have
carb
heat. At least mine does not.
Roger, YAK 18 (all types) 50, 52 have carb heat as standard. In service
they will crack if not supported so the Ruskies removed them when they
broke. Simple fix solution but....as pointed out carb ice does affect the
engine at 0-+5'c usually at idle when ground warming the engine or on
approach to land. When landing the first sign is that when you need power
the throttle cant be advanced. Then you crash on the under shoot in bad
cases as happened to a 55 in the UK. When on the ground the engine stops and
you wonder why as it started again as soon as the you got out and walked
around !!
We always fit and ensure that carb heat works on all YAK's over here.

Thanks for the info Mark,
Remember our worst winter flying day in Lower Alabama is 35- 40 deg F. Me
personally, I am not flying in colder (we do get there occasionally). But
having carb heat is not a bad idea. We can hash the effects of a venturi on
the cooling of air and carb icing at 80 deg F. also, but most of our A/C
coming from Lithuania arrive without the Ram Horns.

So that just leaves the other YAK DC power mystery ... why does the battery discharge
if the master switch is (mistakenly) left in the external power position
(down)?
According to the schematics the battery should be isolated & nothing should form
a load ... but something does, as this occurs on -52s & I think on -50s too.
Don't know if the CJ's have the same problem.

I'm looking for an Air Water Separator, either the original russain
with the snot valve drain or an equivalent. I have the overboard
pressure relief drain, but still get enormous snot build-up in the
tank. Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

Rob,
As you have said, schematically it is virtually impossible for that to
happen. In fact, on my personal airplane (52) I have left the
battery/external power switch down for days at a time and did not have any
discharging of the aircraft battery. So whatever is causing it is not
reflected in the electrical schematics.

Steve,
Sorry to challenge you on this one, but WHERE do they fit fine on the Yak
52? That is, without modification. The ones that Doug has are outstanding.
But unfortunately they are 3 times the size of the stock air filter on the
Yak 52 and unless someone has made a modification to the system, they will
not fit on the firewall in place of the stock air filter.
