Subject: | Yak-52 Brake Cable News |
We test fit the prototype of the front brake cable assembly we are going
to produce for the '52.
Problems we are attempting to fix are stretch of cable, breaking of
cable at ball ends and adjusters breaking. All of these weaknesses can
lead to a brake failure, usually at a time in the vacinity of people and
planes....not good.
In evaluating the common weaknesses of the original, we are changing the
following:
Cable size increased to avoid stretch.
AN clevis ends designed for use with swaged cable balls.
1/8 inch additional adjustment on each working end of the cable.
4 inch additional working length of cable to allow for more convenient
positioning.
Formed thinwall aluminum guide to securely and accurately make the 90
degree radius as the cable transitions from fore-aft to side to side
direction as it approaches the termination at the air valve just right
of the rear control stick.
In making multiple cable changes over the years, mods have been made to
the plane in an attempt attempt to make it faster to change and reduce
failure points. Here is what was done:
The (front) cable tends to get pinched during full back-right stick
excursions. Additional working room was gained by using a dremmel tool
to widen the gap between the boot collar and the stick.
A 2" x 2" access port was opened in the rear floor with a dremmel tool.
This opening is located directly above the rear-top attach point of the
front brake cable clevis were it connects to the valve. It is covered
with a piece of .024 Alclad held down by the rudder cable guard and
right rear foot access panel.
We will make up a dozen when testing is complete. Price is expected to
be at $100. Anyone with an interest in ordering one, please reply to me
directly at John@HighPerformanceAircraftProducts.com
I will keep you posted.

All sounds good - like to add my 2c to design spec...
I operate other machines that use cables and find the difference in feel is
huge between the Yak brake and e.g. a high performance motorcycle clutch
cable. The Yak cable simply has too much friction between the inner and
outer cables.
Cables are available with a Teflon (I think that's what it is) lining that
should on the Yak improve the feel and reduce the pressure required
substantially, also then no need to oil the cable which means no dirt which
means longer life etc. etc.
I rebuilt my sons trick bike's brakes with such high grade cables and he
could not believe the difference.
Thoughts?

Tom Johnson has been using/recommending hi tech (read "modern") cycle
type cables for 52 brakes for some time now.

I don't have one to use as a template and no personal experience with it
to cuss at failures and wonder how it could be made better.

I just got tired of seeing "other" experimentals and the Yak community not being
recognized. Plus I wanted to see if they would really post it and its cool to
see my bird in EAA!
We need a story about Yaks!
