    Subject: MTW / OSH 2007
RED STAR PILOTS !!! Oshkosh is 2 months away !! The event is posted on the web site and I am emailing details to the Yak-list. Spread the news. Whoever does the e-comms may copy and also put in the news letter. Oshkosh Airventure starts Monday 7-23 and runs until Sunday 7-29 http://www.airventure.org/ Red Stars will gather at Manitowoc starting the weekend before - Friday 7-20, Saturday 7-21, Sunday 7-22. We will base out of the EAA hanger at MTW. They have allowed us to use it for the last few years. Jim "Pappy" Goolsby will be leading the mass formation practice out of MTW. The plan is to not have as much activity in MTW after airventure begins in OSH. I anticipate that a group will stay in MTW during the week due to hotel availability. They will gather and come to OSH in the morning and return to MTW after the airshow or in the afternoons. Lets try to stay together - MTW for the weekend then OSH by Monday. During the week we will depart MTW and recover in OSH for the warbird briefings. then fly in the warbird portion of the airshow. Any Yaks/ CJs based in OSH for the week can gather for EAAs warbird briefing (new pilots) and the Red Star briefing just northwest of the warbird tower/building. The larger our numbers grow and the quality formation work we do will help to get lower altitudes and more regognition for the airshow. Some guys will recover at OSH - some will recover at MTW. RV IF ANYONE WANTS TO USE THE RV SPOT IN THE WARBIRD AREA LET ME KNOW!!! I need to know if we wil have a RV here to let Bill Fischer at EAA know our plans. If you want to bring an RV contact me off list. FIrst one to commit gets it. The RV needs to be parked there on Saturday 7-21 at the latest. Water and electricity available. Sewer dump comes around a couple of times per week. LET ME KNOW ASAP if you can / want to bring an RV. If you want to rent an RV locally and have it set up on the site I can arrange. IT BE YOUR COST FOR THE WEEK. I rented one 2 years ago and last year borrowed one. If no one brings or rents an RV for the week, I will get a larger and nicer vendor tent. We can set up a rent-a-tent for the week for briefings, hang out, etc. I can get a heavier duty vendor type tent with sidewalls for the site. A tent in the warbird flightline area again is great to gather, get some shade and a cool drink. Look for the banners. Even if you do not plan on flying in the mass formation - come hang out. AEROBATICS BOX - The waiver application is into the FAA. The application is the same as last year - but you never know with the local FSDO. The box will be over the field at MTW and can be activated with phone call anytime between 7AM and 9PM local time. Bring your altitude waivers (ACE card) and have fun!! SERGEI BORIAK - Sergei will be here for the week. In the past people have told me they will fly with him and then not flown during the week. I get him here and pay his travel based on having at least 6 pilots to fly - this covers his expenses. This year there will be an event - "SERGEI BORIAK" on the web site. If you want to fly with Sergei you have to commit by signing up and the event fee is $100. He will then fly with you for $150/hour - pay directly to Sergei. If we do not have 6 pilots then I will cancel Sergei. If we have more than 6 I will refund the extra costs. You only pay the event fee once. Even if you fly 2 or 3 flights I already have 2 pilots. We have enough time for more flights with him this year as he can arrive Friday 7-20 and fly out of MTW. He will probably stay the whole week in MTW as he may fly in the afternoon airshows. He will be available thru the week to fly out of OSH also. It is worth it. I have flown with him several times. You will have fun and learn more in that hour than you can imagine. He will suit the flight to your needs - easy beginner stuff like loops and rolls - to inverted spins, lomchavaks, etc. Some video from 3 years ago. http://web.mac.com/hscuzz/iWeb/Yak%20Videos/Spin.html RODGER MODGLIN DINNER. I am unsure if the memorial dinner for Rodger's scholarship fund will be an annual event. I contacted Zoe and Ashley and it sounded like there will not be a dinner this year. Stay tuned. FBO Lakeshore Aviation at MTW. They will coordinate fuel and oil with a tag system as in the past. Contact info - Curt Drumm - owner 920-682-0043 Of course Basler and Orion on the field at OSH. HOTELS - Heritage Inn - 908 Washington Manitowoc, WI 54220 920-682-8271 Ask for RedStar Pilots rate - about 55$ Holiday Inn - 4601 Calumet Manitowoc, WI 54220 866-270-5110 RENTAL CARS - U-Save Auto - 1015 South 26th St 920-682-8024 Luloffs - 1401 Washington 920-682-0121 Enterprise - 4611 Expo Dr 920-652-9994 OSH INFO http://www.airventure.org COST The only cost is flying with Sergei if you want to. And CONTRIBUTE TO THE DRINK KITTY IN MTW. I will only be available the weekend before (7-20 to 22) and thru Wednesday on the ground at OSH. If someone parks an RV in the spot - please work out a drink kitty with them. If you cannot register on the web site - SEND ME AN EMAIL TO LET ME KNOW YOU ARE COMING !! INCLUDE: Pilot ---- GIB ---- N# ----- Type ---- Wing / Lead / None Arrival date ---- Sergei - Yes / No ? Preferred Oil --- DON'T FORGET - FAA is at OSH and there are special requirements to fly in the airshow. Bring the necessary documents !!! Just a thought, everyone from the Southeast I know will be based at OSH like last year, and it made for a much more enjoyable Airventure. I would encourage all that are flying a MTW before OSH to consider basing at OSH for the show. Two Major Reasons - - Your happiness - you can relax before and after the show, and might actually get to enjoy it.. Costs - fuel flying back and forth , stress of making the briefings, etc.. - The RedStar Association - we made a very good impression on the organizers this year at Sun-n-Fun by bringing a lot of planes, and FLYING a lot of planes. If we are going to continue to gain credibility , we need all the planes we have. Plus, we are going to have the CJ deal next year, and it will be a good practice to have the logistics working out. - Lastly, mass briefings - at SnF 07' , we found some success in a changed briefing schedule - We have started having a early morning brief ( everyone ), then a short brief after the 'airshow brief' closer to our time to fly. This has allowed for more planning, discussion , and less rush to the planes. Thus, if someone is flying in the show, they will need to get up even earlier now, in order to make the show. Then we know how many, what we are flying, well prior to the airshow brief, and the flight. Just some thoughts, looking forward to seeing everyone again. Subject: On behalf of Dragon Flight, thanks for you help this morning
One last personal note - we learned that most General aviation pilots do not know what a "RedStar Flight of 9" is.. a humorus episode followed in Cedar Key before Sun-n-Fun. ( also, allow for the southern drawl of the words.. mind you..) While coordinating with a Cessna inbound the Cedar Key, I was letting him know where the flight of 9 was, and what we would be doing and where.. and working with him as we all heading to the Cedar Key International Airport hair care and tire center.. Anyway, he figured out late what a "flight of 9" was , when he came on the radio when he finally had visual.. " Roger, holy crap, you have a lots of planes there Flight-9" Anyway, just good lessons across the board in the overall discussion. Our terms are not always well known. David "Talon - Flight of 9" McGirt From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Drew Blahnick Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2007 8:47 PM Subject: Yak-List: On behalf of Dragon Flight, thanks for you help this morning Folks, The discussion has been lively on the issue of formation ops at non towered fields concerning the recent near miss. Some of our pilots involved are writing up a "There I was..." article for the magazine, with some recommendations taken in part from all the responses in your posts here. Although I may not see every post on the yak list, I wanted to support something Cliff wrote in his post below: The next time you hear good callouts from a spam can driver, go up to him when he's tying down and compliment him on his procedure. He'll appreciate it, you'll feel good and you will have created a very attentive joint user of the airspace from that point on. Cliff Umscheid, YAK 50 Our use of disciplined radio procedures, brevity in formation communications, pre-coodination of formation operations with local agencys when needed (tower controllers) and the use of the occassional "thank you" produces a culture in RedStar that serves you, the warbid owner, well. As we go through our paces marshalling the flight into or out of the airport, I try to end it with a thank you to the controllers - as you might imagine, this professional courtesy often produces the patience and extra effort (traffic coordination for example) that we all need/desire from these folks... Please Note: Formation qualified or not, even if your Yak, CJ or L-29/39 is down for MX or in the paint shop (bring the Cessna), If you live in OK, KS, LA or TX, or anywhere in the SouthCentral region, the RPA is sponsoring a Fly-In/meet and greet and "future central event" planning session for May 10-13th at a field "near Dallas" ( inquotations as the Texans are scrubbing a few local airports in te area). I've recieved several requests for something in Texas, a region with ample membership; if you would like to see an annual event, please attempt to fly out for this local meet and greet, even if its just for one day. If you are new to formation ops and interestd in getting started, this is a great opportunity to see where the program is heading (should be plenty of empty seats for an observation flight if desired) We will: - Have a discussion group/plans session on dates and locations for a proposed annual event - Conduct a formation ground school and overview of the new formation manual tools - Conduct form flight training, rec rides and evals as required - Have fun, meet who's who in this area... Date, Location and Registration: The event is listed on the Fly-In page at www.flyredstar.org as the SC/texas fly-in, please register online, its free, and insures we have an accurate head count and contact info... Fly-ins are the best fun you can have as a warbid owner, if you live in this area, drop by and be counted in support of this annual event concept... Drew Drew A. Unfortunately, they aren't screwed onto the wheel. They're riveted to the wheel. Approximately 10 mm of the metal around the inside diameter hole is used to hold the felt grease seal in place. Removing the disc/cover exposes the felt seal requiring a smaller disc to be fabricated to fit around the felt seal and bearing. Without that cover the wheel will sling grease and more importantly the front bearing is exposed to grit and dirt. Hmmm, riveted on the Yak maybe but the CJ wheel is interchangeable and uses the Chinese version of the Parker-Kaylon threaded rivet that is driven in. I can make wheel covers without too much trouble, even polished "moon discs". The reason why so many wheels are absent covers (on CJ's) are because the brakes overheat easy in hot weather and run cooler with some airflow. Taxiing into the hanger door due to brake fade at the end of a long taxi with a strong tailwind is a story too oft told. Craig Payne cpayne@joimail.com

My thoughts were on the same lines. I like the cooling and, I like the look better for some odd reason. I was thinking something just big enough to keep the felt seals inand that is it. 4.250 O.D X 2.750 I.D. Then drill & tap the holes. It would be easier just to lay an old one on some sheet and mark it up. Then start cutting. Is there a CJ spare out there??? BTW: one of the wheels is off of a CJ it has the Chinese writing on it. Any thoughts? > [b] -------- You built and fly an RV.......BIG DEAL!!!! Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=110528#110528

    From: "David McGirt" <david@mcgirt.net>
David "Talon" McGirt Yak 52 TW -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Herb Coussons Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2007 9:27 AM Subject: Yak-List: MTW / OSH 2007 RED STAR PILOTS !!! Stay tuned.
