Gang,
My ego has written a check my sorry butt can't cash. I am supposed to
relocate a Yak 55 from Fla. to Ala. in a couple weeks and don't know much
about them. Flown Yak 12, 50 & 52. 190 liters/50 gallons gas sound right?
Oil capacity? Start procedure standard Yak 50/52 or something else? I see a
switch placarded "Ignition" on the left side of panel, I understand this is
a manual air valve/switch and activates the "shower of sparks"? It is a 1992
model, so still start with mags off? For that matter how can one visually
identify the "switch off to start" mags vs the "switch on to start" Mags?
Any other educational tid bits would be very welcome. Thanx!!

Hi Mark,
first of all I would like to thank you very
much for all your valuable contributions
on this list.
Thanks to you my hangar neighbor up
here in Western Canada (won't the rain
ever stop) gets his electrical problems
solved and doesn't get rid of his Yak 52.
Since last week his PTT button on his
original radio doesn't work any longer.
All the wiring seems to be fine and the
switches are working.
I could be wrong but I remember that you
mentioned that problem once and you suggested
to have have the transistor in the radio replaced
what pulls the PTT to ground.
Your opinion and help is always much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I listed and sold a helmet (hgu 33) on ebay.
The buyer is in Hong Kong. I am a bit leery of sending it to Hong Kong
for
concern of any International potential military item laws which I am
unaware
of.
Is anyone familiar with sending items like a basic helmet overseas?

Dean,
I can't tell you a lot about the 55, but I can tell you about the magnetos.
The non-centrifugal advance mags found on most of the 52's with M14P's are
labeled M9F. The "F" looks like a Greek Theta. The centrifugal advance
mags found on the M14PF - 400HP engines are labeled "M9-35". The -35 mags
are started with the mag switch on "1+2". Identify them by the
identification tag on the cover plate just above the P lead connector.

Subject: | Re: Yak 55 info needed |
Hi Dean,
My procedure for the 55 is as follows:
1) Intake drains (if present) OPEN, Mags OFF, Battery OFF, Ignition
(="shower of sparks") OFF (That is the small switch on the panel lower
left, under the mags and starter button)
2) Pull prop through 12 blades
3) Prime about 4-6 shots depending on temp (warmer = less)
4) Pull prop through 12 blades
5) Intakes Drains (if present) OPEN, drain, then CLOSED
6) Prime 3-5 shots
7) Cycle throttle 3-4 times, set to about 25%
8) Battery ON
9) Ignition ON
10) Hit START button, as prop moves, Mags to ON
11) Adjust throttle to about 28-35% rpm, check oil pressure, Generator
(and all other switches on R-hand panel) ON
Works like a charm. The "shower of sparks" has TWO switches: one is the
"Ignition" switch and the other is a microswitch on the manual start
valve (behind the panel on the far left). Both must be closed for the
shower of sparks to operate.
Hope this helps.

I'm not so sure of the rules, but Hong Kong is fairly liberal with these sort of
issues. As long as it's not a weapon you're usually okay.
For another option, you should check if the individual works for either Cathay
Pacific or Dragonair. If so they might be willing to have the helmet sent to
one of their downroute destinations where the import/export rules won't be as
much of a problem. I work for Cathay and this is a common practice amongst the
crews.

Impressive to say the least, used to be no one wanted to be in a knife fight
in the phone booth with the Viper. Well new a bird is in town. That bird
loops with in its' own airframe length with the capability of pedal turns to
the right and left. So just sit and orbit on your axis while the bad guys
try to get an entry. Seems the enginers threw out the speed is life theory,
but not really! Not when you can accelerate from 50 knots doing the pedal
turn thing to supersonic in the length an airport!
We need more of them not less!

While most folks were long gone from Sun n Fun by Sunday, they missed Sunday/Monday
performances by the Aerostars, a 3-ship Yak 52TW team based in Northern IL.
Good performances with some original moves. It seemed a little strange to hear
only the deep rumble of the engines rather than screech of prop tips going
sonic. I was used to lots of prop noise from the T-6's of AeroShell and 450 stearmans
of the Red Barons so it was an interesting contrast. BTW, the 52TW makes
a fine plane to watch as a spectator. Not too small, good looking in the air,
just about the right speed to keep the performance in close to the crowd.

Go to a Russian airshow! The Raptor is a nice bird but the Russians can do stuff
with their jets that is equally if not more amazing. Now, put them in a fight
and thats when it would get interesting.

Honkong is very Liberal, but the USA are not.
To the best of my knowledge, a fight helmet is listed as a weapon in 21CFR
(not sure of the number) simply because it is a "military helmet with
communication equipment".
Had to jump through many hoops to get my helmet from Gibson & Barnes because
of this.

Thanks for you kind remarks Elmar. I was not the one who mentioned
exactly what transistor might be bad. In fact, I could probably figure
that one out with some time and study of the Russian Schematics, but I
do not have it off the top of my head. What you might do right now is
to find out whether there is a VOLTAGE on the PTT switches in the
cockpit. The RADIO supplies a voltage that goes out to the PTT
switches. The PTT switch itself pulls that voltage to ground when you
close the switch. This is what causes the radio to transmit. If you
read the wires going to the switch with the radio turned on, you should
have GROUND on one wire, and a voltage on the other. If that voltage IS
THERE, then something other than the transistor that you mention is bad.

Hi Mark,
first of all I would like to thank you very much for all your valuable
contributions on this list.
Thanks to you my hangar neighbor up
here in Western Canada (won't the rain

his Yak 52.
Since last week his PTT button on his
original radio doesn't work any longer.
All the wiring seems to be fine and the
switches are working.
I could be wrong but I remember that you mentioned that problem once and
you suggested to have have the transistor in the radio replaced what
pulls the PTT to ground.
Your opinion and help is always much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I've been looking through the Yak 52 schematics and found the VHF PTT switch
applies a ground to relay P116 in the Sound Warning Box. In other words,
when you press the PTT switch you should hear the relay click on in the
Sound Warning box, which is at your right elbow in the front cockpit. P116
contacts which are closed by pressing the VHF PTT switch, go to the Intercom
Amplifier (SPU).

Yeah, what he said. Never trust what someone tells you who doesn't own
one. I don't own a YAK-52. I do own a YAK-50 which of course does not
have an intercom or a Balken -5 radio! You can however open the
canopy and yell at anyone you want to.
That said, you have a good line of troubleshooting to start with, thanks
to Dennis. If you do not hear the click that Dennis is talking about,
once again... Go to the PTT switch and check for voltage on one wire and
a ground on the other. If there is no voltage, it is likely that the
P116 relay coil is bad. If there is voltage and there is a "click" ask
Dennis to look up what in the SPU ends up sending the ground over to the
radio's actual PTT line. My guess is that the wire goes straight
through the SPU to the Balken -5 R/T itself.
Another point of fact... Even if you hear the relay CLICK in the Sound
Warning Box that Dennis mentions, that does not mean it is good. On
every relay I have seen that has failed in a Russian product, the relay
coil itself worked just fine (meaning that it made the CLICK noise).
What failed were the relay contacts themselves. What this would then
mean is that you would have to open up the Sound Warning Box, locate the
relay that clicks, then figure out the wiring arrangement on the relay
based on the diagram that is printed on the relay. Note: The Russian
28 volt relays are easily replaced by American made versions.

Subject: | Re: Yak 55 info needed |
And being a relatively new 55 owner, my one tidbit to tell you is that if the engine
doesn't start in 1 or 2 blades, stop what you are doing. It either needs
more prime or more blades.
I also throw 1 shot of prime into system while priming the cylinders
I tell you the first tidbit because I emptied my air tank the first two times
I tried to fly and had to get a refill in order to start. It should take you
only about 250 psi to start, unless you aren't quick enough getting the mags
flipped on and advancing the throttle and adding prime as necessary to start it.
So, basically practice your 1 armed paper hanger skills!

Scott Poehlmann <scott-p@texas.net> wrote:
Hi Dean,
