Subject: | All Red Star VI Image Update |
Long time lurker, first time poster...please be gentle!!
For those of you who don't know me, I've been fascinated with Eastern
Bloc aircraft for a few years now thanks to the Selbys. Because of the
"Jim's", I've been introduced and welcomed by most of the Yak and
Nanchang owners around the Western half of the U.S. and have had the
fortune of flying with and photographing many of you.
Once again, Barry Hancock and the gang allowed me free reign at All Red
Star VI last month in Porterville, CA. Batman, Blitz, Ray O'Neal,
George Wilen, Doc Sugden and Cujo allowed me to fly with them to better
archive the event and I'm happy to say a full blown book is has become
the result. Featuring 120 images on 80 pages, the book is an oversized
11x13 hardbound format with full color photography along with its own
dust jacket. I'll be the first to admit the book is a bit pricey, but
it was the only solution available without going through a publisher
with a minimum 500 copy print run. After speaking to numerous
professional photographers, this site was chosen unanimously for its
quality.
Preview:
http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/58151
Hopefully I'm not stealing RPA's thunder (Sorry Potus, Phil!), but for a
larger preview of images from ARS VI as well as some featured in the
book, you can also look here:
http://www.tvrphotography.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=180
Also, congrats to Arnie Evdokimo in his L-39ZA. His aircraft above the
clouds at ARS VI will be featured as the cover shot for EAA's Warbird
Magazine while the four-ship lead by B-Dog will be on the back cover.
Meanwhile, talks are continuing with Air & Space Smithsonian Magazine to
feature additional images from ARS VI in their two-page Sightings section.
Many thanks for allowing me to work with you all and learn more about
the Yak n' Chang community. If you have any questions about the book,
please don't hesitate to ask. I've already ordered a copy which takes
about two weeks for delivery and can confirm or bash the
quality...though I'm optimistic! It was great working with you all and
I hope to come back again next year!
Kind regards,
Tyson V. Rininger

Tyson,
Thanks for the post. Your photos are "Grade A", "Prime", and "Choice" and
RPA approved. You deserve all the recognition you get. Now come to the East
Coast!
Please save some choice shots for Red Alert!
Phil "Shortbus" Cogan
You'll be seeing Tyson's work on the cover of the Summer 07 issue of Red
Alert.

Nice shots Tyson!!! I will even admit those T-34 interloper shots were pretty cool!
What I am disappointed about is that with more than a couple of -50's there,
no form shots? No shots! What gives guys?
Nice work...as always!

I think the airplane is kind of ugly. Plus, another M-14 gone from the hands of
a Yak owner. I guess we have to learn to accept the fact that our engine rocks
and everyone want one.

I've noticed that the rubber in many of my engine mounts is getting pretty
ratty, so I'm up for changing it out.
Anybody have any experiencing doing this? We thought we'd just get a strap
and lift the engine a bit and replace the ones we can get to easily, but I
have that sneaking suspicion I get right before things don't go so well.

Besides lifting the engine slightly to relieve the weight from the engine
mount rubbers, I'd suggest removing the generator and the magnetos. It will
make the job significantly easier. Before you remove the mags, remove any
grease or oil around the base of the mag where it mates with the accessory
case. Then using a Sharpie pen make 3 vertical marks between the base of
the magneto and the case about 1/4" to 3/8" apart. The marks will enable
you to reinstall the magnetos in precisely the same location and not have to
retime the magnetos. Replace one rubber mount at a time. The attached
document should help with how tight the plates, nuts and washers should be.

of them in the region.

I helped with the condition inspection on a T-28 today and I see only a slight
similarity. Wings, wheels, prop, radial, tail.....
Yeah, for 200K, I would rather have a real -28 too!
I don't see much of a market for that thing..but we will see.

There are a few differences... 50gph to cruise in an old T-28 versus less than
half that (or less?) in the new Bear. Probably handles a little different doing
aerobatics too. Cool looking airplane but I don't see how it flies with those
tiny wings.

Sure it does, in flight. I know the t28 is a tricycle and a monster
- I have about 10 hours in them. Great ego trip to fire it off
sitting 10+ feet off the ground.
But the canopy, fuselage shape, square tail, side exhaust over the
wing, radial, etc - very similar profile - with the gear up.

If it is a "knock off" of anything it is the F8F Grumman Bearcat.

Hey guys,
You might look at the fact that when a new aircraft design comes out, it uses
the positive attributes of several different aircraft, be it in form or
function.
You can see the DNA of Bearcat, T28, Yak, A26, Tigercat, Aspect Ratio
characteristics of some V-engine fighters, etc., all through this airplane...

Subject: | A fix for the Yak-50 primary bottle..... |
Since I have neither the time or money to go the Bones route, this is what I came
up with. A new Yak-52 bottle and mount mounted on a new structure just forward
of where the batteries were once located. Batteries were also relocated next
to bottle opening up a great deal of space for new cargo space. New W&B as
well. Existing plumbing was used for the most part. Less than 24 inches of new
plumbing was used. (Thanks to Luke P for saving my ass with parts)The workmanship
is fantastic and as solid as the rest of the airplane. The cargo space is
quite large and is removable if the need arises.
I simply could not find another Yak-50 bottle so this was what I had to go with.
That -52 bottle may someday be replaced with a cylinder type bottle. I am very
happy with the set up and it has more capacity than the original -50 bottle.
