As a back seat photographer in numerous Nanchangs and Yaks, I might be able to give a little insight about flying with the canopy open. Although I don't know related Vne speeds or the canopy's maximum speed before departure, I can say that if you notice the rear canopy open, close the front canopy immediately. So long as the front canopy is closed, wind buffeting and pressure is quite minimal and unless the canopy has major existing problems, it's unlikely to depart the aircraft. However, I have noticed that as soon as the front canopy is opened to even the first notch (Nanchang), buffeting in the rear begins to occur. With some flights at normal cruise speed, I've had to partially close the rear canopy to reduce the pressure and 'bypass' air coming into the rear until the front canopy has been completely closed. As far as the effects on aircraft speed, I've flown along in just about every formation position with the rear canopy open and the aircraft (and pilots) seem to perform quite well. (This is where I'm a bit out of my jurisdiction since I'm not a pilot...but I have debriefed!) And on that note, I really do have to commend the design of the Yaks n' Changs when it comes to flying with the rear canopy open. Of all the aircraft I've flown in, this design is the most comfortable and the most stable to be a passenger in along with the ease of operating the canopy numerous times during a single flight. Hope that provides some helpful insight from a somewhat versatile passenger point of view. Cheers, Tyson

Hi, A number of years ago I was flying my CJ with both canopies open with a GIB. We did several loops. Coming out of the bottom of the last one, the rear canopy "departed" the aircraft. Lots of wind, noise and one very surprised passenger. But fortunately no damage. The exit speed is around 260 - 265 KPH. My puke screen had been removed which may have prevented the canopy loss had it been installed. I would not recommend flying with both canopies open at any speed above 250 KPH based on this experience.
