One of the perks of being a corporate pilot is that once in a while you end up at the right place at the right time. This year was exactly that. I just spent the at the Paris Airshow in Le Bourget. And thanks to a good friend of mine who connected me to the right people, we (my co-captain and I) were guest in one of the many Corporate lodge and were treated to a very nice lunch might I ad. But back to real stuff... Having spent all morning running away from one TRW+ after another, we feared the show would be cancelled. But immediately after our extended lunch it began. First up was the new French Tiger helicopter. Now here is something I had never seen; This thing hovers at about 500' then rolls to the inverted and pulls a split S.... Then he went on to do a bunch of rolls, but no loop. The last manoeuver was something else; again he hovers, then the tail drops to the vertical, slides around 1/2 a fuselage length and recover with 3/4 of the loop. WOW. Then came a slew of the high speed stuff. The Rafale (French fighter) was impressive (I guess there is only 2 positions on the throttle; Idle or after burner. He did the complete show in afterburner... Going to idle only in the last manoeuver, a reverse cuban, where he dropped the gear and landed from the vertical...), the Eurofighter also, the F16 lived up to its expectation and so did the Tornado. But the one I really wanted to see was the last one of the day. The Mig 29. Finally I was going to see the cobra manoeuver. The Mig took off, did a bunch of usual manoeuvers, did the tail slide (twice) and as he was leaving show center to reposition he had a fart. The LH engine threw a flame about 20ft out of the tail pipe. The pilot simply dropped the gear and landed :-( I guess I'll have to wait again. You should have seen the Russian mechanics, they were all looking for a rock to hide under. That pretty much it from the French front, Cheers, Dan Fortin ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 02:20:19 PM PST US From: Doug Sapp Subject: Re: Yak-List: Yak-18 Jim, Time to say yes or no on the CJ5/Yak18 engines, Last chance to make the truck is Monday (in China), which is our Sunday.
