Hello, -A spark plug tool (in case of hydro lock) -A small air bottle. A medical oxygen bottle (with air inside, no oxygen of course!) is enough and can be fitted easily in the cockpit. -A multitool in my pocket. That's what I use during ferry flights in Eastern Europe. I recently did the automotive plugs and wires conversion kit on this airplane. Paint appeared to be original and in fair shape. Canopy glass was OK. Engine was quite dry. It's a basic Yak 55 and that's about all I know about it. Would > everyone agree? The bag of worms is opened! ;) Carl Hays has a lot of experience with these engines and I respect his opinion. The other side of this is there is AT LEAST 3 known engine failures after prop strikes. Yes, wood and composite is softer than metal, but just how soft is a baseball bat swung at full speed, or water at 70 mph, or air at 200 mph? Point here is just because wood core props are "softer" doesn't mean that they are not strong enough to cause internal damage during a sudden stoppage. Here is a related example. We now have a customer with a Lancair IV- P that had a history two nose gear collapses. After the first one they tore the engine apart only to find that everything was A- OK.....a "waste of money" right? Well....we get called in on the job after the second prop strike and the owner tells me "we tore it down after the first one and there was nothing wrong....I was at idle, so I'm sure it's OK...just throw another prop on it and I'll go fly it." Well, he doesn't have a wife or kids, but I still insisted that we at least do a run out on the crank. Sure enough, it didn't meet spec. We sent the engine to Firewall Forward (who turned the engine in 5 working days) and both the crank and case were bad. Had he "just put another prop on it" and went flying, his engine definitely would have failed.... (As an aside, the plane was being used in an upcoming movie called FAST GLASS....we flew in it and maintained all 8 of the airplanes...it was a kick!) Incidentally, the nose gear collapses were a result of improper hardware and improper installation by previous "mechanics" ...a story unto itself. I will never figure out why so many of us pilots put out pocket books before our lives. If there was even a 1 in 100 chance that you were going to have an engine failure, what do you think your significant other or your kids would tell you to do? See you at OSH, Barry

I could not agree more with Jerry Painter. I have been dealing with Yaks and with Eastern Europe for longer than most - almost twenty years now, and the simple fact is that the Western Yak community has been living in a "dream-world" of incredibly cheap aircraft and spare parts. It has of course been great while it has lasted, but I have seen, over the last few years, that stocks of spare parts in factories and airfields throughout the region are literally drying up. This is made worse by recent customs regulations in Russia, which make it almost impossible to export anything that is remotely aviation in origin even if the parts were available. Certainly, Western ingenuity will, manufacture some spare parts, but typically those that are simple. Anything that is more complex, cannot be made without the appropriate jigs and tooling, and of course Aerostar have these. I would emphasise I have no financial interest in Aerostar apart from a strong desire that they continue in business - because if they do not an awful lot of Yaks will eventually be grounded! In passing, considering pricing issues, remember that Aerostar in Romania, is now part of the European Euro. Those of you who do not follow international currencies might not realise that the US Dollar has totally collapsed. Three and a half years ago it was trading at 95US cents to the Euro. Today it is pushing US$1.37cents to the Euro. Forgetting all inflationary issues, that makes an aircraft priced in Euro, which might have cost US$160,000 three and a half years ago US$231,000 today! Me too - for many years. A long time ago repaired a bust alternator in the middle of nowhere using swiss army knife, girlfriends hairclip and wire I borrowed from a speaker. Now I keep a leatherman in my car and a swiss army tool on my bike - even less space than Yak. Been invaluable a number of times, never for the bike though! -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of A. Anyone on the list associated with a Metal Spinning shop? Yes, it is Yak-related. I'm looking for someone to spin some prototype aluminum "parts" from drawings. There is always the chance that this list may come up with a lead. Reply off-list please. Craig Payne cpayne@joimail.com

Whilst adapting my gust lock design for the Yak, I have noticed that some -52's have wingtips while others don't seem to need "no stinking wingtips". Is there any rhyme or reason or was it left to the whims of the Comrade-In-Charge that built these Beasts? Craig Payne cpayne@joimail.com

They are after-market add ons. The factory original pre peristroka (sp) YAK does not have wingtips. They are on the 52W's. Hi Craig, I sent you a response to your wingtips question off line..direct to your published email address. I got an auto response saying that I "wasn't on your list" rejecting my response to your question. I just deal with my spam as it comes...am not real fond of those shotgun auto responders. Not exactly aftermarket - they were added on the W and TW by Aerostar. On Jul 13, 2007, at 9:39 PM, Roger Kemp wrote: > They are after-market add ons. Subject: pre-ignition angle on the Huosai-6A
Gentlemen, venerable Walt Lannon, since some of us are using 100LL on our CJ engines and not the by the manufactor recommended 70 octane spirit, our combustion seems to be more abrupt. So I gathered my remaining and from libations abused grey cells and adjusted my 24 degrees stamped magnetos on a pre-ignition angle of 9.5 degrees, that totals my pre- angle to 33.5 instead of 31 degrees. The outcoming was amazing (and I was not leaning towards some red wine). The engine runs smoother, less fuel consumption, less vibrations, better throttle response and my wife (the pilot) is much happier. If you see any flaw in this theorie, please share your thoughts. It might prevent an engine failure and save some lifes on day. Thank you in advance. cheers Elmar (C-FTKL)
