There are two sides to this story. The first is the uniformed FAA inspector that oversteps his bounds because, as Dennis says, they either don't understand the regs themselves (ever say "Part 43" to an inspector and watch the reaction? Think deer in headlights....), or has some personal agenda, or both. The second is the "consumer" who lets the FAA go unchecked. Day VFR limitations for an airplane that is both equipped and capable of night/IFR is both wholly unacceptable using the regs as your guideline, and allows others to have to go through the same battle because a precedent has been set. This is how the ball rolls down hill and screws things up for everyone. It took YEARS of work and pro bono attorney time to overturn the onerous limitations being set by a local FSDO on experimental exhibition aircraft. Guess what? The precedent was set by a FSDO 800 miles away. Don't think for a moment that just because each FSDO is different that they don't use precedents set by others to justify their inappropriate interpretations. It is up to each of us in the warbird community to band together, know the regs, and stand firm against ANYTHING that limits our ability to operate our aircraft in a safe and reasonable manner. Your actions (or lack thereof) with your local FSDO effect EVERYONE in the warbird community. Guys, have you ever tried to remove the tanks from the aircraft? There is a limit on tank size due to the geometry of getting the tanks in and out. There is a TON more room in there for more fuel, but no practical way to take advantage of the size without MAJOR modifications. On a separate note, we are just a few weeks away from completing our fuel tank modification for the CJ-6. It will net 30 gallons per side, is aluminum, will require only minor reinforcement to existing structure, NO modification to the vent system, is designed by DoD contracted and former Boeing engineers, will be less $$$ per gallon than any other system available, and take less than a week to install. Will have final pricing and pictures available shortly....
