From: "Bitterlich, Mark G CIV Det Cherry Point, MALS-14 64E" <mark.bitterlich@navy.mil>
I'd like to hear the details on the fire Jan. I would suspect it happened once the engine starting cranking. It would be very easy under such circumstances for the gas to light off in the cylinder and then come out of the exhaust on fire and create quite a mess in the process. Mark -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Jan Mevis Sent: Monday, August 06, 2007 2:30 Subject: RE: Yak-List: Yak 50 priming drip Of course you're right, Mark. Nevertheless, I started a fire once, after priming too much. I still don't know how or why, since the engine was not hot. I did not have any (known) leaks. Since then, I always try to have someone in the nearby. I have primed the snot out of my 50 and have NEVER had fuel leak out of the bottom of the engine. Out of the exhaust ... Sure... Especially when priming and then pulling the prop through. I've had it come out of the intake drain lines especially with the drain kit installed and the valve open. I have even had it come out of a CRACK in one of the INTAKE TUBES (hint hint). I disagree that it is normal under any condition. Take a look at how this system works. It would have to get down, back out the blower, and then down to the carb to come out. Be careful when priming. You may start a fire. I have already started a fire once. I was very lucky to have friends with fire extinguishers in the neighborhood. No damage thanks to their rapid intervention! The fire I started, was entirely my own fault, being unexperienced with the Yak. IMHO, when the engine does not start easily, there's some problem. For best practices, try to have someone with a fire extinguisher in the neighborhood when starting. Of course, this is not always possible. Yes, it was something like that. I remember the engine "coughing" one or two times and then nothing. At that time, I had a bad, lazy starting-valve. The shower-of-sparks at the contrary worked very well. So it is probable that one cylinder fired, and with spilled fuel in the exhaust, it probably gave a flame large enough to ignite oily stuff on the bottom of the cowling. Since then, I not only try to have someone nearby when starting, but I also keep the engine compartment clean. I'm looking for a Tail Wheel Hub for a Yak 50 or an early model Wilga 35. I have 1969 Wilga 35 and it appears to use the same tail wheel as the Yak. I went to put on a new tire and discovered that the old hub had been epoxied together. Any help would be great!! Also this is my first post so I hope it works. Thanks Marc Granger 713-649-0001

    Subject: Enough
Gentlemen: Enough about this subject already. Beware, any member who may have expressed anything, be prepared to hear from all sides. My situation has nothing to do with the rely from Mr. Miller at GCA. My plea was simply to get GCA to meet their contractual obligations to install avionics that actually work. I had attempted for almost a year to get them to simply reply to the FACT that there are some problems with their avionics installation that needs attention. No response to multiple e-mails, letters, and telephone calls. Have spoken to several AOPA attorneys and they all said that this is a simple BREACH OF CONTRACT. Cliff was totally correct to question my statements. I have sent him several thank you notes, and a complete file on this situation. GCA has to this date refused to contact me to schedule a repair date on their installation. THAT IS ALL THAT I HAVE EVER ASKED FROM GCA! Mr. Miller did respond to you about the two subjects that absolutely nothing to do with the avionics problems. If he has time for this, why can't he call me to set up an appointment. He also was sent the complete file. His only response was that the Aerostar factory did not install a hose from the hydrolytic reservoir to the Cleveland brakes that were not strong enough to resist the left foot of his technician from pulling it off of the fitting. And that from April to July was not four months. This has nothing to do with nothing. It was their attitude that it was my responsibility to pay for the repair. About a week after I picked up the plane in Lakeland, I flew her to Alabama for one on Dennis' outstanding annuals. On the trip, ATC said "garbled and unreadable, and not receiving your transponder". Hey wait a minute, these are all new units. One of Dennis' friends was kind enough to look at the avionics, and he said that as soon as you return, contact GCA about the installation. I did this, as the many letters, calls, and e-mails will show. THEY REFUSED TO LIVE UP TO THE WARRANTY THAT IS STATED IN OUR CONTRACT, AND HAVE NEVER RESPONDED TO ANY REQUESTS. Yes, I must be just another stupid SOB that would expect that paying $17,522.52 would expect them to stand by their work. To stop all of this crap, I am taking her to another avionics shop and will pay for any corrections necessary for safety and function. Ray Gage http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

Folks, Please forward this information to anyone who has downloaded the CJ W&B spreadsheet from the RedStar website. The spreadsheet is incorrect for the weight of oil. I have sent an updated version to Deon to replace on the website, but please forward this information to anyone who may have an older version. The new version also has an initial W&B calculation section for those folks that are modifying their aircraft. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts for the spreadsheet version 2C, please let me know. I've attached a version here for information. Dabear
