Good afternoon,
I wanted to take a minute and introduce myself. My name is John Graham from Algonquin,
IL and I just bought Steve Knight's 1993 Yak-52 N15YK (formerly based
in Minnesota - white with red stars dotting the cowling). I am a 200 hour private
pilot with a tail wheel endorsement (former J-3 Cub owner) and am just about
checked out in the Yak. I look forward to getting to know this group better
during the coming years. My contact information should attach to this email....but
to be safe, my email is CubFlyer1940@Yahoo.com.

Hi...John Graham here with my first Yak "opportunity to learn"! During the pre-buy
inspection of N15YK, there was about 25/1000's play (maybe a bit more) in
the push-pull rode behind the aft seat in the nut just before the Y-fork that
went into the attachment for the elevator cables. That's as close as I can get
to describing it. You can feel the play in the stick when pushing or pulling
it fore or aft - it moves slightly before engaging the elevator. No one thinks
this is normal - is it? The A&P/IA (Lynn Hadler from Motive Services at
Lake in the Hills airport 3CK - where N15YK is based) called Jill (not sure who
she is yet!) but she stated she had not heard of this. So, my questions are:
1. Is this normal?
2. If not, is it a case of adjusting the nut/bolt behind the aft seat or is it
something more involved?
Greatly appreciate any help.

John,
It is not normal and SHOULD have been identified during the annual or pre
purchase inspection. Luckily it is not a major issue and can be adjusted
out. There is a large nut/sleeve/collar on the tube going back to the
elevator bellcrank in the rear cockpit under the seat. There should be a
set screw on the underside of the nut/sleeve. Loosen the set screw and take
the slop out by turning the nut on the sleeve. Once you've removed the
slop, tighten the set screw.

Welcome John, we need more in the upper midwest. How far are you
from Green Bay? We have an excellent yak AP north of us. He used to
work at Pride, now on his own and a Yak owner.

Welcome indeed, John! Now it's time to assure that you're properly attired and patched. Go immediately to the RPA Online Store (www.flyredstar.org) and I will make sure you're equipped prmptly. ...Blitz -- your erstwhile store manager. Also, don't be caught short without an RPA Challenge Coin. It'll get expensive at the bar without one.

Subject: | Yak 55 smoke system |
Does anyone have a smoke system in a Yak 55? I have the
Smokingplanes system in the Yak 52. Mounted in the rear deck. I do
not like the location's effect on the CG especially with a back
seater. Although I did inverted spins and tumbles with the tank half
full and a 160 lb GIB with no effect on recovery. Its a little
inconvenient to fill also and it would be nice to have more
capacity. I have had good luck, good performance, and no maint
problems out of the system. Just wondering about alternatives for
the 55 - even if people have used the Smokingplanes system - I would
like to know how and where they have mounted.
Thanks,
Herb
