My first impression the focal length of my eyes is such that I cannot find a happy medium. Either the horizon or the tape is way out of focus. By putting a sighting device on the wing farther out it is easier to "look through" the device and see the horizon. Or look at the device and see the horizon in the distance. Maybe I just need to admit I need bifocals :( Herb In Reply to Kirill I am not currently building anything. I have some photos of some that I could forward if you like. I was just using this in a Pitts for some aerobatic refresher training. (I haven't flown much acro for about 5 years and felt it would be a good idea to have a good instructor help me knock the rust off.) I know what you are saying in that, the tendency is to focus your eye on the horizon which makes the tape go out of focus. I found that I adapted very quickly and using it to determine pitch angle relative to the horizon was not a problem. OTOH, something no one has mentioned but is probably significant is setting a lateral sight-point on the horizon. If you have a sighting device out on the wing tip it will help you identify yaw when horizontal or roll when vertical. > Maybe I just need to admit I need bifocals :( (Sorry, bifocals won't help because the tape and the horizon are in the same plane.) -- Brian Lloyd 3191 Western Drive brian HYPHEN 1927 AT lloyd DOT com Cameron Park, CA 95682 +1.916.367.2131 (voice) +1.270.912.0788 (fax) I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things . . . Even with multifocal lenses, you can only focus at one distance at a time. Putting the sighting device on the wing tip moves it far enough that the eye considers it at infinity. Then the eye can focus on the sighting device and the horizon at the same time. eb (ophthalmologist) Herb Coussons wrote: > > Maybe I just need to admit I need bifocals :( > ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 10:47:53 AM PST US From: Herb Coussons Subject: Yak-List: Yak 55 Article I found this article by accident looking through some old IAC magazines. I would also put a small streamer on the design for tailslides, torque rolls, and any other maneuvers that are in reverse. I also included an article that I found by accident comparing the 55 to a Sukhoi. I had searched for info on 55s and never found this one. I had seen the review by Allan Cassidy before. The page also has some old videos - 3 years old. I have some new video of inverted spins and tumbles in the 52. I'll try to post in the next few weeks. http://web.mac.com/hscuzz/iWeb/Yak%20Videos/Yak55.html Herb ________________________________ Message 11 ____________________________________ Time: 05:58:13 PM PST US From: Walt Murphy Subject: Yak-List: YAK 55 Can anyone tell me what the max speed is for flying a 55 with the canopy open?
