    Subject: CJ-6 Artificial Horizon Problem
Hi all...just looking for some advice on the following problem.... One of our stock standard Nanchangs has a problem whereby after powering up the electrics, both front and rear cockpit AH's do a slow tumble and end up stable but out of alignment - typically 20 degrees of bank and 10 degrees nose down. They each seem to tumble the same amount each time, although the front tumbles a different amount to the rear. When power is removed they tend to return to the straight and level indication. None of the books I have seem to have anything about these units (or the system) in them so I was hoping some bright spark out there would be able to point me in the right direction. I should add that on receiving the aircraft from China we removed all the old radio, ADF etc and associated wiring. For the first few hours the AH's seemed to function perfectly so I do not think this is a problem we have induced...(hopefully) Perhaps there is a fuse or something simple? Best regards, Jay McIntyre New Zealand

Could be an inverter problem as the AH's are powered by 36 Volts AC, 400 HZ. The inverter may have lost one of the phases. If you have a friend who has a CJ, swap out one of the AH's, putting one of your AH in his airplane. If it syncs up, then go back to the inverter. I concur. You've lost a leg to the AI's. Quick and easy way to diagnose this problem- Check continuity on each wire from the AI to the inverter Then, run the inverter and check for 36VAC across the inverter output wires (all three). If you don't have continuity on the wiring, check the solder joints inside the connectors- they like to break. Also, in some the Yaks (and maybe CJ's too) there is an inline fuse from the inverter to the AI. It may have blown or become ..."crusty". Cheers, Cliff A. Since there two inverters involved, one front behind the pilots seat on the left side for the front AH and one in the rear on the rear rack for the rear AH and both AHs' have a problem it appears that it is time to pull the inverters clean and lube etc. Listen to the inverters in this aircraft and the ones in another aircraft, I am willing to bet the ones in this aircraft sound slow.
