A Russian mechanic, Andrei Glukhov, told me recently that when the wings
fold due to excessive G's, the fuselage and thus the cockpit also get
crumped up.
Andrei told me that there have been cases where the pilot could not get out
anymore. Probably because the canopy could not be opened again. Perhaps a
good idea to have something at hand to break it?
I saw pictures of UK registered Yak 50's with a small axe fixed in the
cockpit (is that correct, Richard ?).
You should assume that your YK50 has been flown to and above the limits
(unless perhaps the very few last 50's that have been made).
In my logbooks, I can see that a.o. Egorov and Timofejev flew a lot with my
plane. Since both were outstanding aerobatics pilots, I accept that my plane
was "tortured". My plane was "put away" after about 120 hours total time
flying by the Russians in 1981, 1982 (only 9 hours) and 1983 (only 4 hours
!). According to the logbooks (it's a good idea to have it de-cyphered !!)
the overhaul in 2001 was very extensive. The spar mods were done.

Almost time to go to work. Flying the B-24 can be so tiring. Oh hum!
Had a beautiful day yesterday at EKY. CAVU with cool temps and a very nice
size after church crowd that showed up.
Also nice was the proliferate of Yaks that showed up. No less than four.
Doc, Dennis, Harcord, and one other fellow brought by their Y-50s and 52s. We
had a nice short visit and I showed off the B-24 cockpit.
Buddy Boman show up too flying a spam can, but with a P-47 vet in tow. What
a character he turned out to be!
Well got to go work. I'm flying the last week of the tour. From here we
fly to Columbus Ga., Moultrie. Ga. and than our final stop at St. Augustine.
>From there we take them to the maintenance base American Aero at EVB. That
will be on the 4th. Than we're done until mid January. Until than I'll be
making some mods to my CJ.

Yep Pappy, you are living the dream! Thanks for letting me crawl through
her! Have been in plenty of B-17s, 25s, PBY's, and an A-26 but this was the
first time I got to crawl through a 24. Really enjoyed it! The visibility
over the nose is as bad as the 50's or a Corsair. None!
Fly safe and will see Ya'll at Waycross,

Subject: | Drilling down for Yak-50/52 wing spar failure info |
Folks,
My interest is piqued from the recent banter over Yak-50 wing spar
issues. So my hope is to enlist the collective wisdom so as to provide
actual historical facts on Yak wing spar failures. My belief is this
information will also be relevant to Yak 52 owners as well. Especially early models
without the "Heavy spar".
Correct me if I wrong, but my understanding is that there were three
Yak 50 aircraft that were lost due to the wing spar failure. These
aircraft were all lost practicing for the World Aerobatic Competition. One
of the pilots got out, and I was told it was a female pilot.I also
believe all of these aircraft were pre-spar mod. Warning! This is a
rumor: I have been told by IMHO, by a respected Yak-50 driver, that one of
these Russian pilots admitted to pulling/pushing far more then the
+9/-6 the aircraft were designed for during this. more in the neighborhood of 14G's
positive.So with this said, I
wonder what happened to the design overshoot that was built in.
We all know that we can destroy almost any aircraft by abusing it in
the air. Also with repetitive abuse comes the issue of metal fatigue, well noted.
Nothing lasts forever, and some go sooner rather then later. The Yakovlev engineers
found this out with the Yak-50, sooner
then they thought, I suspect. Their response was legendary. My guess
was to save face for the design bureau and country, after the loss of the aerobatic
team pilots that were considered national hero's, or at least potential national
hero's. The reaction to permanently ground and destroy these aircraft,
obviously was viewed as an over reaction my many. BTW was there not a Sukhoi
wing failure as well? Was it
something about a cold lamination when the wing was made?
Personally, I have been only involved with the Yak aircraft for less
then 5 years, so needless to say, I still learning. This list is one of
the best tools there is to enhance the experience, and I can not say enough to
the people who provide
informative, useful information to this community. For the last three
years or so, I have been enjoying flying the Yak-50, which I bought from
Steve Culp. So I do have a dog in the hunt, so to speak.
So my burning question is, can someone shed actual facts on all the known Yak-50
aircraft that folded their wings? What say you? Victor,
Sergei,Vladimir,Svetlana, any people who know the true facts, please
feel free to educate me. Also I'm curious if there has been any Yak-52 aircraft
lost due to wing failure.
Thanks in advance, I value virtually all of the opinions on the list.

Thank you for a beautiful guided tour thru the the B24. A beautiful machine.
The other fellow was Tommie Hudson, who owns a Yak52.
You have made your own " luck" , when it comes to where you are in aviation.

Yes, at least one Yak-50 was made with fixed gear (and wheel covers),
but also a bubble ' canopy. I am not sure why this did not make it
into production.
However DEFINITELY not a stronger wing ' it was the success of
modifications on the original wing that did this!

I will stand by my claim of "over 5,000 ft per minute" for a light
Yak-50, with 400hp and a MTV9-260-29 prop.
By "light" I do not mean anything dramatic, but lightweight battery;
lightweight alternator; no inverter; no large horizon.

I just flew the Muskogee, OK Airshow (B25 "Martha Jean") with the Wiley Post A-26,
so they are definitely up and running. However, they are not for sale and
not an OnMark Invader anyway...
They didn't have any leads on any OnMarks for sale save Mark Clark's offering.

Subject: | Re: Introduction/burning fuel in Virginia |
Hi Cliff,
Yes, I BELIEVE you and Tim are right and it is the one with the roll bar
in it. Bud's old airplane. I was asked to ferry that aircraft to a new
buyer some years ago, and I ended up being too busy. That was after I
found out that it has some "minor issues" that needed to be addressed
but was "Ok to fly a long cross country".
Thanks for the heads up. Yes, I think we all know the history. Sadly.

Mark, Isn't that yak 50 -N 63 RA- the aircraft that has the roll bar in
it? If so , you know who owned it and had to have extensive repairs done
to it, don't you?

Thanks Tim for the heads up. Here are some interesting tidbits.
1. Flir47 never signs his own name.
2. He is a very sarcastic individual who enjoys badmouthing anyone and
everyone.
3. He got very frantic when it was suggested that a YAK-50 without spar
modifications should not pull over 5 G's and that not having this
modification lowered the worth of the aircraft. I should have tied that
kind of response to be one from the owner of such an aircraft?
4. YAK-50 77-1009 shows an incorrect "N" number on the YAK census list.
5. N number N63RA shows up at the FAA's registration site as "May not
be suitable for operation".
6. Tim, can you remember the N number of the 52 that this gent sold?
Thanks,

Mark,
I believe this is the airplane that Flir47 owns. I met the guy who
recently bought his Yak-52.
http://members.cox.net/yakpilot/n63ra.htm
Being a 1977 model, it seems to have never been modified. I think this
airplane carries some history.
As for room in the Yak-50, I am 5'11" and as far as I am concerned, it
is perfect. If I could only get the seat to recline like the one in the
jet I fly

Speaking of YAK 50,s.
I found on the NTSB web site that on Oct 06 at El Cajon Ca. a couple of
YAK 50,s bumped on landing . Number three was hit by number four in a
formation landing.
No one was hurt. The N numbers were N 509ra and N 950ms.
Looks similar to Oshkosh but with better results.
