Subject: | List of Contributors |
Each year at the end of the List Fund Raiser, I post a message acknowledging everyone
that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its sort of
my way of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation
for the Lists.
Won't you take a moment and assure that your name is on that List of Contributors
(LOC)? As a number of members have pointed out over the years, the List seems
at least - if not a whole lot more - valuable as a building/flying/recreating/entertainment
tool as your typical magazine subscription!
Please take minute and assure that your name is on this year's LOC! Show others
that you appreciate the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is
fast and easy using your Credit card or Paypal on the Secure Web Site:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
or by popping a personal check in the mail to:
Matt Dralle / Matronics

I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus
far in this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps
these Lists going and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about
how the Lists have helped you!
Best regards,

Subject: | carbon bonds (was: mogas vs 100LL) |
I hate it when something sticks in my head overnight. It means I am
not going to get a good night's sleep. (Yes, I do lose sleep over
stuff like this. Yes, I probably am crazy.)
The issue was the comment about higher grades of fuel having more
carbon-carbon bonds and therefore more energy. The Wikipedia article
I referenced, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating, also
alluded to that. OTOH I figured that if there was an appreciable
increase in C-C bonds there would be a shift in best stoichiometric
mixture when measured by mass ratio.
As a mental experiment I decided to trot out my old and rotten
chemistry memories to compare the two simplest organic compounds with
single and double carbon-carbon (c-c) bonds: ethane (C2H6) and ethene
(C2H4). Ethane has a single C-C bond and ethene has a double C=C
bond. Combusting ethene should release more energy than combusting an
equivalent mass of ethane. Here is what the two molecules look like:
Ethane:
H H
| |
H-C-C-H
| |
H H
Ethene:
H H
\ /
C=C
/ \
H H
When you have the double carbon bond you no longer have bonds for the
two extra hydrogens. This changes the combustion reaction from:
2(C2H6) + 7(O2) = 4(CO2) + 6(H2O) + energy
To:
C2H4 + 3(O2) = 2(CO2) + H2O + energy
The mass of ethane is 30gm/Mol. The mass of ethene is 28gm/Mol. The
mass of O2 is 32gm/Mol. So the oxidizer-to-fuel mass ratios for the
two reactions are:
7(32)/2(30) = 3.73 (for ethane)
3(32)/28 = 3.42 (for ethene)
This is a 9% difference in mass ratio. (I didn't include the N2 from
the atmosphere because, while it does change the individual mass
ratios, it does not effect the percentage difference at the end which
is what I was looking for.)
My gut feeling is, if "higher quality" gasoline had a lot more C=C
(double) bonds (and therefore more energy), we would have to readjust
our carburetors when we switch fuel in order to get a proper mixture.
Since we don't ...
BTW, I encourage someone to show me where I am wrong as I always am
looking to learn.

One comment. I want to replace that fuse with a circuit breaker myself,
but keep in mind that the "reaction time" of a fuse is faster than the
typical aircraft circuit breaker. Aircraft breakers can easily
withstand 150% of rated load for a few second before blowing. Fuses
react faster than that.
It's not usually anything to worry about... Just to note that there IS a
difference.

Answer:
For the fuse contact Doug Sapp. They work in the 50/52 also.
As for placing a circuit breaker... a 50 amp unit will work fine and
solves the problem of ever having to replace the fuse again.
No, I do not have a wiring diagram for the CJ. Do for a YAK 50 and 52
though.

I was having an electrical problem sunday, as in no power, and I found
the 50 amp fuse blown in the box to the right of the pilot.
1) does anyone know where to buy the subject fuse or a replacement?
2) has anyone replaced these with circuit breakers?
3) Does anyone have a readable wire diagram?
Thank you

You can unsolder the legs off the actual fuse itself, and go down to
Lowe's and search through their large bus bar type fuse collection and
find one that fits and then solder the legs back on to that, which is
what I did, and sorry, I did NOT write down the exact number off the
fuse. Sorry, my bad.
Better yet, go to Doug Sapp and buy one from him.
Best of all.. Replace it with a 50 amp breaker.
I am not sure how good Doug's bus bar fuses are, but the original
Russian ones are dog crap. They fail internally from vibration.

Mark et all,
Clearly, my recommendation to write to admin@ flyredstar is NOT to
crunch debate, but to insure that debate (those well written lengthy
positions) reaches those elected by the members (the board of directors)
or elected by those board members (the president and national officers)
who need look in to your positions by reading your arguments -
The reason for my emphasizing this is many of those folks do not read
this list. During five years with RPA I could often not hit this yak
list dailey, but tried to answer every gripe or comment that made it to
my inbox via the admin email ("I can't log in, where's my patch, how do
I renew my FAST card, where do I find an instructor, why is there no
clinics in my region..."). Patience, I know that the new president is
putting people in place to expend great effort right now on some new
website infrastructure for members and this community based on their
multi-year feedback, as well as other projects,

And the issue is protecting the wiring. Go with a fusible link.

For those that bought these birds what was the reason to return to stock, how extensive
were the mods, were they structurally sound/external only or did they
effect the integrity of the airframe, would you still use them for acro in this
configuration etc? How much extra weight and how much drag?
The thing is growing on me, minus the music notes on the side. Any one know the
significance of those?

I have had to replace only one of these fuses and that was due to my own
#^&*^up. That was 13 years ago and I had a good stock of 12V T6/Harvard
spares which included the virtually identical fuse. It is still working
fine.
No question your best bet is a new one from Doug.

Subject: | Yak'in Cross Country |
All,
I am (finally) planning on flying my -52 cross country from Rosamond, CA
(L00) to Collegeville, PA (N10). Planned Departure is on 26 November
hopefully arriving in PA sometime the following weekend. My current
proposed course is taking the southern route through AZ, NM, TX, OK then
turning north towards Louisville, KY and finally through Ohio into PA. If
anyone has any pointers on taking a stock Yak (that's right - no extra fuel)
I'm all ears. If you see a desert camo -52 in your neighborhood the week
after Thanksgiving stop over and say hi!
