Jan
FWIW - the following quote is from Jill Gernetzke's web FAQ list I'd copied some
years back on engine numbering, have lost the URL so don't know if this web
page still exists;
QUOTE
Here's how to tell if you have a Russian, Romanian or helicopter engine:
K(YA): Russian (YA is actually a backwards "R")
RA: Romanian
KE: Helicopter
Serial Number meaning for the Russian engine, example KYA132026:
1st digit: Year example: 2001, 1991, 1981
2nd digit: Quarter of the year
3rd digit: Series of the engine
Last 3 digits: Ordinal, number off the production line
The numbering system is different for a Romanian engine. I will post it when I
have the information. Also, the original engine
Logbook, Section 2.3 will list the individual features of the engine. Special time
parameters may be listed here. I have warned
some engine shoppers to pay close attention to the data plate on the engine. There
are less than scrupulous sellers who may
try to pass off the engine as "new". Your first clue is a "missing" logbook. Your
second clue is the serial number is not only on
the data plate; it is also stamped onto a section of the rear case. They should
match.

Jan,
Externally, the cylinder cooling fin castings are different. The Series
I engine cylinder fins left and right of the spark plug are basically
all the same height. On the Series II engine cylinders, the fins are
different heights. The attached photo P413001.JPG is a Series II
cylinder. In the second photo, look closely at the cylinders. You can
see the fins are the same height. This is a Series I engine.

Does anyone know what the main differences are between the series I
and the series II M14P engine ? I know that the latter came out in the
early eighties, and that there were quite some improvements, but what
exactly? Are there any specific items that allow to make an easy
distinction visually (apart from the year it is built ?).

I believe that the changeover was 1982.
Both types are totally interchangeable, and both produce 360hp.
The changes are quite significant - for example the cylinders are
different, and there are a number of internal changes.
Perfectly possible to change Series I to Series II, but at considerable
expense.
External identification is very easy, because Series II has the large 5
inch circular plate on the top port side of the gear box.

Between the Type I and Type II you can also see an external difference in the Cooling
Fins on the cylinders. On the Type II it will appear that every other
fin is recessed. A side by side comparison makes this pretty obvious.
Additionally there are differences in the valve rocker box area that are not interchangeable
(valve spring cups for example).
The pistons are a different mass, and the wrist pins and pin caps are different
design and mass. However the total mass is identical.

Subject: CJ for Sale
Jerry:
A friend of mine has a CJ for sale here in Florida. Send buyers!! It i
s a
very nice, solid airplane. I have about 20 hours in it It is listed on
eBay right now.!!.
Hey....you still have that Cambodian CJ for sale....why your buyers no bu
y
that one???
Craig
Hi Craig--
It's always a very interesting airplane market out there, but especially
now
with the looming specter (or is that Spectre, attention James Bond fans)
of
worldwide economic slowdown and further plummeting of the US dollar. The
re
s even talk of recession in China. Yes, I still have the Cambodian CJ fo
r
sale. Wish I had some money, I'd buy it (and Steve's, too) myself! I ca
n't
explain why it hasn't sold yet, especially given that the price has been
substantially reduced. It's an exceptional, beautiful airplane (only $88
K,
better hurry up). I can't speak for others, Barry Hancock, Dennis Savare
se,
Bill Austin (hope you sold the Soko, Bill) et al, but the buyers I talk t
o
are (as usual) looking for the very best deals they can find. After the
9/11 airline meltdown eliminated lots of airline pilots from the market,
prices went down across the board, especially CJ's and big iron of all ki
nds
Jets and T-28 prices just flat melted. $5 gas hasn't helped. Pre-9/11
$100K+ was a pretty typical price for nice CJ's. Barry had his "Flying
Tiger" airplane with an M-14 advertised for $225K at one point--don't kno
w
if he got it or not, but I seriously doubt it (no offense, Barry--beautif
ul
airplane--BTW, what became of McLaughlin's nice CJ? Is it the blue camo
beauty?), and can't imagine him getting getting it today--except, maybe,
in
China! OTH try to find a comparable T-34--if there is such a thing (agai
n,
no offense, T-34's are terrific airplanes, just keep 'em out of the hands
of
Top Gun wannabees)--or even 172's at that price. Sounds cheap to me. Do
n't
know why things never picked up again. I guess if your airline is cuttin
g
your guts out its kinda hard to think about buying airplanes.
Just to make it more interesting, there has always been an imbalance in
Yak-52/CJ prices in the US. Overseas there has always been more interest
in
-52's than CJ's, especially in Europe. Now, the falling dollar has made
US
prices very attractive to foreign buyers, so we see lots of interest from
overseas, where airplanes priced in Euros (and other currencies, too) bri
ng
as much as twice the prices (in equivalent US dollars) we see in the US.
That's a complete reversal from a few years ago when the Euro was worth
about 75 cents US. Now the Euro is worth almost $1.50. (Had a hard-on fo
r a
CAP 232 back then, or even a CAP 10, but couldn't quite swing it. Oh wel
l.)
Consequently, overseas buyers can pay full US price and make (or save)
money, even after the cost of shipment etc. But the overseas market is v
ery
small, too, smaller than the US market, and fuel has always been another
order of magnitude altogether. As we all remember, back when you could b
uy
factory new -52's for under $60K (big ads in TAP for $56K, factory new) a
nd
CJ's for under $30K or even under $20K, and mogas was $1/gallon, they wer
e
such obvious steals the market boosted prices for several years, peaking
before 9/11 at over $100K for nice CJ's, though -52 prices never took off
here and have remained comparatively flat. Now that a new -52TW sells fo
r
more than $250K (beautiful airplane, wonderful airplane, screaming deal e
ven
at $250K, like the new oil cooler placement on the MK II, fuel injection,
electronic ignition, EFIS, congrats Cristian et al etc etc etc), practica
lly
new $110K W's, $135K TW's and $60K -52's here in the US look pretty cheap
,
ridiculously cheap, especially to Europeans. Fantastic airplanes for les
s
than putt-putt (no offense) Light Sport everybody's so hyped about. Even
ultralights and mice (no offense) J-3's sell for almost as much as Nice -
52
s! Back when I was a dealer for Aerostar we had trouble selling brand ne
w
-52W's and TW's for $125 and $150K. Don't imagine they're flying off the
shelves at $250K, though the price has remained pretty constant priced in
Euros. Again, compare that to T-34/172 prices. Screaming deal! I guess
that's what happens when we have huge deficits, banking meltdown (success
!
at last!--Junior has outdone Poppy's S&L fiasco!) and a bad war gone wors
e
forever. Yes, I like tax cuts--don't we all? Even erstwhile friends in
$100/barrel (thank you very much) Saudi decline Junior's entreaties. It'
s
all worked out pretty well for them, except for the rise of Shiite Iran.
Where, incidentally, as I'm sure you know, Ahmadinnerjacket got his peepe
e
whacked by the Ahmatoldya (no offense) the other day for denying natural
gas
shipments to part of the country. Seems they have a gas shortage, yes, i
n
Iran.
The worm turns. Hope it turns again, and soon, please!
Steve Byers' CJ in FLA, that's a good example. I guess Ebay hasn't quite
worked out and his price is now $84K--and falling. Nice airplane, too.
You
may remember that Fred Ihlenburg had another CJ with nearly identical pai
nt
(even with the same number on it--101) and an HS-6K 400hp engine, Collins
PN-101 HSI (wonder how it held up under acro) and a Garmin 430, lots of
smoke etc., if memory serves. I think he was asking about $200K for it.
Don't know what became of it, in fact I thought maybe it was the same
airplane Steve has. In the late 90's, before Fred was killed, Yakity was
advertising pimped out CJ's (gotta love 'em!) for $125K and selling all t
hey
could lay hands on. Fred claimed his ads on TAP generated a huge increas
e
in TAP readership (I don't doubt it--they were pretty entertaining ads) a
nd
he was running full page ads in other publications. Even so, it's never b
een
easy to sell Yaks or CJ's--the market is just too small--and my observati
on
is Ebay's not a very good place to sell airplanes (or much of anything el
se,
either) because the time frame is just so short and exposure so small it
severely limits the market. Again, today (as always) buyers are looking
for
low, low prices, especially on Ebay. Pretty tough to generate a feeding
frenzy when only a handful are even vaguely interested.
Seen some pretty good Ebay deals on boats, especially post-Katrina.
Of course, this is all from the seller's perspective. From a buyer's
perspective, it's a very good market, fantastic market. Only problem is,
just like stocks and bonds, interest peaks along with prices and everybod
y
runs for cover when prices fall. Looks like a great time to buy to me--f
ire
sale's on! Maybe Fed cut/elections will put a floor under it. Hope so,
still making payments on my house!

Ummm, not so sure of that Doc. I believe that it might have been
recommended not to use Gen 1 engines for a PF upgrade. I think Gen II
types are what were preferred. Richard Goode would know for sure of
course. I am just getting that feeling that I have heard something
about a limitation somewhere in the past.

Well it looks like its going to be hard to get an early start tomorrow. The
weather may not break until 1000 hours in this area of Florida (DAB/JAX).
Since I told Shane I'd get there ASAP, I am going to launch direct from FD44
as soon as I get 1,000&3 here. Perhaps an mid air join up might be possible
for those in this neck of the woods. I'll be on 123.15. My course will be
direct. I'll post my takeoff time here. I should pass abeam VQQ :25 after
TO.
May the weather gods smile on us all.

Just back from Bone fishing, it's 80 out scattered clouds, trades are
blowing lightly, Belikin beer is cooling and I just might go lay in the shade
and
contemplate my sins, then again maybe not. I have honestly tried to worry but
just can't seem to remember how.

Doug, You should be ashamed leaving you darling wife at home! I checked the
AWOS at Omak this
AM and it was " -9 degrees " Hell that would even freeze the balls off of a
Russian lawn jockey.

Hey Tom;
Dingbat (i.e.: Doug baby ) gets a retrieve here since, while bloody cold, there
is no new snow for Kathleen to shovel.
But, if snow does appear us Canucks while be happy to go and help in the shovelling.
Of course our good buddy will pay for this for some time to come in the
form of snivelling or just buying the booze.
BTW Doug what the hell is bone fishing ?
Cheers;
Walt

Craig, Pappy et al--
I feel for you po' boys down south, I really sho nuff do, havin' to swea
t
it out and swat bugs all year 'round--don't like shovelin' no stinkin'
leaves blown by no wind, neither, 'specially not in January. Lawzy! Win
ter
is for restin', not no stinkin' yard work! Mercy me! Don't need no stin
kin
bonefish (they're, er, bony), neither, Doug--and nobody likes a smarty a
ss!
And don't you have somethin' better to do down there wherever you are do
wn
there in some miserable backwards furrin' land, Believes or wherever you
are
stead a readin' the Yak-list on vacation, for Criminy sakes? Land a
Goshen! That's plenty ways too far to go just to sit at some stinkin'
computer all day! Y'all be careful of the skin cancer down there, too,
hear? And haven't I heard somethin' 'bout some kinda nasty wind y'all ge
t
down there, ah, hurricranes or somethin' so bad y'all give it a name like
,
ah, Katherina, Matilda or Fred or somethin' crazy like that? Careful!
Yes, we already got plenty a folks here 'bouts but I guess we can make ro
om
for y'all, keep a light on anyway. Just don't let the kids go out by
themselves, for gosh sake, 'specially not at night--might get attacked by
some big bug, or a snake or a lizard or a gator or somethin' truly horrib
le,
dontcha know! Whatch y'all doin' in such a crazy place, anyways? Lawzy
mercy!
Despite the (ah, deserved) dreary reputation, it's been 45F and sunny her
e
in Seattle the last several days--perfect (just don't ask how it was from
November 'til now). Ah, yes. You should probably get right on home now,
Doug, 'fore it goes away! Give me dead calm, stars and 20's at night, fr
ost
in the morning, snow on the mountains, sun in the blue, islands in the
(Puget Sound) stream. What more could you want--and nary a bug or snake
(nor gator, neither)!
We spent the holidays in Ottawa with kids and grandkids, where its usuall
y
freeze-ass. Got a truly terrific aviation museum there. The newspapers
were reminiscing about the Big One ten years ago when the Montreal area w
as
without power for months in some places. Not this year. We got a little
snow, then it warmed up to 53F and melted most of it. Didn't see any sno
w
in Chicago, either. Warmer there than here. Guess that's changed since
we
left, but Gore may be on to something, me thinks, eh? Both our daughter
and
her hubby are medical research bureaucrats working for Health Canada so w
hen
we become decrepit I guess we'll probly wind up there inna gummint paid
nursing home, dontcha know, freezin' our patooties off. Lord have mercy!
O
Canada!
You guys make me sick!
