For if God had wanted men to live in the snow and ice, He would put more hair on their bodies. Therefore those of us who live in the south are sainted. We know we will go to Heaven because we followed His will. You Yankees will have a lot of penance to do (like buying us southern's some beer at OSH in July) or you surely go to Hell. :) (Now if only this damn fog would burn off, I could go flying) Pappy **************Start the year off right. Easy ways to stay in shape Subject: Yak-List: Differences between Series I and Series II In reply to Jan, it is theoretically possible to convert Series I to M14PF. However by the time that you have nine new cylinders; Series II gearbox etc the cost would make it prohibitive. Certainly the view of Vedeneyev is that the Series I should not be converted to 400hp. Having said that it is a conversion that I have seen done on Series I engines, and I am not personally aware of any specific problems that have occurred! I'm putting this engine on one of my Yaks, and thus would prefer the normal Russian prop flange. Does anyone out there have a new or near new nose section with Russian prop flange they would like to trade for the SAE flange nose case? This number has been verified by a number of conversions. 3-blade props climb harder but don't seem to go any faster, not that I've seen anyway. You didn't mention an altitude for the 160KTS IAS but my 80% Sea Level cruise is 165 IAS and 168 KTS GPS @ 80 F; full throttle and 2900 rpm is way faster but burns "petrol" at an alarming rate. At 180 KTAS, the ailerons are stiff and my head bounces of the canopy in turbulence. I suspect that the turboprop will not make a better airplane, only faster. My old 285 HP engine could true out at 155 KTAS at 8500 MSL, but climb rate was only 1200 FPM. Some are faster, some are slower. Empty weight and rigging of the airframe and gear door fit accounts for most of the differences. P.S. my CJ is modified a mite.
