Subject: | Re: CJ Aux FuelCJ Aux Fuel |
Gill, Brian, and List,
I had Bill Blackwell install bladder tanks on my Nanchang (formerly Jeff
Linebaugh's) over two years ago. M14-P engine. No new fuel gauges.
Right now the old gauges have to burn down to 60 litres before they
start indicating, but I can calculate time/burn and live with that. Bill
did mention the caution of not having too much OR too little fuel in the
tanks when doing aerobatics. He was concerned that too little during
certain manuvers might cause fuel starvation, but that would likely be
true of any tank system wouldn't it? Thus far no problems other than an
as yet unidentified tendency to burn more out of the left tank than the
right. The aerobatics have been relatively tame (except when Ranger
turns us inside-out in his attempts to make me an idiot-proof aerobatic
pilot). I haven't spent as much time reviewing the Yak List as I used
to. Any suggestions on why I might be having this tendency to burn more
out of the left than right? I did have my mechanics thoroughly check
out the system during its recent annual and they found nothing amiss.
Playing with the vent system doesn't seem to help and I do notice a
suction when I open the fuel cap to refill at times. Maybe I need to
find more airports with left traffic patterns for my touch-and-gos.
Thanks guys,
Valkyrie

Anyone know who this Dennis Savarese is or his partner in crime Liutaurusis Dzmutis
out of Lithuania? I am sure I spelled their names wrong but who cares...
be warned: they are very shady and have scammed at least 10 people around the
country out of money. A good friend of mine paid a down payment ($25K) to to
Savarese 2 years ago for a Yak 18T that was to be delivered in 3 months. The
next payment was to be on "shipment" and another $25K was paid...no bill of
lading appeared. Dennis has collected $50,000 dollars at this point and is telling
my friend, "Sorry, this Liuaturus is currently doing this to me with 8 other
planes...I can't help you." I want this guy's head. What kind of rat does
this to a 78 year old pilot? (Now he's 80) A con artist? I know of 2 other
cases involving the same players and the same scam...Why are we letting this
guy stay active in our community? Dennis is either a fool or committing intentional
international bank and
commerce fraud on the level of a serious felony. I will SLAP this punk if I EVER
see him in person. Dennis you have been warned. I will run into you. Everyone
knows me and that I'll do what I say and know this...I am gunning for you
big-time. I have today contacted the U.S. Justice Department and they have
a Elderly Victims Task Force in place nationally for just this sort of crime.
I have no idea if they will pursue this but I guarantee you will hate meeting
me.

Subject: | Seems to me we need to be careful.... |
Just a note from someone who cares......
I would suggest that we as a community need to be very careful in ANY "modding"
done in association with our beloved aircraft, because:
a) after each significant airframe or engine mod, that pilot, and any subsequent
pilot/owner, now becomes a defacto 'Society of Experimental Test Pilots' member
for as long as he or she flies that aircraft, like it or not: besides, I hate
the 'missing man' formation;
b) we all become indirectly involved in modding decisions, because one way or another,
thru insurance costs or resale value, a mistake will impact us all, whether
thru the reputation of the aircraft and/or the people who operate them and
supply parts to them: perception is 95% of reality; and
c) the good people at the FAA are always looking for a reason to increase their
workload it seems (and their oversight of all of us).
Yes, these are experimental and as a result there are things we 'can' do to them,
but 'should' we do these things? I may well be a "nervous nelly", but when
I read about 'fuel' and 'rib cutting' and 'do-it-yourself' kits, etc., I get
somewhat concerned....
As for me, I think I'll leave the engineering of my aircraft's major components
to the 50 years of engineering performed by the good people at the Nanchang Aircraft
Manufacturing Company. After all, these ain't no 1955 Buicks we dealing
with here....
Just a thought....

Not necessarily. The CJ system has a "header" tank with non-return check valves
to ensure a continuous supply. The Harvard /T6 has a similar system but with
the "header" and check valve built into each main tank.
Thus far no problems other than an as yet unidentified tendency to burn more
out of the left tank than the right.
That seems to be a common trait of most CJ's. Possible causes include: sticking
check valve in the header tank, partially blocked vent system. IMHO the existing
fuel feed and vent system design contributes to the problem.
The aerobatics have been relatively tame (except when Ranger turns us inside-out

That sucking sound is a very definitive plugged vent warning. Suggest you get

Hi Josh,
You could also stop by KRVS in Tulsa. We've got 4 Yak's and CJ on the field, along
w/Yak tools, air, and 25W60. We could also shack you up for the night if
needed.

This sounds like an email pirate that starts BS on blogs......I have never seen
a G M post before.
This could be true what is being said but Dennis can only do his best against
what Lutaris tells him. The only way to solve a situation like this is to refund
the money and Lutarus to return the money back to Dennis. Dennis is the middle
man and can only do so much. The bad thing is Dennis is responcible for the
US customers that have the contracts with him.
I have delt with Dennis over the past 8 years and he is very much a stand up individual
and loves these aircraft enough to do this full work time. The problem
is that we dealers have to deal with people in old Russia that may not have
the same scuples and feelings about justice here in the USA. This is the problem.
I am very sorry this individual feels this way about Dennis but to threaten ones
well being is not the way to go. I would stand next to Dennis if this would
happen and that individual better be a big MF because he will have to go through
me. (as you all know me and my size)
Lets get back to positive YAK conversations gentlemen and let them work this out
off list.

This problem has been with the CJ-6 since it was prototype. It is the same

guys (and me too) have found that yaw trim is the problem. They can change tank
feed by applying rudder trim one way or the other. Changing from standard
tanks to bladder tanks with separated tanks vents didn't change the problem for
me at all.

Availability and higher power!
I cannot speak for Chinese engines, since we have so few CJ6 in Europe -
I think five as opposed to abut one hundred and fifty Yak-52!
Being in the engine business, it might seem I have a motive to talk up
engine prices, but rising prices give us huge problems since we have no
idea how much the next batch of overhauls will cost, and I would so much
prefer a stable market! However the main points are:
a.. The last production engine was made in 1994.
b.. A few engines have been made from new but old stock parts since
then.
c.. We have made many "new" PF 400hp, from unused M14Ps. However we
cannot find any more of these engines - the last one that we bought was
eighteen months ago.
d.. There are about 600 Yaks and Sukhois in the West, and all, at one
time or another needing new engines.
e.. Also about 250 Pitts 12; Murphy Moose; etc being made. All of
these need engines.
f.. The order for sixty new 18T aircraft from the Russian Ministry of
Transport (at US $600,000 each!) is good news, because, as part of it,
is a hundred new engines.
g.. Of course this a governmental deal, and so not strictly
commercial, but ex-factory price of these M14Ps (which are coming out
now) is US $65,000 each.
h.. As a spin off, there is a significant manufacture of engine
spares.
i.. For the high powered engines, there is clearly a huge amount of
money in Russia - but not much directed towards light aviation. Both
the M14R and the M9F are being sold, but in small numbers - our problem
is to get them, since we seem to be able to sell all we can get. They
are being used in other aircraft apart from competition aircraft - we
are putting a M9F into a Yak-18T, and, about to put a M14R into a Yak-50
- I think that this will do well over 5,000 feet per minute.
j.. Statistically we have found 400hp's a little more reliable than
360's -I think that is purely statistics, albeit over a large number of
engines. To an extent the 400s have typically been newer, and other
similar reasons.

Sheesh! Put out some information about why we're doing what we're
doing and get whacked for it.... I can see how you might think my
post about our tanks is self-serving, but that was not the intent.
My intent was merely to explain what we are doing and why we are
doing it. Gill, your bladders have done quite well, congrats. I'm
sure you'll sell lots more as time goes on...
Now, to answer Doug's specific questions:
> It would be a matter of how the tanks are constructed and supported by
> the existing straps. Are the straps supplemented and / or beefed up to
> handle 50% more load?
Yes, and we'll also incorporate a third strap. Again, drawings a
details will be available once we're complete.
> Is the modification to the outboard rib adequate
> to maintain integrity?
Of course...we wouldn't do it if it were not. Again, and I need to
stress this. We are following approved and widely recognized
structural reinforcement procedures. It needs to be stressed that
the mod will receive FAA DER approval. We do not take liberties with
the "Experimental" status when it comes to safety.
>
> Will the mod be available in kit form?
Yes.
> How is the tank to be vented?
Original vent system with a "top secret" (he says tongue in cheek.
It's simple and effective tho') mod to help balance fuel flow.
> What is the bottom line on price?
Still TBD, but will be competitive and reasonable.

Guys - this email showed up in my personal email and not on the list.
I do not personally know "G M" skypirate2@yahoo.com
Maybe only a personal issue between him and Dennis, but maybe both
sides should know what the other is spreading around on email.

Anyone know who this Dennis Savarese is or his partner in crime Liutaurusis
Dzmutis out of Lithuania? I am sure I spelled their names wrong but who
cares... be warned: they are very shady and have scammed at least 10 people
around the country out of money. A good friend of mine paid a down payment
($25K) to to Savarese 2 years ago for a Yak 18T that was to be delivered in
3 months. The next payment was to be on "shipment" and another $25K was
paid...no bill of lading appeared. Dennis has collected $50,000 dollars at
this point and is telling my friend, "Sorry, this Liuaturus is currently
doing this to me with 8 other planes...I can't help you." I want this guy's

Josh,
Two choices: Buy an RU one from Carl Hayes or Richard Goode. The other is
put in a Schader valve and get a Scuba bottle to store air. Of course you
will need a stage one, high pressure tubing and a strut tool. I can send you
the links for that.

In fact, without a means to prevent fuel from flowing back out to the
other tank, having two vents can force fuel from one tank to the other
by virtue of differential vent pressure. This is why Cessnas have a
single tank vent.
(If you get a chance, go look at the evolution of the Cessna fuel
system over time. This has been an ongoing problem with any Cessna
that has a "both" fuel selector position.)

Gee Wizz Gill.....You really owe Barry an apology for whacking him like you did.
If it weren't for folks like Bill, Barry, Dennis, Jill, Doug, the Coy's, and
a few others, we'd all be flying spam cans. Barry is simply disseminating to
the community what he is doing regarding a fuel tank mod for the CJ. If you
want one - buy it. If not - don't.
As Barry's note said, he will have full engineering drawings when the first set
of tanks is done. He has an FAA DER overseeing the project. Not necessary,
but a wise investment in safety as no DER will sign off a modification that he/she
sees as unsafe.
Barry has basically taken the Air Victoria mod (well proven) and asked the question,
"how can it be improved upon?" His goal was to provide the same capacity
as bladders but in a metal tank. CAD/CAM technology has allowed for a volumetric
analysis of the tank bay. So the next question was, "what will the tank
look like?" CAD/CAM helps here too. Additionally, it really is not rocket
science to determine the required burst strength of the supporting straps, over-design
them and add an extra strap for good measure.
As for bladders, they do wrinkle, trap water, etc, etc (just read NTSB reports).
They are life limited - just go look at any bladder manufacturer web site.
AND, they do require maintenance - just look at the number of bladder repair
companies there are. Also, you know of one damaged bladder on installation.
So do I and I'm sure they are different CJs. Take into account all the bladders
damaged while being installed in spam cans and I'm sure it is more than one.
Some like bladders. Some like metal tanks. Some like 52s. Some like CJs.
The idea is we can all LEARN a little by keeping an open mind to fuel mods, M-14s
replacing Housai's, RAT motors, clipped wings, malcom hoods, rudder pedal mods,
fuel injection, Cleveland nose wheels, oil filters, and on and on. Just
keep it civil and don't attack.

Gang,
In response to the recent query about CJ6.com, we have discontinued
using that URL and are solely at worldwidewarbirds.com now. There is
a split entry page that will take you to either CJ's or L-39's.
Doug Sapp's list of parts can be found through a link on the CJ
landing page.
Thanks for everyone's support. Once we get the site fully functional
I will be posting updates on mods, new aircraft for sale, etc. there.
Thanks to Tyson Rininger and Mike Jorgensen for the spectacular
photography used on the site.
Cheers,
Barry

Hi Brian;
This should not be a problem with the CJ since it has non-return check
valves in the header tank. It is some time since I studied the various
Cessna fuel schematics (100 series only) looking for
ideas to improve the CJ system. Don't remember much of the detail but you
are quite correct, they ended up with a single point vent.
I believe the original CJ vent valve is the primary culprit in the uneven
fuel flow problem. If you do some math and compare the actual fuel pressure
on either side of the vent valve flapper with various tank capacities you
find a massive differential required to open the valve (if one can refer to
grams as massive).
The differential, if I remember the numbers correctly, corresponded to a
minimum of 45 litres. This of course is in a static condition with no
acceleration of fuel due to turbulence or yaw. Any turbulence would improve
the situation, yaw could go either way.
The reason is the difference in the wetted area of the flapper valve on
either side.
I have modified the valves to reduce this differential to as close to zero
as possible. Theoretically
the valve will open with a 13 litre difference (static conditions). In
practice over the last 3 years or so the highest noted has been 15 litres.
It is a totally benign modification. I reduce the surface area of the valve
body to near line contact with the flapper. This decreases the effective
closing force.
Since then I have discovered that later aircraft have a different flapper.
It has been modified to increase the effective opening force. Have no idea
when the change was made. I believe it is slightly less effective than mine
but certainly better than the original.
Will attach some photos.
Photo #2 shows the mating surface of the flapper with the as-cast cut out
section in the center. The factory change increases the diameter of this
area to larger than the line dia. thereby increasing the opening force.
Cheers;
Walt

Referred, at least twice, to the Header tank non-return check valve as a vent valve.
It is not.
