Jon,
Contact Doug Sapp. I believe Doug stocks the cylinder baffle
rubber/leather strips. That's really the best solution. Replace with
new, identical parts.

Subject: Yak-List: cylinder baffle rubber strips
I have noticed that the paper-wrapped rubber strips at the top of my
cylinder baffles are... well, slowing turning to cr@p.
So, before I engineer my own not-so-clever solution to replacing them,
I thought I'd ask here if anybody had some ideas.
The rubber strips are about 1" wide, 1/4" thick and like 6 or 7" long.
They're usually in a little metal "tray" held in by rivets.
Not only are my strips slowly disintegrating but some of the trays are
suffering pretty badly, too (becoming detached from the baffles).
I was thinking to remove the trays entirely and cement rubber
replacements right to the top of the baffles.
But I don't know enough about "rubber" to know what to use that will
take the head, slime and vibration. Or how to attach new strips in a
mostly-permanent fashion.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Jon

JON, try a piece of cowling anti-chafe stripping; you can cut it to an
y length you choose and it''s tough enough to rivet if necessary.

Subject: | non-russian radio problems |
Before I bought my Yak the previous owner had removed the original radio and
installed a King KY97.
This worked OK with built in intercom but never as well as the original. I
fly a friends original Yak and it works much better.
Then I started having intermittent problems with it - intercom not working,
and sometimes failure to transmit. Also would not work when under negative
g.
Pressing the intercom button would usually cause it to function again, a
couple times I had to recycle power.
Then it finally stopped working almost completely. But it would always work
on the ground without the engine running.
Had the wiring looked at, then succumbed and bought a new Icom A210, with
the thought that the dual watch feature would be great for formo. Installed
it (tray compatible, tested on ground all worked perfect. Intercom sounded
better.
In a happy state pulled out the aircraft to go fly, started the
engine.and.you guessed it, radio stops working with the exact same symptoms
as before as with the King!
I said a few choice words! So, the fault appears to be not the radio but
something, somewhere in the install.
Any ideas? I am at a loss to think what could cause it - the power seems
fine (display illuminated solidly). Could a wire rubbing through to say a
jack or PTT cause such a fault?

Jorgen, When the radio doesn't transmit, Do the intercom still work? Does
the "xmit" indicator light on the radio come on? Therefore giving you
carrier only with no voice? If so you probably have a intermittent ground
in the mic circuit. If the radio doesn't light up the "xmit" indicator on
the A210 then it is most likely in the PTT switch or the connections of the
back of the switch. Sometimes if you look closely at the wiring from the
PTT switch down through the throttle handle and even further down where the
wiring makes the bend in the area of the throttle/prop cables you may find
some chafing in that area. You can spend a lot of time with this type of
problem. Another way to eliminate the PTT circuit is to make a temporary
ptt switch that bypasses every thing and connects to the back of the radio,
go fly as see the results..
Hope this helps,
Kregg

Yes. Isolate (insulate) the mic jack from ground and then give it its
own common return lead to the radio. Headphone jacks may be grounded
to the airframe. Make sure you have good wiring up to the intercom and
radio PTT buttons on the throttles.
FWIW, I have never found a built-in intercom that works worth a darn.
Best to get a first-class intercom and then mate that with the radio.

Subject: | Re: Northeast Spring Formation Clinic |
Guys,
Were less than a month away from our spring clinic (May 2-4). Heres an update
on the latest news:
So far there are 22 planes attending. If you havent already done so, please let
me know if youre attending.
We will have at least SEVEN Instructors and Check Pilots at the clinic. There
is also a good chance we will have both our RPA President (Darrell Condor Gary)
and VP (Dave Talon McGirt) flying with us! Come meet the Grand Poo-Bahs in
person.
All these IPs and CPs will be there to work with all current and future Flight
Leads. The goal is to grow our NE culture of excellence with our Lead pilots.
Anyone needing Wing training is also welcome.
If you havent already done so, CALL THE COMFORT INN (410-820-8333) ASAP to make
a reservation. Ask for the RedStar discount. This is a tourist area and rooms
fill up FAST in the spring!
I just had a meeting up in the control tower with the Airport Manager, Tower Chief
and other controllers. They are all very excited about our event. I explained
to the tower guys how we operate (formation take offs, and overheads to
land) and they will be giving us priority in the pattern over the spam cans.
We also worked out a parking plan that you will like (very convenient).
I anticipate the event fee to be $75-$100 per person for the weekend. This pays
for dinner and beer on both Friday and Saturday night, refreshments during the
day, and to cover some minor facility costs (like a couple dry-erase boards
and other stuff).
Dinner Friday night will be in a big corporate hanger at the airport. It will
be a catered meal by a very popular local chef who will be grilling our meal in
front of the hanger. He will also cater our dinner Saturday night (which will
include local favorite dishesreally GOOD stuff). Well also have plenty of
beer on hand. A very FUN event is planned for Saturday night entertainment.
Dont miss it!
We will have two FBOs providing fuel (at discounted prices), so refueling should
be fairly rapid and not delay us. They will have Phillips 25w60 on hand, so
dont worry about dragging it with you.
I dont think anyone will need to rent a car, but if you want one the FBO will have
them available (at a good rate).
We will be getting both local print and TV media coverage. Heres your chance to
star on TV. Harry, dont get any ideas!
The tower controllers and airport manager want to fly with us and I anticipate
several media rides as well. Id like to ask each of you to all plan on giving
one ride to these folks while youre here. Spare chutes and headsets will be
greatly appreciated.
There will be a Mass Formation event on Saturday afternoon. This will be our big
media event for the weekend.
Ski is coming from TX and will present a clinic on the proper way to clean your
Yak/CJ. This clinic will run from sunup to sundown on Friday.
CALL THE HOTEL ASAP!!!
