Subject: | high oil consumption |
Hi all,
my M14p consumes a good 2 quarts of oil during aerobatic flight @ 82% and
full throttle.
The engine is a little wet from oil from various parts but nothing like
spilling a quart over the engine each hour. Also the lower fusselage isn't
soaked more than other Yaks after such flight. Olny thing that surprised me
was some oil in the intake tube and the area just upstream of the intake
valve of cylinder #8 when I had to remove the tube for other reasons (not
sure whether this goes for the other cylinders too). Usually there is only
little oil dripping from the engine during parking and after pulling through
the prop and most of it from the intake drain. However I was told that my
engine is smoking quite more than others during start.
Since I believe it burns the oil while running at high power settings, I
would like to know how to troubelshoot into this.
Would a compression-check reveal a worn oilring or the other way around,
would a good compression necessarily mean there is no problem in this
cylinder? Would a boroscope-inspection into the cylinders tell me something
about it?
Could it be too much play in the valve guide making a path for oil from the
rocker-box?
Could it be a bad gasket in the supercharger binging oil into the intake
system?
How to tell without disassembling the whole engine?
Any idea would be much appreciated.

You probably have a minor oil leak. This would not be unusual. :-)
I use the following method to find leaks... seems to work pretty well.
"They" make a siphon hose spray nozzle attachment for air compressors. Any
large hardware store should have one.
Take the cowls both off and give the engine a good hosing down with mineral
spirits... if it's pretty oily, expect that you'll use at least a gallon,
probably two of mineral spirits.
Don't use anything more aggressive than mineral spirits, make sure you do i
t outside, and put drip pans under the engine to cut down on the mess.
Eventually you'll get the engine completely degreased and dry.
Run the airplane up, preferably with you at the controls and a mechanic who
's done this sort of thing before watching the engine. Obviously being any
where near the prop while it's running is extremely dangerous.
Either the leak will be immediately obvious, or you'll discover that you di
dn't get the engine as clean and dry as you'd thought (I usually fall into
this category) and you'll have to spray it down more.
Things to pay paraticular attention to:
Valve cover edges.
Rocker arm bolts.
Cylinder base gaskets.
Pushrod tube ends.
Oil lines and hose connections.
Good luck,

All,
I'll dig through my stuff here and see what I can find. I know I have some
used leather helmets if they want them, and I may have a intercom, all at no
charge if they want them. If anyone else is sending them anything maybe we
could consolidate all the parts into one shipment.

Jay,
Please give your son a "atta boy" for me. Congrats to you and mom too!
It's refreshing to see kids that are actually going somewhere, vs the punks
on the street and the gamers. We hope to see you both at OSH.

Subject: | High Oil Consumption |
As soon as you start doing aerobatics you will get a false reading about
engine oil consumption. The only way to see what the engine itself is
using is in straight and level flight.
To get an accurate figure, the engine should be fully warmed up; oil
level checked; fly for a minimum of forty five minutes at a variety of
power settings; land; properly scavenge oil out of the engine into the
tank and measure oil level.
There are a variety of potential problems in the oil system that can
cause excessive oil consumption in aerobatics - by throwing it out, but
clearly nothing to do with the engine itself.
A lot of smoke on start-up can be caused by a worn engine, or by a
faulty valve in the oil pump, allowing oil to migrate from the tank into
the engine.
Obviously valve-guides; worn piston-rings will increase fuel
consumption.
A worn seal between supercharger and crankcase would normally be seen by
oil in the manifold pressure gauge.

Amen! Wish I was flying at 18!
The "vintage military aircraft" cracked me up - mine is only 20 years old!

For what its worth I found an original pair of Russian leather hats in
new old stock
and had the leads changed to suit my Yak 52. Very stylish looking but
after a couple of sorties
I went back to David Clarks in a leather pseudo period scull cap because
the poor
sound attenuation in the original Russian ones made them intolerable to
use.

Do they need the male plug (on the helmet) or the female that it plugs
into?????

Subject: | CJ/Yak MX shop debrief for the SE community |
Folks,
My CJ had chronic oil leaks that my first shop was unable to rectify, I took
it to Zach of Atlanta based (Calhoun Regional Airport, 60 miles NNW of ATL) "Hawk
Aviation", an ex-Delta mechanic and small airplane focused A&P who has been
working on our aiplanes -
Their work was fantastic, started with a detailed report, to even include what
he would define when he addressed leaks, drips, seeps, etc. They did the work
fast, complete and when I went out there to spend a day and check flight the
CJ, since I have yet to land a home with jacks, he assisted with a out of balance
nosewheel. Engine was given a complete internal inspection, besides seal
replacements, lugs were checked/fixed and more - engine/prop was as dry as
any I've worked with. Watching the guys work, they know what their doing, I also
watched when Zach had a question he accessed the CJ manuals - didn't try to
"wing" the answer. Billing was straighforward and no bull (nose wheel fix was
thrown in, we went flying after the check flight).
So if you need an annual for your CJ or Yak and hear of "Hawk Aviation" in Calhoun
airport GA (phone 404-406-5252)-, I have to give this shop a very, very,
strong recommend.
Hope this helps anyone/someone, you can contact me off list if you would like
details on the work they performed, they also quoted an annual price,
Drew

Guys,
I am looking for a decent picture of the Yak 18U to use in an article.
Anyone have one out there? The one I do have (B&W left front 1/4) is poor and
grainy.
