On one hand,I suspect a new Bonanza is actually more money, but I don't see a market for new 18T's at that price. The problem that Smolensk THINKS that, having sold 60 for that order of price, there is a real market in the West! They are offering new 18T's to me and what is interesting is that the price ex-works is Euro 455,000 (the Russians have given up US Dollars), which today is US $719,000. The Ministry of Transport order incorporates long-range wing tanks; 3-blade propeller and quite sophisticated avionics, and it is not clear to me whether this price covers those items - but I suspect that they will not be selling a lot to the West. Just a heads up for those interested. Jim Selby & Jim Selby, Jr. will be featured in the UK's Loop Magazine hitting shelves any day now. While I don't know what US outlets will be carrying the magazine, there is an online preview of the article and a more in-depth, page-by-page spread if you choose to sign up (free) on the website. The story revolves around the sole-surviving Yak-53 and includes photos from one of the initial first flights in the US four years ago along with a detailed 'walk-around' of the aircraft. Upon hearing of the Yak-53's unique history, the magazine dedicated an unprecedented eleven-page spread not only to the '53, but also the history of Yakovlev and a layman's version of the Yak vs. CJ discussion. For more information: http://www.loop.aero/ Also insuring postal carrier job security, International Council of Air Show members will be receiving their quarterly edition of Airshows Magazine with Barry Hancock flying Mark Schrick's Yak-50 over Central California. In an effort to promote Red Star and future airshow participation, president of ICAS, John Cudahy has chosen the image as the cover photo for the next issue. For more information: http://www.icashq.org/ I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at the next All Red Star in May as well as joining you all for the festivities at Oshkosh and will continue doing what I can to promote the Eastern Bloc community! Keep flying! Tyson

Surely they realize the civilian general aviation market will not support prices like that, particularly when similar GA aircraft with Continental and Lycoming engines have 2000 hour TBO's. This is slightly unrelated, but I think y'all will like it anyway. We were out at the RAF Museum at Duxford yesterday. Weather was absolutely perfect. The Aerostars were there practicing... they put on a good show. Near the end of the day we were watching a Spitfire going around a bit and when the pilot landed we went over to tell the pilot that where we're from, flying a dual-control Spitfire with an empty back seat is a violation. Well, he told us that the Spitfire belongs to his mom, and he just turned * 23* so he's been out every nice day to rack up the 50 hours he needs before the insurance company will let him take passengers. Talk about having your stars aligned! Great kid... he seemed to be enjoyin g the hell out of it. Jon

In the scheme of things... It matters very little .... At least as what concerns automobiles! :-) As an aside, the oil I was talking about does not contain detergent. These oils were designed for use in drag racing applications primarily, where oil changes take place just about every time you run them. As I recall they had experimented with detergent oils for aircraft but had determined that there was a danger of pre-ignition in air cooled cylinders due to the presence of super heated ash particles from the detergent. Apparently not a problem with liquid cooling. Perhaps racing engines are subject to higher temperatures and a similar problem with detergents. That was so many years back I may be totally out to lunch but that is what I remember. Cheers; Walt

What does everyone do about their felt grease seals? Do you just replace the old ones (if they are still on the wheel) or are there replacement seals? I have a rear seal that is falling apart and is basically useless and am missing a front seal. Thanks Rich Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=178778#178778

I replaced mine. I got them from Jill at m14p.com. I also almost decided to set my plane on fire out of frustration in trying to get them on the wheel and then the wheel on the plane without twisting or crimping the seal. What I failed to realize is that just looking at the seals will cause them to stretch so that they are too big for the slot they go in, and then you are screwed. Perhaps someone else knows a neat trick, but I just had to keep trying until I got them in. They were also tight as hell at first and I really had to overtighten the bearings to keep the inner seal plate from turning when the wheel would roll. After a few flights I could readjust the bearings and everything was fine. Even now the seal seem to have settled into position. I would DEFINITELY replace the seals though. Mine were missing after the importation and wheel bearing grease was getting past where the seal was supposed to be and onto the brake pads and drum. You can only imagine how poor the brakes were. My 2 cents. I have the left overs of an old felt cover for a pool table. You could cut out circular patterns and lube them for use on your CJ. That would be option one OR you could pay Doug the 18 cents (estimated) to get the real thing. Nothing goes through, not even hydraulic fluid. I did mine in white so that when I look under the airplane I know precisely what is leaking and from where. I then just take a rag a wipe it up completely. Hydraulic fluid does get sticky and needs a bit of solvent to wipe it up but neither 100LL nor stoddard solvent will attack the polyurethane. -- Brian Lloyd Granite Bay Montessori brian AT gbmontessori DOT com 9330 Sierra College Blvd. +1.916.367.2131 (voice) Roseville, CA 95661, USA http://www.gbmontessori.com I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things . . . Subject: inverted oil pressure
Hey Guys, Was doing an outside loop today in the old 52 and noticed the prop sounded funny and the airplane was losing energy way too fast. Looked at the oil pressure and it was 0. Zip. Nothing. Turned said outside loop into a tail slide, got her upright and the oil pressure returned to normal. Played around with a bunch more maneuvers, and noticed that oil pressure was normal anytime I was positive and zero anytime I was negative. Makes me think check valve balls in inverted system. What do you guy think? Where do I start looking? Thanks. Jay **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. From: "Tim Gagnon" <NiftyYak50@fuse.net>
I am curious what everyones opinions is on the use/need of carb heat. My airplane has the gear but honestly it has never worked. I have never had an issue and I live in the midwest where we do have some humidity. It is there for a reason....so is it worthwhile to figure what the hell is wrong with it. I probably will but want to make sure I am not chasing my tail. I hope everyone is well! T Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=178859#178859

    From: "Tim Gagnon" <NiftyYak50@fuse.net>
I need the spring with the brass cap from the pop off valve.....mine went TU today. I was hoping someone had one laying around that needed a good home. As stated in another post, I am working out my carb heat issue and need the probe that attaches to the airbox. I am working on a squawk sheet prior to my airplane having possible/probable sale. The single-point fuel injection system used in the Yaks and CJs (I call it that because everyone thinks carb ice when you say "carburetor") is not prone to icing. The fuel spray bar is downstream from the throttle valve and feeds fuel directly into the supercharger housing. The drop in temp from the vaporizing fuel takes place in the supercharger housing where it is more than offset by the thermal mass of the blower impeller and compression heating. The real reason for having "carb heat" is to provide a source of alternate air. -- Brian Lloyd 3191 Western Drive brian HYPHEN 1927 AT lloyd DOT com Cameron Park, CA 95682 +1.916.367.2131 (voice) +1.270.912.0788 (fax) I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things . . .
