Some of these service bulletins, specifically about strength, are very impo
rtant. They were issued after some vital accidents (Gomljajev f.i.). I am
on an airfield with three Yak 52=92s, and in my humble opinion, a Yak 52 se
ems to be stronger built than a Yak 50. Although I think that my Yak 50 is
a good one out of the remaining few, I have much more work to keep it flyin
g than my fellow Yak 52 collegues. But if you=92ve ever flown a Yak 50 than
you know it=92s worth all that effort !

hi folks,First msg on this server. Have had some issues with our radio rece
ntly. I encountered issues whereby I couldn't transmit but could still rece
ive. At the airshow we were at, we swapped transmittors with a fellow '52 p
ilot and found the comms were fine, just wondering how much are these trans
mittors, and the radio unit itself, in the US? We have limited sources here
in New Zealand. Can anyone shed any light, or personal opinions of the yak
50. Are the dramas with all these service bulletins really a big pain in t

Yes, the Yak 50 is an outstanding aircraft. Mine (with a three bladed prop
and M14P) outperforms an Extra 300L (with four-bladed prop) as for climbing
performance. Not for aerobatics of course, since the roll rate is too low.
But it has the looks, the sound and the behaviour of a small fighter. I love
it, although it is very demanding as for maintenance. And it's an absolute
thrill making low passes at more than 200 knots J

Once you have flown a 50, you will not want to go back to the family YAK. As
for maintenance, I have not found mine to be anymore labor intensive than my
52. The 52 was zero timed refurbished in Lithuania and the 50 was IRAN'd at
Shakety. With the 50, I have some issues of my own creating though but time
spent with her down is pretty minimal as is the 52. It has half the systems
of a 52.

I have been told by the local avionics guru that my Russian comm radio is
not repairable (more than likely he doesn't know how). What types of
radios can successfully be placed into the Yak52 instrument panel in place
of the Russian one?

A very functional radio that will fit well in the original VHF radio control
panel slot (with an adapter plate of course) is the XCom round VHF radio.
It is a 2 1/4" round (57mm) digital flip-flop radio with the capability to
monitor the standby frequency and with a built in VOX key intercom should
you wish to use the capability. Very cost effective.
http://www.xcom760.com/ You will need a voltage converter (28V to 14V) for
this and most other small, compact VHF radios.

The Becker radio also works. Has a flip flop function with an internal
intercom. Also needs a 24 to 12 V converter.
