Subject: Bad News on Auto Gas and Ethanol
    From: "Mozam" <sdalton@hughes.net>
It appears that the days of burning ANY auto gas in airplanes may be over. I have been lucky to have supplies of non-ethanol auto gas where I live. Today I tested my usual source and found ethanol in the fuel. The pump had NO label of any kind on it warning of ethanol in the fuel. I know the owner of the station and he denied the fuel could have ethanol in it. I showed him how to test for it and he was flappergasted to say the least. I called my brother who has an antique Fairchild and uses auto gas in it. He is a hydrogeologist and told me of a conversation he just had with a buddy who works in a Shell refinery where my brother was drilling water quality monitoring wells. According to this guy, ALL auto gasoline sold in America now has "some" ethanol in it. Apparently, it is impossible (or cost prohibitive) to keep ethanol out of "so-called" non-ethanol gas during the transportation process (pipelines). He said that as long as the ethanol content was not more than 10%, it can be legally sold as "non-ethanol" gasoline. He said many station owners have no idea that the fuel they buy has some ethanol in it. And this fuel does not have to be labeled at the pump as containing ethanol. Make sure you test any auto gas before you use it in any airplane! DO NOT trust the labels on the pump. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=183884#183884

    Subject: Fuel Costs
Where is fuel going to end up? At 17 gallons an hour and possibly $10. per gallon fuel, the cost of ownership sadly may ground or keep flying to a minimum for some owners and may flood the market with Yaks. Looks like auto fuel burning Nanchangs have the upper hand in this realm although ethanol is an issue. Hopefully ethanol will go away leaving the auto fuel option for CJ pilots. Corn belongs on your plate, not in your tank.. Any insight concerning the fuel situation? I worry about the value of my plane dropping and would appreciate any comments.
