12 blades turns the crank around 6 times . Each piston goes up down the bore at least twice for the complete four stroke cycle. Real world I have never went more than four before I hit the lock. 6 turns may encounter the lock, I have had oil come out of the pipe on successive turns, I've always done 12 to be super sure that I've gotten ALL the oil out of the cylinders, not just searching for a lock. All......my CJ is gone, I am no longer a Chang pilot, I'm now a measly 172 driver. I may still see some of you @ AYS, so long...its been fun. The very real danger situation is oil trapped behind a closed inlet valve within the inlet manifold, as the engine fires on another cylinder and subsequently the oil is ingested in a gulp .............. well you know the rest ! Stick to 12 and play safe.................. more in sub zero situations would be my advice.......... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ernest Martinez" <erniel29@gmail.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 3:50 PM Subject: Re: Yak-List: How many blades? > > 6 turns may encounter the lock, I have had oil come out of the pipe on

True.....but......crank turing around 6 times is not completely true....don't forget the prop makes less turns than the crankshaft (1,54 if I'm not mistaking...)...i.e. the crank makes only about 4 turns..... Hi All, I am currently getting both fuel tanks welded in my 52 due to leakage. When we removed the lower wing panels the middle tank strap was missing which added to the premature tank removal. Does anyone know of a source for two straps that I can replace upon reinstalling the repaired tanks? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Warren Hallstrom aviat501@yahoo.com

Hi Doug, maybe someone on the YAK list has experience with the CJ straps in regard to modifying them to work in the YAK. Thanks Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=187214#187214

    Subject: pneumatic test item
As annoyed as I've gotten lately with pneumatic issues, I'd be willing to p ay someone (a rare thing for me to say!) for the following: 1. Adapter that goes from 1/4" NPT to the 17mm nut and flare. Might be fro m 1/4" NPT to the nipple and then a short double-female additional piece. 2. 17mm nut and flare "cap"... so that I can cap a nipple and stop air from coming out. I want to be able to test things like the QSF-2A valves and air pressure ga uge before removing them from the airplane. Once #1 is out to 1/4" NPT it will be easy to get a long braided-steel line to and adapter to put it on a n air/nitrogen high pressure source. If you've got something you can sell, or you can make it, please email me! Jon

Hi, I always does 24 turns, first 6 very slow to let possible oil in cylinders a chance to sip out. And the first 12 with a light hand, after 12 turns I prime 5 times and let the prime fuel help us flush away the last oil. Then I do the rest of our pre flight. Just before entering the cockpit I prime new 5 and another 6 turns light handed DO NOT USE FORCE. I jump into cockpit and strap my self in and let the primed fuel get between 2-4 min rest, then prime 1 for each 10 Celsius below 100 celsius EGT. Pump fuel pressure and hit the start button. With this procedure I have had no miss starts and the engine has not taken any damage. But remember that overpriming can cause hyd lock as well, so it is important to wait the 2-4 min and let the fuel wapour. Subject: Re: YAK 52 FUEL TANK STRAPS
Virtually all Yak 52's have only 2 straps holding the fuel tanks, even though there are 3 braces on the top side of tanks. Many of the cracks that develop in the fuel tanks are caused by the expansion/contraction of the metal tanks during hot weather causing the tanks to expand because the vent system in pre-1989 Yak 52's is very poorly designed. Have you ever opened the fuel caps during hot weather and heard the "whoosh"? With a vent system like the post 1989 Yak 52's have on them (two vent tubes under the belly of the airplane behind the nose wheel indentation instead of one), the problem of expansion and contraction disappears. Welding will fix the existing cracks, but it may happen again (cracking). You may want to consider replacing the metal 60 liter fuel tanks with our custom made fuel bladders which are designed specifically to fit into the entire fuel cavity. This will give you a true 87 liters per side. Or approximately 46 US gallons total. Another hour of gas. They are an easy 2-day installation. If you are interested, please contact me off-line at dsavarese0812@bellsouth.net, or call me at 334-285-2141, central time in the US. How many blades? Since any 4 stroke cycle engine cylinder requires 720 Deg. of crankshaft rotation to complete a cycle then the basic MINIMUM requirement is two revolutions of the crankshaft. This applies whether there is one cylinder or nine. The nine cyl. radial has an 80 deg. cycle interval (720/9). In two revolutions of the crank all cylinders have completed a cycle. Two complete cycles are recommended to clear the cylinders. Therefore with a direct drive engine the theoretical minimum is 8 blades for a two blade and 12 for a three blade. The actual minimum recommended is 9 blades for a two blade prop. For the Huosai engine with a gear ratio of 0.787 the requirement for prop rotation would be 720 X 0.787 = 566.6 degs or 1.57 turns per cycle. Two complete cycles would take 3.15 revolutions or 7 blades (for a two blade) For the M14P it would be 720 X 0.658 = 474 degs. or 1.32 turns per cycle. Two cycles would need 2.63 revolutions or 6 blades (for a two blade) or 9 for a three blade. More won't hurt but is really not necessary. What is necessary is that the prop be turned VERY SLOWLY so that at the first sign of oil from the exhaust turning is stopped (and maybe slightly backed up) so that cylinder can be completely drained before continuing.
