It was an FS450. The manual for the FS450 is the part that's
complicated. Most folks agree the manual was poorly written. Once you
get it set though, I find it quite simple to use. Maybe that's because
I have a Yak 52 and always fill up at the fuel pump. Simply press the
AUTO button after the initial test cycle and the fuel quantity is reset
to full fuel.

G'Day Dennis,
What fuel flow meter di you install.
I recently sold a aircraft in which I had installed a FS 450.
too complicated to use. Shadin is much easier.
Now have a 18T on the water to Australia and hence interested in the
instrument that you used.
Cheers and regards,
Chrs.

Peter,
You should first have your manifold pressure instrument calibrated
by an avionics shop. It's very easy to adjust by removing the screw at
the back of the instrument. Regardless of what I or anyone else says
is the so called "best" power setting to achieve the best MPG, it will
depend on barometric pressure, altitude and wind speed and how well your
carburetor is "tuned".
In other words, it will vary greatly depending on conditions. The
fuel flow instrument when coupled to the GPS, including a handheld, will
display the MPG which you can then play with the prop and manifold
pressure. Simply saying, "set the prop at X and set the manifold
pressure at Y" is not going to work very well because of the variables
previously mentioned.
From my perspective, it's the best $500 I've spent on the airplane
because it does allow me to save fuel. And at $5+ per gallon, it
doesn't take long to pay for itself.

A few people on this list have been talking about installing Fuel
Flow measuring equipment in their planes. I=92ve also noted that these
systems can be integrated with a GPS so you could get best miles over
ground per gallon information.
Then, the compelling question is, at what prop and manifold
settings are we seeing the best mpg?

While my FS450 fuel flow gauge was useful, it was even better when I coupled it
to my GPS. The MPG readout helps sort out variables such as winds and altitudes
while calculating fuel to waypoint, fuel remaining, based on actual usage per
distance flown.

Jack,
Can you use one from a CJ6? I have them new, with the stainless steel
needle valve in them which pretty much stops the rust out problems.

It's possible Doug as long as Jack removes the flare fittings from the
old one and reinstalls them in the new valve. Not 100% certain though.
But they do look similar.

EGT temps vary with probe position, exhaust pipe leakage, etc. It is the Relative
number that means something. Unless the engine is equipped with a 9 point EGT,
I favor leaning to the Rich side of of peak because there may be a few cylinders
leaner than the indicated temp.
Another factor is that a supercharged radial has good fuel distribution: there
is a lack of "roughness" like flat engines when lean of peak ... everything can
get quiet real fast.

I went the less expensive route and got the Fuel Mizer from aircraft spruce. It
doesn't have a GPS interface but if you're pinching pennies it does the trick.
