It is about 5 degrees off and I have no more adjustment on the studs. The aircraft seemed to be running fine on the right mag, so the assumption was that it was timed correctly. One other item, I know where the timing marks are on the prop hub, but don't know where the marks are on the engine. Can anyone help me with the location of the timing mark on the engine case? Dennis Savarese" Subject: Re: Yak-List: Timing Jim, Timing a new magneto can be somewhat of a challenge. If you have a copy of the M14 maintenance manual, it is highly recommended you go through the installation procedure for a new magneto which is on page 205, Task Card 202. Trying to explain this on the yak list is difficult to say the least. Basically though, there are 3 timings that you must go through; raw, course and fine. Raw timing - setting the coupling on the bottom of the magneto to the correct position prior to installing the magneto. Course timing - adjustment of the magneto by rotating the magneto in the slotted holes. Fine timing - adjustment of the plate to which the points are mounted by the eccentric screw on the opposite side of the points. It is important that you following the procedure in the manual starting with the setting of the coupling. Otherwise you will be chasing your tail for a very long time. Using a magneto synchronizer/timing box and after you have the mags firing fairly close to each other, you can tweak the timing or synchronize the mags using the concentric adjustment screw on the opposite side of the points. You must loosen the large slotted screws on the sides of the plate first. Do not loosen the small slotted screws as these are loosened to adjust the point gap. (.25 to .35 mm or .010 to .014). Point gap will also affect the timing position. But the most important thing to do is to set the coupling on the bottom of the mag as instructed in Task Card 202. Remove the MAG from the engine. Look on the bottom of the MAG for the coupling. This coupling is really slick. You will notice that if you loosen one bolt that holds it on, you can turn the OTHER bolt and it will move the whole coupling on the MAG shaft. Look carefully at this thing, it is an ADJUSTABLE MECHANISM! Since you already know which direction you need to go on the screw slots to get the 5 degrees more that you need, you should be able to look at that coupling shaft and adjust it in the correct direction. Be careful, a small adjustment goes a long way. You can then put the mag back onto the engine, and try to sync the darn thing. By a lot of trial and error, you can even end up getting it synced with the screw slot holes for the mag itself "in the middle" per se. Lastly, there is a fine tuning screw opposite of the points themselves. This is one of those "egg shaped" deals that as you turn it, it moves the assembly. I think it is actually moving the breaker plate for the points. This is kind of the way that a vacuum advance breaker plate advances the timing on a automobile distributor. ANYWAY... With that knowledge, and a lot of time and patience you can get from to your goal. It's not a lot of fun, but it is a worthwhile learning experience. I'm looking for an intake manifold drain kit, or at the very least the plug ends that will thread into the manifold itself. I have the stock Housai engine and manifold sections. I've talked to Doug Sapp and Jim Kimball and neither carry them, at least not for the HS-6, and I'm under the impression the plugs for the M-14p don't fit. >From a cost perspective replacing the intake manifold for this isn't really practical, but I'd really like to speed up my aircraft prep time and quick drains would sure do the trick!
