With thoughts of a future CJ-6 purchase, and after reading about the
state of the M14 inventory, I can't help but to wonder about the future
for the HS-6? Is this engine also heading the same direction as the
M14s in price and availability?
Thanks,
Mike Ryan

Subject: | Re: Future of Huosai HS-6A engine? |
Mike,
"Heading" would infer that they have yet to increase in price, which is not
the case. HS6A first overhauls are getting very hard to find and when you
do find one you'd best be ready to pay 17 to 18K, which is a very good deal
considering what they are now selling for in China. What impact the earth
quake damage at the factory will have is yet to be seen, but I have been
told that it is shut down for repairs. The third overhauled engines which
have been passed over for the last few years are still available for 8 to
10K, but who wants a engine with 1500 hours on the bottom end?? I have
heard many say "before I'd pay 18K for a 285 I'd pay 20K for a M14", IMHO
20K 0 time M14's are a thing of the past and don't forget that you still
have to buy a prop @ a min of 3500.00, an exhaust @ 1750.00, gills or
shutters @2,000, a engine ring 250.00 and them put the whole thing
togather. With all this considered plus the state of the economy, staying
with the 285 suddenly makes a lot of sense. The smart buyer will zero in on
those CJs with a fresh or low time engine, there are a few of them out
there, you just got to shop around.

No. that aircraft is still in production by the Chinese. They are still
producing the engines for those aircraft. Doug and Barry can confirm that.

I believe Pappy is thinking of Marines that started at zero and became
Aces JUST during the Korean Conflict and in that case, there was only
one, John Bolt. At least that is what the official records say.
On the other hand, if you ask the question: "How many Marines became
Aces during the Korean Conflict, I believe that answer would be three
(John W Andre, John F. Bolt and Philip C. Delong) Andre and Delong each
had 5 combined kills from both WW-II and Korea.
In my way of thinking, it does not matter what war or war's you were in,
when you shoot down 5, you're an Ace, right then and there.
As for any make or model of CJ managing to put holes into a Corsair,
well shoot... Anything can happen! For example, a Corsair shot down a
Mig in Korea! An example of being in the right place, at the right
time, with loaded guns and being either very good or very lucky with
them. So the key wording there is: "MIGHT HAVE BEEN". As in: Next
time I go real world 1 V 1 with my YAK-50 against an F-18, I might shoot
one round with my .45 Colt and hit the F-18 pilot in the head and win.
The word "might" carries infinate odds.

The only Marine corp ace during Korean shot down 5 of these types. No
migs - just poor old little Yak 18s. BTW the CJ didn't fly until August
28 1958. Had he encounter a B model, well there might have been a
Corsair with a few holes in it. :-)

I have new % tach's and tach gens from AN14 aircraft which carried the M14B

just remove one hand. Contact me off line if you have an interest. Hope
all is good with you and yours. Going to Osh?

Why not do the entire changeover to the automotive conversion using my
kit? I've shipped over a hundred of these kits all over the world
without problems. Read about it and see a few photos of the
installation on my web site. http://www.yak-52.com/plug_conversion.htm
You can also download the complete 14 page installation instructions
with lots of color photos of the entire process.

Yes, especially since the early versions had a habit of shucking their fines
after launch FODing the engine. Nothing like being shot down by your own
ordinance. Just not your lucky day when that happens.

Subject: | Skyhawk Killing Mig-17 |
Hi Mark,
Unless this amazing ty[e of a kill actually happened earlier in Vietnam, the documented
kill of an A-4 Skyhawk that shot down a Mig-17 with a salvo of Zuni rockets
was by an Israeli pilot Col. Ezra "Babban" Dotan over Syria/South Lebanon
border on May 12th, 1970.
Please check www.skyhawk.org/2e/israel/israeli-skyhawk-combat.htm
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-4_Skyhawk (Scroll down to section discussing the A-4 combat history in the Israeli Airforce)
Col. Dotan shot down two Mig-17s that day... one with his Defa 30mm Cannon and
than he ran out of ammo while in perfect close range and 6 O'clock position behind
the second Mig-17. Had to be quite frustrating! He still had 2 pods of
Zuni rockets... the first salvo fell well below the Mig-17. He raised his nose
quite high, "guestimating" the trajectory of the rockets and fired the second
salvo. The Mig exploded - he had no chance to avoid the debris and flew right
through them causing damage to the tail surfaces and engine. He was able to
nurse the Skyhawk back for a safe landing.
The reason I know the story is that he told it to me in person. His total career
score was 5 kills (Ace)- his other three Kills were all in Mirage III. Unfortunately,
he died of Cancer not an old man.
FWIW,
Sam Sax
