I found a inspection cover missing above my oil cooler. I also found several other
Yaks had the same inspection cover missing when I looked at them. I was getting
a lot of smoke and exhaust into my cockpit causing head aches after flying.
It took me a long time to figured it out until I put in a smoke system and
could see it. I purchased a digital meter from Aircraft spruce after I discovered
the indicator on the business card gizmo does not work, and it was new.
I was getting large doses of bad stuff. After fitting a new inspection plate
and sealing around the front and rear of the oil cooler. there is a large space
between the scoop and the and the front of the cooler where it also allows
the exhaust to circumvent the cooler into the wing root into the cockpit low
pressure area. In cruise I now have a 0 reading on my meter and I do get some
gasses when running up with the window open and steep maneuvers like high glide
angles for landing. You will also find exhaust gasses coming up through the
floor around the nose gear retract cylinder if not properly sealed. I used two
zip ties for that.
I would caution everyone to get rid of the old dot on a card and try a digital
meter. At least borrow one from someone and fly once with it.
Dale

Any new info from OSH? Since some of us had other commitments to work (that
other 4 letter word) were unable to attend. An upcoming ORE demanded more
attention than a trip to OSH.
The list has been eerily quiet post OSH? Any lessons learned?

Subject: | Flight Instructor Needed |
Now that Oshkosh is over, I'm posting this message again in hope of
locating a CFI that can give me 10 hours of dual in my CJ to meet
insurance requirements. My aircraft is located in Owatonna, Minnesota.
A total restoration was completed along with the test hours flown off.
It is fitted with a Malcolm hood as I am 6'4. I need the extra space so
I'd rather fly my own airplane. I have tail wheel, complex and 800 hours
in a Grumman AA-1B. Please contact me off list if you can help me.
Thanks.

We had 46 aircraft in the air at once. Yep there were some mistakes - one
serious one, but no one traded paint. Orchestrating 46 aircraft is not an
easy job and it was nice having Talon do the honors while I fussed over other
things.
I was told by a number of people that it was the best OSH ever. If you were
not there - well you just missed a once in a life time celebration. 50
years only come around once. Every day we had catered lunches. A pig roast one
evening with unlimited beer/wine. Special shirt, a special coin with your
formation position inscribed on the coin. A great banquet with lots of door
prizes.
We flew every day except Thursday and Friday (Friday was a late show and
would not have given us enough time to get to the banquet). I believe the
smallest formation we put up was 25 aircraft (Saturday).
ETB was great too. A week before, I knew of only 12 aircraft that were
signed up. Some 32 ended up there by Sunday. Craig Payne did a great job of
setting up that whole thing. A lot of new guys there too. The FBO screw us
some by not having a decent fuel truck (it only held 500 gal) which could not
keep up. The repercussion of that caused us to be able to practice the "50"
once before heading to OSH. That showed up during the show too unfortunately.
I think we're quite because we're all still tired!!!
"From this day to the ending of the world
But we in it shall be remember' d
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers:
For he today that fly's with me
Shall be my brother, be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That flew with us upon this AirVenture day"
(to paraphrase King Henry some what) :-)
