Blitz- Your situation with your engine running rough could be a suction
side leak in your fuel system. I fought similar symptoms for about a
year
until it was figured out. I would fly for +/- 45 min and then my engine
would start running rough. Over time the problem got worse.. to the
point that
it would stop running for a second then start again. I would suspect
that you are on the verge of getting to that point. My suction side leak
ended up being through the
wobble pump and the fitting into the pump- which has a straight fitting
and a fiber gasket that can dry up. The hotter and higher I flew the
more the problem manifested itself.
The problem with a leak on the suction side is that you may not have a
fuel stain to help track down the location because it will suck in air
but not leak fuel.
I went through the whole litany of checking and tearing down mags. When
the mixture gets too lean it can mimic a mag problem by giving you large
Mag drops from the excessive lean mixture. Don't let it go because when
it decides to start sucking more air it WILL scare the shit out of you!

Just for the record several years ago I spoke with both?a Phillips and Shell oils
engineers about this subject.? Both of them said in no uncertain terms to NOT
put MMO in their aviation oils.? That all it would do is degrade the performance
of oils that their companies spent millions developing for aircraft engines.?That
was better than hearsay and wife's tails for me.??But I do add it to
the fuel and have had no valve or upper cylinder problems?whatsoever,?that's
over 1000hrs now.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard Vladmir speak. He advocated replacing the
wobble pump with an electric pump
(http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/facetpumps.php). Probably
won't help in this case, but it's something to think about while you're
working on the wobble pump.

So with the PN 40164 24v Facet automotive fuel pump we can eliminate the Primer
pump and have a backup for loss of the shaft drive fuel pump? It will be pumping
30 gph directly into the supercharger though assuming the 24v model is used.
How's that going to work? Anybody out there ops tested this theory yet? I'm
showing my ignorance of this one.
As for MMO, its fineto in my oil. The YAK engines ran on Benzene based fuels before
they got here so that is probably why they seemed to like it. At least mine
did that is.

I would love to hear where the corrosion property is found and what form
it takes. Any pictures would help.
The issue is much like the damage from ethanol in MOGAS being used in
aircraft engines. No one is specific on the damage just that it might
just cause some. Some use it, some avoid it, some fear it.

Subject: | Re: Chineses Gyro questions |
FWIW adding to Dennis's overview on fuel imbalance ... flying out of wings level
has a double hit, firstly as described the high wing tank feeds fuel in preference
to the low tank.
The second hit is that excess fuel from the compensation tank (yellow sphere on
firewall that feeds the pressure carb) is returned to the collector tank under
the seat, which in turn can overflow back to the wing tanks via a simple T connection
... so excess fuel (determined by pump pressure over carb consumption
/ throttle setting) will ultimately tend to flow back to the low wing tank.
So you end up feeding from the high tank & returning excess to the low one ...
quickly getting the tanks out of balance. And as quickly remedied by raising the
fuller tank wing by 5 degrees offset by opposite rudder, as per the Russian
pilot notes.
Briefly worth mentioning other less common sources of imbalance that I've come
across in wings level flight ...
If one of the vent tubes gets blocked or angled differently into the airflow (on
1989+ models) this can cause a tank pressure imbalance with fuel return favoured
to the low pressure one & fed from the higher pressure one.
[Presume the Russians changed the design to two separate tank vents to stop the
syphoning problem with the single vent in hot weather with full tanks ... fixing
one problem to potentially create another]
Similarly over-tightening the wing filler caps in time can stretch the rubber seal
leaving the tank open to the upper wing surface (low) pressure, with results
as per the vents above. If suspected this can be simply checked by swapping
the filler cap around to see if the imbalance follows it.
I've also heard that the wing tank feed non-return (flap) valves can stick over
time due to residue build up (I think), which may also contribute to tank imbalance.
Hope this helps.
brgds, Rob R

Agree and I was wrong. The active ingredient is 2-dichloro-benzene. So as
best I can tell it is the release of chloride with the combustion of benzene
that is the corrosive agent.
Incidentally, Benzene is an aromatic compound therefore the sweet smell.
Need to go back to my organic chemistry to verify that.
Any chemical engineers on the list?

MMO added to the fuel is a source of Lead to coat the valve guides on that
285. Used religiously, you can feel the difference. It runs smoother. Miss
using it once after that and you will feel it shake up your world. You'll
say to yourself I should have had MMO with that last sortie.
Add a quart to the oil one hour prior to your oil change and it will break
up some of the carbon deposits in the crank case. Be prepared to see the
filter screens coated with carbon chips when you rinse them off.
Hah, son of Blitz.Potus, you thought I was going to give the 99th way to use
MMO in ones everyday life didn't you?
