Subject: | Matronics Email List Fund Raiser During November! |
Dear Listers,
Each November I hold a PBS-like fund raiser to support the continued operation
and upgrade of the List services at Matronics. It's through soley through the
Contributions of List members that these Matronics Lists are possible.
You have probably noticed that there are no banner ads or pop-up windows on any of the Matronics Lists or related web sites such as the Forums site ( http://forums.matronics.com ), Wiki site ( http://wiki.matronics.com ), or other related pages such as the List Search Engine ( http://www.matronics.com/search ), List Browse ( http://www.matronics.com/listbrowse ), etc. This is because I believe in a List experience that is completely about the sport we all enjoy - namely Airplanes and not about annoying advertisments.
During the month of November I will be sending out List messages every few days
reminding everyone that the Fund Raiser is underway. I ask for your patience
and understanding during the Fund Raiser and throughout these regular messages.
The Fund Raiser is only financial support mechanism I have to pay all of the
bills associated with running these lists. Your personal Contribution counts.
Once again, this year I've got a terrific line up of free gifts to go along with
the various Contribution levels. Most all of these gifts have been provided
by some of the vary members and vendors that you'll find on Matronics Lists and
have been either donated or provided at substantially discounted rates.
This year, these generous people include Bob Nuckolls of the AeroElectric Connection (http://www.aeroelectric.com/), Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore (http://www.buildersbooks.com/), and Jon Croke of HomebuiltHELP (http://www.homebuilthelp.com/).
These are extremely generous guys and I encourage you to visit their respective
web sites. Each one offers a unique and very useful aviation-related product
line. I would like publicly to thank Bob, Andy, and Jon for their generous support
of the Lists again this year!!
You can make your List Contribution using any one of three secure methods this
year including using a credit card, PayPal, or by personal check. All three methods
afford you the opportunity to select one of this year's free gifts with
a qualifying Contribution amount!!
To make your Contribution, please visit the secure site below:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
I would like to thank everyone in advance for their generous financial AND moral
support over the years. I know it sounds a little cliche, but you guys really
do feel like family.
Thank you for your support!

Nice piece, Gary, but please take it off list. We're all politically
saturated as it is. More here seems inappropriate. Thanks, Blitz

Subject: | Re: Yak-List Digest: 11 Msgs - 10/31/08 |
I'm a new list member and just noticed the one-wing landing post. I'm the only
western hemisphere owner of a Yak-54. Many people know it under the name "Russian
Thunder".
It happens that I had a one wing landing of my own with an R/C model recently.
This video was the avweb video of the week, and has been shared on many other
sites, including my own: RCGroups.com and FlyingGiants.com.
I find the fake video a bit annoying because so many people have sent it to me
and so many have been suckered by it. It seems obvious to me that this is a CGI
rendering of an airplane (something I also know something about since I develop
the RealFlight flight simulator) and not a model or a real aircraft. I don't
mean to insult the people who thought the video was real, but I am simply stunned
by how many of my aviation-loving friends bought into it. To me, it seems
just as off as the CGI sequences in Pearl Harbor, The Aviator, Flyboys, and
other aviation-themed movies. The aircraft in the video simply doesn't behave
like a real airplane, whether man-carrying or model.
I can tell you from experience that bringing in an R/C model with one wing is not
something most people can hope to do. Since the event happened to me in an
R/C model, it's given me an opportunity to consider how hopeless such a situation
would be with Russian Thunder. Even with it's performance capabilities, which
are still pretty darn impressive even by 2008 standards, it could not possibly
be brought in safely without both wings solidly attached.
I'll link everyone to my own One Wing Landing video both on youtube and my blog
at RCGroups. I figure this is a good way to introduce myself and maybe you'll
find it interesting, even though it is an R/C model of a Yak, and not the real
thing:

Out of curiosity, how many read the comparison of views on General Aviation
by the two candidates in the AOPA newsletter that came out last weekend?
What we are facing with this upcoming election will have everything to do
with our flying CJ's and YAKs over the next 3 years. It is not only our
privilege to fly CJ's and YAKs freely in our US skies that will be under
attach. It's our 1st and 2nd amendment rights that are also coming under
attach but this all that I'm saying on this subject since the "list" is only
for YAK and CJ discussion. No advertising and not a disparaging word should
be spoken. That way we will not have to pull our heads out of the sand to
face the reality of what is at stake in this impending perfect political
storm that has not been seen on the international scene in 60 years. For
those interested, I'll be happy to provide information on what a
pathological narcissistic personality disorder is but as a hint names like
Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and Jim Baker (Guiana fame) all come to mind.
Go on line and read the AOPA article on the views of the two candidates then
go vote your condense on 4 Nov 08. I promise this is the last political
comment I'll make on the "list".
I empathize with Bill Geipel concerning his post and understand fully what
he was feeling in his gut when he felt compelled to post it. WE are all sick
of politics but hopefully not to the point of sticking our heads in the sand
because this election will affect the future of our flying freedom among
others.
But.what the Hey! Texas Tech just knocked off Texas! In the AM, Alabama will
be #1 in the NCAA! Roll DAMNED TIDE from a Red Neck that clings to his Bible
and Guns! This did not have anything to do with flying either but neither
does the 100 uses of MMO.
Just go vote on Tuesday.

Subject: | Want to buy a Yak-52, have some questions |
Hi guys. I'm looking into buying a Yak-52 sometime in the next year. From my research
these aircraft seem like capable aerobatic machines, and are relatively
easy and inexpensive to maintain. I think they will fit my desires perfectly.
This will be my first aircraft purchase and I'm trying to get an idea of exactly
how much these birds cost to fly. My estimates are about $110 an hour wet (at
4.90 a gallon) Does this seem correct or am I way off here?
Secondly I'm a long legged guy at 6'3" and 250lbs. Now I've flown C152's and Super
Cubs, and I can tolerate them. But I would really like an airplane that is
at least somewhat comfortable for me. I understand that at my size this is a
tall order (pun intended!) but how comfortable are these airplanes for you guys?
Anyways I think I have everything else figured out. If there is anything odd that
is specific to the Yak please bring it to my attention. Thanks.

At 6'3" and 280 - I'm not all that comfortable in a 52 (sat in, never
flown one). Very comfortable in the CJ-6.
