Sounds like a potential FOD in elevator crash. Barry also flew AN2s, famous
for his flight from Poland to Australia following the 1933 route of Aviation

Subject: | Re: Landing Gear Indicator LED's |
I have not done it, but the theory is a no-brainer really. You simply
take out the bulb holders that are presently there for your present
landing gear position indicator lights, and install the ones listed in
the link. One of the links is bad that is listed but this one:
http://www.newark.com/ is still good. Simply go to that site, and plug
in the part numbers listed in the thread and order the parts.
The general idea is that Russian light bulbs can be a pain to keep in
stock. If you pull the Russian light bulbs AND the bulb holders out,
(unsolder the wires) and then replace them with new bulb sockets and LED
replacement bulbs, they should darn near last forever and never need to
be changed.
It's a great idea. Wish I had thought of it! However, since I have
about 50 spare Russian bulbs on hand already, I will probably wait for
awhile before doing it.

I could not agree more Forrest.
Gill, possibly arguing the cost with individual buyers might not be
within the realm of what this list is for (like I should talk anyway),
but speaking for myself, I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with any
professional seller in the YAK or CJ fraternity letting people know of
the general or specific products they sell ON THIS LIST, possibly with a
reminder to contact them OFF list for prices, orders, or delivery
issues. Doug Sapp has done this and I am very very glad he has, as he
has saved me a lot of effort looking elsewhere, PLUS, I feel we should
support one of our own whenever possible. Yourself included!
Making people aware of what is out there, even if you are the one that
MADE it available in the first place, is totally different than the
definition of what a "customer communication venue" is defined as. Ok,
well... Maybe it really could be defined as a "communication venue" but
you know what? INTENT counts for something too, and I have met VERY
VERY few people on this list that did not have good intent at heart.
Certainly 100% of those currently participating.

The 52 is a smaller airplane tha the CJ6. Your airframe would be better off
in a CJ. I would advise you to look a little further at the comparrisions of
the 52 and the CJ. The CJ will do every thing the 52 will do and is a better
cross country airplane, hands down. the stock CJ with 285 HP will give you
135 kts at 13 GPH. The 52 will do max 120 kts at 17 gph. Would lile to
discuss further at your convience. I have a great CJ6 forsale.

Forrest, you are the man! I love it!
Mac, they can be kind of hard to find now-a-days, but if you can live
with a single seat aircraft, the YAK-50 is one of the best aircraft
around for big guys. I am over 6'6", and my weight is classified for
fear someone might actually plug the numbers in on a weight and balance
issue (smile). I can not fit in a 52 or a CJ-6. However, I can fit
into a stock 50 (single seat model). I have moved the seat back a few
inches... An easy mod, and that leaves me with even more comfort.
Forrest is right in that the CJ is a faster aircraft with even less fuel
burn than the 52. I can't honestly let the statement go that the CJ
will do everything that the 52 will do. The CJ will do gentleman
aerobatics with aplomb. The CJ is not built for competitive aerobatic
instruction, while the 52 is. The CJ-6 does what I call "nice"
aerobatics. The YAK-52 does RIP YOUR LIPS OFF aerobatics. That's where
the real difference lies. The CJ is a graceful swan. The 52 is a
freaking tractor.
Of course the 50 beats both of them. At 17 GPH it does around 158
knots. It's a weight thing, pure and simple.
If you combine the best of both though, you get a CJ-6 with the Russian
M-14PF engine and a three bladed MT prop. That's a very serious
airplane and I would have to say would be very hard to resist, even if
the level of aerobatics is not "perfect" per se.

Safety issue:
Aircraft: 1995 YAK-52 flown approx 700 hours TT.
Issue: During the just completed Condition Inspection (Annual) cracks were
found in both fuel tanks. Several cracks, about a half inch long, were at
the bottom of each tank at the center and right next to the spot welds which
hold the internal baffle/support. The right tank was leaking and the left
one just barely started.
Recommendation: Remove the panels under the tanks and inspect each tank for
blue fuel stains, cracks, and fuel leaks.
A good welder can repair the tanks and then cover with welds and original
spot weld areas with PRC for added protection.

Fred,
This is a common problem on pre 1989 Yak 52's. The telltale sign is the
blue stain which will show up around the fuel cavity cover plates at the
inboard rear cover primarily. The reason on pre-1989 Yak 52's is
because these aircraft have a single vent system for all three tanks;
left main, right main and header tank. 1989 and later models have a
duel vent system. Easily seen by looking on the belly of the fuselage
where 2 vent tubes vs. one can be seen. Many of these pre-89 airplanes
"puke" fuel when the tanks are over 35-40 liters and the main tanks are
heated by the sun on the wings. This expansion and contraction of the
fuel tanks stresses and flexes the very thin aluminum, thus ultimately
causing them to crack. I have seen cracks underneath the metal bands
which hold the tanks in the cavity and also directly in the middle of
the tank just below the fuel tank fill cap.

While I agree the CJ6 is a fine airplane and a better cross country
airplane and also faster than the 52, I disagree the CJ6 will do
everything a Yak 52 will do and your max speed of 120 knots and fuel
burn of 17 GPH at 120 knots are seriously exaggerated. Now I don't know
what Yak 52 you've been flying, but 120 knots in cruise is clearly not
max and 17 GPH at 120 knots is definitely not max speed. Yak 52's
cruise very comfortably at 120 -125 knots with a fuel burn of around 14
GPH as proven on a JPI FS450 fuel flow instrument.
What is the roll rate of the CJ6 Forrest? Is it greater than 140
degrees per second? What is the best short field take off distance for
a CJ6? Is it less than 500 - 600 FT? How long will you fly a CJ6
inverted, holding altitude, without doing damage to the engine.
Once again, I think the CJ6 is an outstanding airplane. It clearly has
some advantages over the Yak 52. But to imply it will do everything a
Yak 52 will do, is an overstatement.

The 52 is a smaller airplane tha the CJ6. Your airframe would be
better off
in a CJ. I would advise you to look a little further at the
comparrisions of
the 52 and the CJ. The CJ will do every thing the 52 will do and is a
better
cross country airplane, hands down. the stock CJ with 285 HP will give
you
135 kts at 13 GPH. The 52 will do max 120 kts at 17 gph. Would lile
to
discuss further at your convience. I have a great CJ6 forsale.

Or you can replace the metal tanks with our Yak 52 fuel bladders giving
you 48 gallons fuel (24 per side). Another 60+ minutes of fuel makes
the 52 a true 2.5 hour with 30 minutes reserve airplane. Contact me off
list if you're interested in the fuel bladders.

Safety issue:
Aircraft: 1995 YAK-52 flown approx 700 hours TT.
Issue: During the just completed Condition Inspection (Annual) cracks
were
found in both fuel tanks. Several cracks, about a half inch long,
were at
the bottom of each tank at the center and right next to the spot welds
which
hold the internal baffle/support. The right tank was leaking and the
left
one just barely started.
Recommendation: Remove the panels under the tanks and inspect each
tank for
blue fuel stains, cracks, and fuel leaks.
A good welder can repair the tanks and then cover with welds and
original
spot weld areas with PRC for added protection.

Subject: | Barry Hempel dies in Yak 52 Crash |
This is tragic indeed, but the second article is simply frightening. It is
clear that Barry was a very experienced pilot, but when something goes
wrong, each and every argument will be looked for in order to blame the
pilot. In Europe we must not fly with paying passengers in a Yak 52 either
because the Yak 52 is not type certified and therefore may never be used for
"air work". In practice we do fly with passengers, but they never pay for it
of course. And even then, it is risky.

Sounds like a potential FOD in elevator crash. Barry also flew AN2s, famous
for his flight from Poland to Australia following the 1933 route of Aviation
pioneer Bert Hinkler
