Fuel filter needs a good clean..

Subject: Yak-List: Fuel pressure gauge drops after TO in Yak 55m
Hi,
I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this issue before and
can provide some details. During taxi and run-up, all gauges look good. My
fuel pressure guage (a Mitchell gauge) reads that the fuel pressure is in
the green (above 5 PSI) . After TO and during climb, the pressure drops to
the bottom of the green arc (2.5 PSI). The engine seems to behave normally
at all ranges (full power and cruise). During descent to land and after
landing the fuel pressure seems to rise to the normal ranges again(~5 PSI).
My mechanic and I agree that it seems like the fuel pump may be the cause
for the issue and a new one is the best course of action. I just wanted to
see if anyone else has had this experience efore and can explaint it a
little more than just a potentally faulty fuel pump.
Thanks,
Anthony.

Thanks for the reply Nigel - one question though, if it was a dirty fuel
filter wouldn't the fuel pressure show a low value during run-up as well?

Craig,
Up here in Maryland, my airport, KESN, has about the cheapest 100LL around at $4.50/gal.
It was just under $6.00 this summer. Consequently, I've flown my Yak
about 50 hours this year and did not go to either Sun & Fun or OSH...just could
not afford the gas...cost over $400 to top off the tanks ONE time! Thank
goodness for the airshows I did where I left with free full tanks!
I had a conversation with the airport manager the other day that really concerned
me. He said he is having a hard time finding 100LL to buy for the airport.
That's why the price is so high up here -- 100LL is no longer locally available
and must trucked here from far away.
I hope they start making 100LL's replacement soon!

According to Mr. Bernoulli, if the effective cross-sectional area of your filter
has been reduced due to a clog etc - and not allowing unrestricted flow of the
fuel - the pressure loss across the filter will roughly be a function of the
square of the flow rate.
So, when the fuel flow rate is highest - during take-off and climb - you will see
a much greater (or just plain noticeable) drop in fuel pressure as opposed
to when the flow rate is low (taxi, descent). During run-up the engine is not
under the same load as it is during the climb, and thus the fuel flow rate will
be lower.

Check your vent system. At low power settings a clogged vent will not be
as apparent as higher settings.

This reminds me of the first time I did a condition inspection on my Yak. I
took out the fine fuel filter and it looked fine, very clean in fact. Then I
tried to blow through it and could not hardly blow through it. I put it in
my ultrasonic cleaner in some mineral spirits and a bunch of very fine
debris came out of the filter. After, I could easily blow through it.
Something to think about.

I have sold a bunch of the blank panels, but to tell you the truth I really
don't know what they used to lay them out or cut them. I plan to install
twin Dynon's in my CJ6, so if you do get it in a CAD file I would sure like
a copy.

Yeah, yeah, you guys all have cheap gas. Must be nice!
But, you don't get to live here in the People's Republic of Maryland. This is
a state that, and I kid you not, charges sales tax on the air you get pumped into
your SCUBA tank. Yes, they tax the air!

Looks like $2.99 (Self Service) at Suffolk Virginia might be a record!
They also sell Mo-Gas right next to the 100LL pump. Can't remember the
price, but it's cheap. One guy here in New Bern flew a Cessna 180 and
182 up there that had long range tanks, filled both, then filled the
passenger space with large poly fuel tanks. It was actually cheaper to
fly to Virginia to get this fuel and then lug it back than it was to
purchase it locally. I've never been able to understand how 100LL can
vary in price by as much as $2/gallon within a 150 mile ellipse. Maybe
some expert can explain it some day.
By the bye, Suffolk is a nice place to visit. Lots of heavy iron
warbirds including one WHOLE LARGE HANGER full of Russian designed
fighter aircraft! You need to walk around and ask... They'll let you
in, and you can just walk around and look without supervision. They fly
the American made stuff on the weekends typically. So far, none of the
Russian stuff has been restored, but a lot of it is in amazingly good
condition.

I brought one of Doug's blank panels. I did my own CAD drawings, saved to
disk, then took the disk and blank panel to local machine shop with a CNC
milling machine, and wooo-la, 1 hour later (actual time on machine) my panel was
done. It took the operator 4 hours to program the miller and about 1/2 hour
to set up the miller. It took me a couple of days of drawing, double
checking clearances, sizes, etc. Remember "garbage in - garbage out of the milling
machine."
The nice thing about it is, it comes out perfectly done. (That is if the
input is correct.) I cut my panel to fit a Blue Mountain box and moved a number
instruments around. For instants, I used a 2.25" manifold gage, did away
with the RPM gage (went to a digital with the M14P) and moved my altimeter and
ASI, in line with the T/B. The T/B I've since replaced with an AP head.
That is the nice thing about doing a CAD drawing than CNC milling. It does
save some time but save more muscle, cut fingers, and calluses.
I don't know a thing about working with a water jet cutter. How small a
hole can they cut and how "finished" are the edges?
I did this some time ago. Some where in my pile of disks I may have the
files for standard cuts outs (3.25"- 2.25") and different hole sizes. These
were done in Autocad Light. If I remember the guy a epanel had the CJ panel
shape but not the mounting holes locations. That could have changed.

good question about CNC vs flo-jet but they both seem to be pretty precise...at
least on American Chopper!
Found a guy who will do the CAD layout with one of Doug's blanks for 125 and cut
it for 140. I thought that was pretty damn good

Nov. 10th marked the 233rd anniversary of the Founding of the United
States Marine Corps.
Nov. 11th Veterans Day, or what used to be called Armistice Day (or
Remembrance Day in other parts of the world) being the anniversary of
the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.
None of which is appropriate for the YAK-LIST.
All of which is appropriate for any American (and many others)to show
respect for.
Each of us honor the fallen in our own ways and thank the rest who have
served. The Marines have always held a special place in their hearts
for Eleanor Roosevelt, which she earned and still deserves.
Since I am sure you will agree Bill, let's end it like that.

Anyone try to put a spin on filter (air wolf or otherwise) on a Yak 52?
If so, where did you mount it?

I beat that one to death a year ago. Look back at the pictures I posted and you
can see my instillation or I can email you the specs. I have a Airwolf but you
only need to buy the mounting from one of the CJ guys and then use my install.
I will save you a lot of money because Airwolf will sell you a bunch of stuff
you don't and can't use. I did send them the install package I did but they
never posted it anywhere that I can see.

At the AOPA convention I found that Champion now makes a spark plug for
the M14P engine. It is an Iridium Fine Wire Plug Part Number RVL38S 14
MM with the barrel using a metric thread, drops right into the M14P or
CJ engine. Not cheap but should last the life of the engine.

Save your money and do a auto plug conversion. On the M-14 it's the wires that
are no good in most cases not the plugs. Then you can use $2 plugs and throw
them away. Your engine will run better also.
