Made it home in one piece. Not the best plane for night flying, IFR training really
kicked in a couple of times. Now its time for some fun. :D

On my trip I had a gear up bulb not come on (nose wheel) Tried changing bulbs..no
change. Flew by a tower and confirmed it wasn't hanging down. So, now I need
to know where the relay switch is for the up indication and how to test it on
the ground, thanks. Just one of a bizillion questions that arouse on this cross

Subject: | Re: No gear up indicator |
The microswitches for the gear lights are on the drag link (DOWN light)
and the uplock (parrot hook) assembly (UP light). The problem may not
be the UP microswitch on the uplock assembly. It could be the lever
mechanism itself binding internally within the uplock assembly. There
is an arm that engages and disengages the microswitch. When the nose
gear (or the mains for that matter) is up and locked into the parrot
hook, the arm on the assembly that engages and disengages the
microswitch will be disengaged from the microswitch. Sometimes the
assembly mechanism has not been properly serviced over the years and the
arm mechanism hangs up and will not disengage the microswitch. If the
airplane has ever been landed gear up, the uplock assembly mechanism can
be bent slightly causing the parrot hook mechanical lock mechanism not
to lock and thus not allow the arm to disengage from the microswitch.
Push up on the parrot hook and lock it in place. To release the parrot
hook, note the spring in front of the hook and push up on the lever on
the end of the spring opposite the parrot hook. If it doesn't lock in
place when you push up on the parrot hook, the mechanism is not working
correctly. If it does lock in place, watch the arm that engages the
microswitch and see if it disengages the microswitch. These
microswitches have a very distinctive "click" when then engage and
disengage. If the arm moves away from the microswitch, then push the
button on the microswitch to hear the "click" in both directions. While
doing this, have someone in the cockpit turn the BATTERY switch on and
the GEAR light toggle switch on the left side console. See if the nose
gear light goes on and off when depressing and releasing the microswitch
manually. If it doesn't go on and off, it is possible the microswitch
could be bad. But I would use an ohm meter and check the continuity
before replacing the switch. Especially if you here the distinctive
"click". It could also be a bad bulb socket/wiring on the instrument
panel.
Many times these socket rotate when the lense is removed. If rotated
too many times or too far in one direction, the brittle Russian wires
can break off at the back of the socket. Bingo....no light at all.
Hopefully this will help you diagnose the problem.

Hi, Guys!
What's the availability of CJ wings? I'm looking at a project that needs
one. Is it a center section w/ outer panels?
Thanks so much, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Gang,
We are gaining a fair amount of experience with these items as all our
projects have glass something or other in them.
First with regards to the magnatometer. in the CJ we mount it where the
remote gyro compass mounted. In most CJs you actually have a choice,
either in the tail or in the wing. Both will work well depending on the
manufacturers instructions. Remember you have to shim the unit to get it
exactly level, but with the structure already built into the airplane that
has been plumbed, a lot of the work is already done for you.
OAT probes. Actually a slick place to mount it is in the rear of the nose
gear well. It works very well there, doesn't get dirty, is out of the
exhaust path, and is out of sight.
As an aside, I'm thinking of redoing the front panel in my airplane and
making it one piece. The stock configuration is a challenge to put the
EFIS stuff in and lay it out nicely. With the new Garmin 696 out you can
now have a high quality full glass panel for right about $10K.
Amazing....
Regards,
Barry

Rico,
While I am sure it is possible to change out the center section I would not
think it would be possible without a complete fuselage jig to aid in proper
reasembly. If your project has the center section stub wing pushed aft, I'd
say it was not econonically repairable. You could most likley replace the
entire fuselage for 15 to 17K, then move all your stuff over into the
replacement fuselage.
Good used wing panels are around 7K now, some cheaper are around. Be
carefull about corrosion, hidden damage and old modifications done in
China. Some have been found to have holes hacked in the main spars.
Inspect them by removing both the tip and the tank to get a good look at the
structure.
Hope this helps.

Doug

Doug,
Thanks for the advice. The project I'm looking at actually taxi'ed into
some trees. The fuse looks good, but the wing is pretty much toast as far
as I am able to tell from the pix. Are you saying that damage to the
center section most likely distorted the fuse to the point of being
undesirable? Or are you saying the center section would be better off
replaced?
Thanks so much!!
Rico

The stub wing is a total side to side assembly it would be nearly impossible
to change out without factory jigs. If its distorted the fuse is pretty
much toast. Look for wrinkling or deformation of the top or bottom skins
between the wing attach points. Also look carefully at the area of the tail
cone just under the horizontal stab. If there is a diagonal wrinkle in this
area it means that the tail group is now out of line. This happened when
one wings takes a big hit and the fuse snaps sideways. All this and more
happened when I had a engine out and ended up picking apples with a CJ6.
