Hi Keith--
Yup. Both. Snowing here. All snug in the hangar. Turn on the heat (if
you've got it) and service the strut(s). Shouldn't get any squat to speak
of with brakes. Make sure the nose strut is up, too, or taxiing will be a
chore.

Thoughts?
Started up the CJ today in some fairly chilly weather and a very cold
previous
Night. When I applied the brake the aircraft dipped noticeably to the right.
Strut
Was bottoming out.
Not sure if the strut needs servicing or cold weather is the culprit or both

Hi Jerry,
Thanks! No heat, maybe a bullet heater will do the trick.
I think my nose strut may actually be over serviced as it over extends on occasion
while taxing and I hear the clunk??
Without digging into the misc pdf I have is the servicing nitrogen or both?
Thanks,
Keith

Cold weather reduced internal pressure. you need to service struts ehen
there is a large temp. differential.

Subject: | Oil filter add on |
Hello all,
Sorry if this has been a past subject but I'm new.
My CJ came to me with an oil filter setup. First thing I noticed was that it did
not have an aviation oil filter but I really did not give it much more thought
and the installation looked well done.
I probably have 50 or so hours on the aircraft since purchase at the end of last
July. Engine and aircraft have run flawlessly.
Fast forward to yeterday. It was very cold in Massachusetts Friday night (15F).
When I got to my hangar it was actually not that bad inside. Maybe because some
of my neighbors have heat and I get a little residual help. In any case, I
turned on the EZheat heaters I have on the oil tank and sump. Two hours later,
I was strapped in ready to fly. Oil temp was indicating 10C before start. Engine
started fine. and when I applied the brakes the aircraft dipped to the right
(see previous "mushy strut" post). Anyway this caused my nose wheel to swivel
right. Had the kid unstrap and go out and check things out. rolled forward
a little bit at about (1000 rpm) and the aircraft was still heading to the right
so I pushed the power up to get her headed back on the yellow line and my son
gave me the shutdown signal.
Unstrapped to find the entire right side of the fuselage and top of the wing pretty
much soaked in oil. I thought the worst but then noticed the oil filter dangling
on its safety wire.
I'm guessing that the slug of goo in the oil cooler was headed to the filter about
the time I shoved the power up and bam! Blew the filter up like a balloon
but it did not burst. The threaded fitting on the filter housing sheared clean
off.
All in all I might have lost 2 liters of oil and had a helluva a mess.
I'm sure a different scenario might have had bad consequences so I'm grateful
the housing didn't wait 15 or 20 minutes to break apart. Looking at the filter
housing after removing it I see it has a tiny bypass valve which might work on
a small engine or hyd pump, not a Housai.
So now I'm trying to decide whether to even put a filter assembly back on. If I
do, you better believe it'll be made for an aircraft engine. Also, already ordered
the heater for the oil cooler.

Use nitrogen. Service to the cold temp. Then re-service in the spring( will
have to relieve pressure).

Does anyone have the vector art for the canopy rescue arrows - or
the vynal?
Also, the ICAO fuel placards would be nice.
Off list if able, thanks!

Keith;
Two items for your consideration;
1. Mushy strut - If you hear that clunk the strut pressure is too low.
Unlike western aircraft the CJ oleos are designed to be fully extended at
rest. Oleo pressure should be maintained at 20 ATM (290 psi) Nose and 48
ATM (700 psi) Main.
Even at this pressure the aircraft may "waddle" during cold weather taxi.
Service with nitrogen but if you have any indication of fluid loss you will
need to take care of that first.
If you do not already have it you should get the Specifications &
Maintenance manual from Doug Sapp.
2. Oil filters - The Huosai like all radials (or any Dry Sump engine)
utilizes a scavenge pump to return drain oil to the tank. The scavenge pump
does not incorporate a pressure relief valve and in certain conditions (like
the one you have described) the filter could have experienced 300 psi or
more.
A few years back a friend purchased a CJ from a warm location in the US (
I'm in western Canada) that had a NAPA oil filter installation. At the first
inspection I found the filter element severely deformed though still intact.
I compared the element and unit construction to a standard
Champion aircraft oil filter and found a world of difference. The paper
element was less than half the thickness and the unit construction was not
even close.
I removed the entire system.
Cheers;
Walt

Hi Walt,
Now you tell me!! Actually it was the best thing that could have happened.
Hey thanks for the info on the the struts. I think the clunk comes when the planes
rocks back on the tail during taxing over extending the strut, but I could
be wrong. You are right about the manuals. I have a hodgepodge of translated
stuff on pdf files. Perhaps Doug has a nice document in English.
