You will have to accept my 2 RMB worth as I'm still in China. (6.7 RMB to the dollar today, we are getting killed here!) The nose gear noise (while taxiing) can range from snapping to clanking to outright banging depending on the condition and adjustment of your nose gear. You are correct, it can come from the nose gear oleo extending and hitting the stops, but I would think that if this is a constant situation you might check the pressure as this is really not normal if the pressure is correct, unless the taxiway is real rough. However, if the length of the actuator ram is incorrect it can cause the nose gear to actually pop in and out of "over center" causing a snapping/clunking noise, and a dangerous condition should you run up against something solid enough to fold up the nose gear. This rarely happens when taxiing on a hard surface, but nose gears have been known to fold when pushing the aircraft up a incline backwards with a tug, which seems to indicate that pressure aft can cause the nose gear to fold. Check your manual for proper over center specs. and adjustment procedures. Also if the bearing in the upper end lug of the nose gear actuator is loose, this can cause a noise also. We have found many of these end lugs which were so soft that the hole for the bearing had stretched to a egg shape allowing the bearing to slop up and down every time the nose gear rolled over a seam in the taxi way. We have a 4140 steel end lug to solve this problem. Last, there are two large bronze bushings in the top of the nose gear, if these are badly worn they will cause both difficulty in steering and a clunking noise when taxiing. Best from Nanchang, They are playing Jingle Bells in the lobby of the hotel, photo's of Chinese Santa's all over the place......very strange, Buddhists celebrating Christmas, how does that work? Well, actually Lakeland. First had to sweep off 8 inches of sunshine off the hanger pad and then taxi out. Check list complete, call tower, canopy full back in 82 degree sunshine, sunglasses set and away. Paid for this though, cost a whopping $2.75/gallon of 100LL. Back at the ranch, took my live-in GIB for fresh strawberry and shortcake... and jeez, now it's Happy Hour already. Hmmm, maybe this is why I retired to Florida. Craig Payne cpayne@joimail.com

Craig, 12 degrees and snowing up here in the Chicago area. Supposed to get 2 to 6 inches tonight. Can't wait to fire up the snowblower later tonight. Don't you miss that?? Be down there next month!! Lets see... Woke up Sunday morning to 51 degree weather. By 10:00am it was down to 24. By 5:00 it was down to 11. Yesterday our high was 3 degrees above zero with a windchill of -20. Today we got up to a whopping 10 above with 4 inches of snow falling since 8:00am. Only in Iowa! Plans are to move to Florida when I retire! If it keeps this up maybe sooner!
