Hi all, The alloy arm that the elevator counterbalance weights attach to on my 18T is corroded beyond repair. Does anyone know where I can either buy a good used one or have one machined. By 10:00am it was down to 24. By 5:00 it was down to 11. Yesterday our high was 3 degrees above zero with a windchill of -20. Today we got up to a whopping 10 above with 4 inches of snow falling since 8:00am. Only in Iowa! Plans are to move to Florida when I retire! If it keeps this up maybe sooner! Yeah, 3 inches of rain and snow down to 2500' here in SoCal. AND I have to fly an L-39 with 4 F/A-18's again this Friday in a fly over supporting Snowball Express (www.snowballexpress.org). Sometimes this job is extremely difficult. ;) In all seriousness, this is a great charity and I'm so honored to be able to in a small way show appreciation for these families that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I happened to be in the terminal at the Orange County airport yesterday as one of the 5 Snowball Express flights arrived. American Airlines donates these aircraft to fly all over the country picking up families to attend this yearly event that supports over 2000 families of the fallen. As I sat there and watched a young mother of 4 young children, the oldest one about 6 and the youngest an infant, come out of the jet way and greeted by cheering volunteers, I could not help but shed a few tears. 4 kids without a dad who was killed in the name of our freedom. In this season of giving as we celebrate the birth of the He who is the ultimate example of charity, I invite you to visit www.snowballexpress.org and consider making a donation. I can think of no greater cause than supporting those families who have supported us with the ultimate sacrifice. A warm Merry Christmas to you all. Hi, contemplating the DYNON ems for Christmas. (this will be an eventually and additional instrument to their new EFIS) Has anyone installed DYNON into their Chang/YAK? If so, which sensors can we use, which ones can we not use. Has anyone installed another EMS that worked well? Craig, You do this to us every year about this time -- talk about shoveling off sunshine and and how it just sucks to have to use so much sunscreen while keeping your sunglasses on and clean with your canopy back in the perfect 82 degree weather....... Later, when the wind with the strange names like "BashemdownJoe" or "FloodemoutPatty" come to town and you are wondering where your hangar is today or how many cottonmouths or alligators have found refuge from the flood waters in your GIB's seat, I don't want to hear a whisper about it. I only want to hear positive comments. Something like, "It truly is amazing how quickly the sheets dry down here when they are hung out in the 120 knot breeze!" or "I find that my joints are so much more flexible here in the summer when the AC is off." Enjoy the respite Lad - the weather Gremlins are coming up on your six. Batman

I too recall craig does this every year - Hal, thanks for the reminder us frozen midwesterners can shovel the snow - I used to live in Louisiana where those named storms hit and I guarantee you can't shovel water. And as for California ... I don't really like it when the earth moves either. Think I'll go turn the heat on in the hanger and clean up the oil on the floor !! I relish to thought of the wind in my hair and kicking gators and cottonmouths off my ramp. It just plain invigorating to live life on the edge - so to speak. You sort of feel like a old sea captain on the bridge of his brig, sail set, reefed but square, close hauled to wind. What's really nice, is all those liberal Yankees that buy houses on the shore, takeoff like swamp rabbits from a ripple in the water. (BTW the difference between a "Damn Yankee" and just plain "Yankee" is the damn Yankee stay.) Now those AZ lads have a little too much sunshine. Poor devils, the heat kills the power of those supped up M-14s and they still run in those hills. Something about the heat to brain cell ratio, I think. No guys its best down here in Florida year round. God didn't put hair all over our bodies because he wanted us to be civilized. Not to huddle next to fires wearing furs skins screaming about the pain in our old bones. Best be aviating though blue skies with the canopy back after just being treated to lunch at the airport dinner (which just finished happening :45 ago.) Naaaaa, You'll never convince me otherwise. Mike, A full set of jacks consist of 4 jacks. A "headed" jack which goes under the engine, 2 "stub wing" jacks and a tail support jack. Normal price for a full set of 4 stock Chinese jacks is about $1K, bought seperatly about 250 to 300 each. All have rollers on them so they move easily in the shop. They are screw type, not hyd, so they have no leak down problems if left overnight. All have the proper fittings, off set to clear the gear doors on the stub wing jacks, cly support fittings on the engine jack, and a skid fitting on the tail support jack. Making your own is possible but if you use hyd jacks and feel that you will ever have to leave the aircraft on jacks for a long period of time you should make safety locks to prevent any leaking down as sometimes happens with hyd jacks. Jacking the aircraft without proper support can be very expensive. I have seen one aircraft laying on the shop floor with the jacks sticking up through the wings-- so it can happen. A tail weight or tie dwn ring in the floor can be used instead of the engine and tail jacks, but is it not as secure as having all four jacks under the aircraft especially when it comes time to get up into the cockpit to operate the gear lever. Rather the strain placed on the tail cone while using a weight or tie down is good or bad I really have no idea. Hope all this helps. Mike, Not back yet, stuck in Beijing until the 20th. Cly studs are on order, but 60 days out at the min. Look in the parts books and you can see the jacks or wait till I get back and I'll send you some photos. Gotta run to a meeting, more later. doug On Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 8:59 PM, N642K <mdecanio@mac.com> wrote: > > Thanks Doug and welcome back!
