AND I have to fly an L-39 with 4 F/A-18's again this Friday in a fly over supporting Snowball Express (www.snowballexpress.org). Sometimes this job is extremely difficult. ;) In all seriousness, this is a great charity and I'm so honored to be able to in a small way show appreciation for these families that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I happened to be in the terminal at the Orange County airport yesterday as one of the 5 Snowball Express flights arrived. American Airlines donates these aircraft to fly all over the country picking up families to attend this yearly event that supports over 2000 families of the fallen. As I sat there and watched a young mother of 4 young children, the oldest one about 6 and the youngest an infant, come out of the jet way and greeted by cheering volunteers, I could not help but shed a few tears. 4 kids without a dad who was killed in the name of our freedom. I think it's wort h it. Mike, A full set of jacks consist of 4 jacks. A "headed" jack which goes under the engine, 2 "stub wing" jacks and a tail support jack. Normal price for a full set of 4 stock Chinese jacks is about $1K, bought seperatly about 250 to 300 each. All have rollers on them so they move easily in the shop. They are screw type, not hyd, so they have no leak down problems if left overnight. All have the proper fittings, off set to clear the gear doors on the stub wing jacks, cly support fittings on the engine jack, and a skid fitting on the tail support jack. Making your own is possible but if you use hyd jacks and feel that you will ever have to leave the aircraft on jacks for a long period of time you should make safety locks to prevent any leaking down as sometimes happens with hyd jacks. Jacking the aircraft without proper support can be very expensive. I have seen one aircraft laying on the shop floor with the jacks sticking up through the wings-- so it can happen. A tail weight or tie dwn ring in the floor can be used instead of the engine and tail jacks, but is it not as secure as having all four jacks under the aircraft especially when it comes time to get up into the cockpit to operate the gear lever. Rather the strain placed on the tail cone while using a weight or tie down is good or bad I really have no idea. Hope all this helps.
